Africell, one of the country’s leading mobile network operators, has officially launched an exhilarating 3-on-3 basketball tournament , slated to take place in March 2025, for its employees. The event, which features a total prize pool of 18,000 new Leones, will be held at the Young Sportsmen Club (YSC) on Wilkinson Road in Freetown.

The tournament aims to foster team spirit and provide an avenue for employees to engage in recreational activities while promoting a healthy work-life balance. During the unveiling ceremony, Africell’s Chief Executive Officer, Shadi Gerjawi, underscored the importance of the initiative in strengthening staff camaraderie and enhancing workplace enjoyment.

“This initiative is part of our commitment to encouraging our employees to work hard while also having fun,” Shadi Gerjawi stated. He further encouraged all staff members, including the players, to invite their families to attend the matches and enjoy the full entertainment experience.

Africell’s Human Resource Manager, Fobay Jusu, emphasized that the tournament aligns with the company’s broader management strategies aimed at identifying and nurturing talent. “We aim to support our staff in exploring their abilities and by the end of this tournament, we hope to discover potential players who can compete at the national level,” she explained. She further noted that the competition provides an opportunity to develop emerging talents alongside experienced players.

This initiative forms part of Africell’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the growth of basketball in Sierra Leone. The company is actively scouting for talent with the vision of forming a competitive basketball team capable of representing at national and possibly international levels.

The tournament’s prize distribution includes 10,000 new Leones for the champions, 5,000 new Leones for the first runners-up and 3,000 new Leones for the second runners-up.

With the tournament underway, excitement is building among Africell employees as they compete for glory while fostering team spirit and sportsmanship within the company.
