The formal ceremony, held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the European Union headquarters in Brussels, marked a significant milestone in strengthening diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and the European bloc. During the occasion, Ambassador Philip Bob Jusu presented his credentials to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council, António Costa.

The ceremony followed established diplomatic protocol, with Ambassador Philip Bob Jusu first presenting letters of recall for his predecessor before submitting his own letters of credence. The engagements underscored the formal recognition of his role as Sierra Leone’s representative to the European Union and signaled the beginning of his official mandate.

Accompanying the Ambassador were Deputy Ambassador Asmaa James and Head of Chancery Jonathan Las-Lamin, both of whom were present throughout the solemn proceedings.

Speaking after the ceremony, Deputy Ambassador Asmaa James congratulated Ambassador Philip Bob Jusu on the successful presentation of his credentials, describing the moment as both historic and inspiring. She noted that it was an honour to witness the occasion, emphasizing that the milestone represents a renewed commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership between Sierra Leone and the European Union.

Over the years, the European Union has remained a key development partner to Sierra Leone, contributing significantly to national efforts aimed at enhancing governance, promoting inclusive economic growth and building resilience across critical sectors. The accreditation of Ambassador Philip Bob Jusu is therefore expected to further deepen cooperation and expand opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

The presentation of letters of credence not only formalizes diplomatic representation but also opens a new chapter in Sierra Leone’s engagement with European institutions. With Ambassador Philip Bob Jusu now officially in office, attention is expected to turn toward advancing strategic partnerships, fostering dialogue and reinforcing shared commitments to development and stability.

The ceremony in Brussels stands as a proud moment for Sierra Leone’s diplomatic service, reflecting the country’s continued efforts to strengthen international relations and promote its interests on the global stage.
