The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone, has facilitated the voluntary return of 198 Sierra Leonean migrants from Niger under the European Union-funded Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa (MPRRSA).
The returning group comprised 121 females and 77 males, including 99 adults, 80 children and 19 infants. Their return forms part of ongoing efforts by IOM and the Government of Sierra Leone to provide safe, dignified and voluntary return assistance to vulnerable migrants while promoting their sustainable reintegration into their communities.
The initiative, supported through the European Union’s Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Programme, seeks to protect the rights and well-being of migrants stranded along migration routes by offering voluntary return opportunities, humanitarian assistance and reintegration support.
The International Organization for Migration reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Government of Sierra Leone and other partners to ensure that returning migrants receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives and successfully reintegrate into society. The programme also aims to reduce the risks associated with irregular migration by creating pathways for safe return and long-term reintegration.
The latest repatriation underscores the continued collaboration between IOM, the Government of Sierra Leone and the European Union in addressing migration challenges while ensuring that Sierra Leonean nationals stranded abroad are able to return home safely and with dignity.
