A Chinese fishing vessel, Yuan Yu 708, rescued five Sierra Leonean fishermen on August 4, 2026, after their boat sank amid heavy rain and rough seas.
The rescue operation has been praised as a demonstration of professionalism, humanitarian service and the social responsibility of Chinese fishing enterprises operating in Sierra Leone.
Captain Wang Pingchao reportedly spotted distress signals from the local fishing boat while conducting a routine watch at sea. Recognizing the danger, he immediately suspended fishing operations and directed the vessel to travel at full speed towards the distressed boat.
By the time Yuan Yu 708 arrived at the scene, the local fishing boat had completely sunk, leaving the five fishermen struggling in the water without adequate lifesaving equipment. They faced serious risks of drowning and hypothermia as the difficult weather conditions continued.
The Chinese vessel immediately activated its emergency rescue procedures and informed its company’s Management about the incident. The crew deployed lifesaving equipment and successfully pulled all five fishermen from the water.
Company Management also coordinated additional assistance by dispatching another vessel, Chang Rong-3, with medical personnel aboard.
Following their rescue, the fishermen were provided with dry clothing, food, drinking water, basic medical care and emotional support. All five were brought to safety.
The vessel later submitted the necessary reports to Sierra Leone’s maritime and fisheries authorities. Representatives of the Sierra Leone Navy and local media subsequently visited the vessel and commended the captain and crew for their swift response and professionalism.
The successful operation underscores the importance of maritime vigilance and emergency preparedness, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and dangerous sea conditions.
It also reflects the humanitarian role that fishing companies and other maritime operators can play in protecting lives at sea.
The rescue has been described as another example of the longstanding friendship and cooperation between China and Sierra Leone.
