Africell Sierra Leone Officially Launches 3rd Edition of Freetown Marathon

Africell Sierra Leone, one of the nation’s leading telecommunications provider, has announced the launch of the highly anticipated 3rd edition of the Freetown Marathon. The unveiling ceremony was held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Africell’s headquarters on Pivot Street, Wilberforce in Freetown.

The marathon, scheduled for Sunday, December 8, 2024, promises to be a landmark event, drawing participants from across Sierra Leone. Covering a distance of 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles), the race will commence and conclude at Africell’s Beach Data Center.

Africell’s Managing Director, Shadi Gerjawi, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming event. “We are excited to launch the 3rd edition of the Freetown Marathon and to continue supporting the growth of running in Sierra Leone,” he said. Highlighting the event’s dual focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and showcasing the country’s natural beauty, Shadi Gerjawi emphasized the marathon’s inclusivity and community spirit.

Shadi Gerjawi also reflected on the marathon’s family-friendly atmosphere, noting that even dignitaries linger to soak in the energy of the event. “This is more than a race; it’s a celebration of community and shared passion,” he added.

Africell’s long-standing partnerships with organizations like Street Child and others remain central to the success of the Freetown Marathon. Shadi Gerjawi noted the significance of collaboration, stating, “Partnerships are vital to success and Africell is proud to foster those relationships. We extend our gratitude to Street Child for their support over the past 12 years with events like the Makeni Marathon.”

This year’s marathon will feature four race categories to accommodate participants of varying fitness levels:

– Full Marathon: 42.195 km, starting at 6:30 AM

– Half Marathon: 21.097 km, starting at 7:00 AM

– 10K Race: Starting at 7:15 AM

– 5K Fun Run: Starting at 7:20 AM

Participants are encouraged to register through Afrimoney by dialing *227#.

Marketing Communication Manager, Kamanda Koroma, revealed that prize money for this year’s marathon has increased by 40% to further motivate participants. He assured that medical personnel will be on hand during the event to ensure the safety of all runners. Kamanda Koroma also emphasized Africell’s commitment to celebrating health and community engagement, urging newcomers to join the event.

The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA), represented by its Head of Media, Dalton Shyllon, reaffirmed its technical support for the marathon. He highlighted the potential for winners to represent Sierra Leone internationally, emphasizing the life-changing opportunities the event presents.

The President of the Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association, Sahr Morris Jr., encouraged sports journalists to cover the marathon, noting that such experience could open doors to covering global events like the London Marathon.

With Africell’s ongoing commitment to health, community engagement, and sports development, the 3rd edition of the Freetown Marathon is set to be a resounding success. Citizens are encouraged to participate and join in celebrating the spirit of Sierra Leone.
