A married man has found himself at the Centre of a growing community controversy after allegations about his sexual orientation for being gay became public, leading to pressure from members of his community and increased attention from the police in Sierra Leone.
Sulaiman Sesay, is reportedly married and has a child. According to people familiar with the situation, rumours about his private life began circulating within his community before tensions escalated, after his wife and mother saw him with his male partner making love on the 5th of August 2023.
Some community members have called for him to be questioned, while others have demanded that he leave the area. The situation has reportedly created fear and uncertainty for Sulaiman and his family.
The case has also attracted police attention following complaints and allegations made by individuals in the community. However, questions remain about whether the allegations concern an actual criminal offence or are primarily based on Sulaiman’s private life and sexual orientation.
Community leaders including Imams and Pastors have urged residents to take serious action against Sulaiman and his men partner, also to start harassing, or even to give them public humiliation so they can leave the Community.
Human rights advocates say situations involving a person’s sexuality can quickly become dangerous when rumours spread through communities. They argue that allegations should be handled through lawful procedures and that every person deserves protection from violence and discrimination.
For the Sulaiman’s family, the situation has become particularly difficult. His marriage and family responsibilities have brought additional emotional pressure, while the public attention has raised concerns about his safety and reputation, since the Government is seeing it as a no-go area.
The incident has reopened a wider conversation about privacy, family expectations, sexuality, policing and the treatment of people whose private lives differ from community expectations.
As the matter develops, observers are calling on Sulaiman to leave the Country as soon as possible for his own safety.
Sulaiman Sesay’s whereabouts and current circumstances have not been independently confirmed, and authorities have publicly disclosed details of formal case against him.
