MBSSE Develops Revolutionary AI Platform to Transform Education Management

Sierra Leone has emerged as a leading example of innovation in Africa’s education sector following the successful completion of EDITH (Education Digital Information Tool Helper), an artificial intelligence-powered system developed by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) to improve efficiency and decision-making within the Ministry.

The achievement follows Sierra Leone’s selection in the highly competitive EdTech Hub Ministerial AI Challenge in 2024, where the country competed against more than 30 applicants from 16 countries seeking to demonstrate how artificial intelligence could be used to strengthen education systems.

In August 2024, MBSSE submitted an ambitious proposal to address practical challenges faced by Ministry officials in managing and accessing education-related information. The proposal impressed evaluators and secured Sierra Leone a place among only six countries selected globally to participate in the initiative.

As part of the award, the Ministry received a £50,000 expert support package from the AI Observatory and Action Lab at EdTech Hub, funded by UK International Development. The support was intended to help participating countries develop innovative AI solutions capable of delivering measurable improvements within Government institutions.

Officials involved in the project said the success of Sierra Leone’s application demonstrated that innovation is driven not only by technical expertise but also by the willingness to solve real-world problems.

“We don’t need to be an AI expert to win an AI challenge. We need a real problem and the courage to solve it,” the project team stated.

By March 2026, the vision had become a reality. EDITH was successfully developed as a purpose-built artificial intelligence system designed to support Ministry officials working across the country. The tool significantly reduces the time required to complete administrative and information-management tasks, compressing activities that previously took days or even weeks into a matter of minutes.

The system is now undergoing preparations for formal handover to the Ministry’s Information Technology Department, marking the transition from a pilot project to a permanent institutional resource.

The development of EDITH was led by a dedicated multidisciplinary team. Ophaniel Gooding, Head of the Ministry’s Delivery Unit, played a key leadership role throughout the project. Sierra Leonean AI specialist Mohamed Alpha transformed the Ministry’s vision into a functioning digital platform through software development and technical implementation.

The team also benefited from the expertise of innovation coach Bryony Nicholson, who guided the design and development process, while Madleen Frazer, Country Lead and Education Specialist, ensured that the system remained firmly grounded in the realities and needs of Sierra Leone’s education sector.

Beyond the technology itself, project leaders highlighted the significant cultural and institutional changes generated through the initiative. Ministry officials who initially approached artificial intelligence with caution and uncertainty reportedly became enthusiastic advocates after witnessing the system’s capabilities during presentations and installations.

That shift from skepticism to confidence is regarded as one of the project’s most important achievements, demonstrating how practical exposure to emerging technologies can build trust and encourage innovation within public institutions.

Education stakeholders say the completion of EDITH sends a powerful message about Africa’s growing capacity to develop home-grown technological solutions to address local challenges. They argue that the project demonstrates that innovation is not limited to large economies or heavily resourced institutions.

For Sierra Leone, EDITH represents more than a technological achievement. It serves as evidence that African Governments can compete successfully on the global stage of education innovation and develop solutions capable of transforming public service delivery.

Preparations are now underway for the institutional rollout of EDITH, a project that demonstrates the power of vision, determination and collaboration in solving real-world challenges. Its successful development has positioned Sierra Leone among a growing group of countries harnessing artificial intelligence to transform public service delivery, while proving that innovation in Africa is not defined by size or resources alone. The EDITH journey shows that with bold leadership, a clear purpose and a commitment to change, even the most ambitious ideas can be transformed into practical solutions that improve lives and shape the future of education.
