NP (SL) Strengthens Fuel Quality Assurance Through Routine Tank Cleaning and Inspection

NP (SL) Limited has undertaken a routine tank cleaning and inspection exercise at its petroleum storage terminal as part of its continued commitment to maintaining fuel quality, strengthening operational safety and ensuring compliance with national regulatory requirements and international management standards.

The exercise forms part of the company’s preventive maintenance programme designed to preserve the quality of petroleum products, assess the condition of storage facilities and maintain the reliability of its operations.

Regular cleaning of petroleum storage tanks is an important aspect of fuel quality management, particularly because sludge, water residue and other sediments can accumulate at the bottom of storage tanks over time. Such deposits, if not properly managed, could affect product quality and the efficiency of storage operations.

Through the cleaning exercise, NP (SL) Limited seeks to remove accumulated sediments, maintain a clean storage environment and ensure that petroleum products are preserved under appropriate conditions before distribution to customers.

Beyond maintaining product quality, the exercise provides an opportunity for technical personnel to conduct physical examinations of storage tanks and assess their structural condition.

Once a tank has been emptied and cleaned, its internal surfaces and relevant components can be examined for signs of corrosion, damage, rupture or other defects that could compromise its integrity and continued suitability for service.

The company explained that those assessments are essential to identifying potential problems early and determining whether repairs, maintenance or additional interventions are required to maintain safe operations.

Apart from routine cleaning, NP (SL) Limited conducts annual inspections of its petroleum storage tanks as part of its broader facility management and preventive maintenance programme.

The inspections are intended to strengthen operational efficiency, minimize potential risks and ensure that storage infrastructure remains in suitable condition for the safe handling of petroleum products.

Commenting on the exercise, the Chief Executive Officer of NP (SL) Limited, Ing. Dr. Mohamed S. Kanu, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining petroleum product quality throughout the supply and distribution chain.

Ing. Dr. Mohamed S. Kanu emphasized that the company’s responsibility extends beyond importing high-quality petroleum products to ensuring that their quality and integrity are preserved during storage, transportation and delivery to customers.

“At NP SL, we are committed to ensuring that every customer receives fuel that meets the highest standards of quality and reliability,” Ing. Dr. Mohamed S. Kanu stated.

He underscored the importance of maintaining effective operational procedures and quality assurance measures to safeguard petroleum products and sustain customer confidence in the company’s services.

The tank cleaning and inspection exercise also reflects NP (SL) Limited’s commitment to internationally recognized management standards.

The company holds ISO 9001:2015 certification for Quality Management, which provides a framework for maintaining consistent product and service quality while promoting continuous operational improvement.

Its activities are also supported by ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management, reinforcing the company’s focus on environmental responsibility and workplace safety.

In addition to its internal management systems, NP (SL) Limited conducts its maintenance activities in accordance with applicable national regulatory requirements and established operational procedures.

These include requirements associated with the Environmental Protection Agency of Sierra Leone (EPA-SL), the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA), the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau and the Factory Inspectorate.

The company maintains that compliance with these regulatory frameworks, together with its internal procedures and ISO management systems, provides an important foundation for the proper inspection, maintenance and management of petroleum storage infrastructure.

Through regular tank cleaning, technical inspections and preventive maintenance, NP (SL) Limited continues to strengthen its operational controls while taking measures to protect petroleum product quality and maintain the integrity of its storage facilities.

The initiative further demonstrates the company’s commitment to safe and reliable petroleum storage operations, environmental compliance and the consistent delivery of quality fuel to customers across Sierra Leone.
