Mines Minister Pushes for Mineral Processing and Industrialization at Mining in Motion 2026

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Julius Daniel Mattai, has called for stronger regional cooperation and increased investment in mineral processing to enable African countries to derive greater economic benefits from their vast natural resources.

The Minister made the call during the Mining in Motion 2026 Conference in Accra, Ghana, where he participated in a high-level panel discussion titled : “From Ore to Industry: Building Competitive African Beneficiation Corridors.”

The discussion focused on the urgent need for resource-rich African countries to move beyond the exportation of raw minerals and prioritize local processing, industrial development and greater participation in regional and global value chains.

Minister Julius Daniel Mattai emphasized that Africa must adopt a coordinated approach to mineral beneficiation if the continent is to maximize the economic potential of its natural resources and reduce its longstanding dependence on exporting unprocessed minerals.

He stressed that stronger collaboration among African countries would help address major challenges affecting the mining industry, particularly inadequate infrastructure, unreliable energy supply, limited investment and fragmented regulatory frameworks.

According to the Minister, developing competitive regional beneficiation corridors would enable countries to combine their resources, strengthen industrial capacity and establish more efficient mineral processing and manufacturing industries.

He highlighted the importance of investing in shared transportation networks, reliable regional energy systems and modern logistics infrastructure to facilitate cross-border trade and support industrial expansion.

The Minister further underscored the need to harmonize investment policies and regulatory frameworks to attract domestic and foreign investors interested in establishing mineral processing facilities across the continent.

He maintained that stronger intra-African partnerships would create opportunities for integrated mineral value chains, promote technological advancement, enhance skills development and generate sustainable employment for African citizens.

The Minister’s intervention comes amid increasing global demand for critical minerals used in modern technologies, renewable energy systems and industrial manufacturing, presenting African countries with significant opportunities to expand their participation in international markets.

For Sierra Leone, the promotion of mineral beneficiation aligns with national efforts to diversify the economy, encourage industrial investment, create employment opportunities and increase the mining sector’s contribution to sustainable economic development.

With substantial deposits of iron ore, diamonds, gold, bauxite and rutile, Sierra Leone stands to benefit from policies that encourage greater local processing and value addition instead of relying predominantly on the exportation of raw mineral resources.

Minister Julius Daniel Mattai’s participation in the conference also reinforced Sierra Leone’s commitment to responsible mineral resource management and regional partnerships aimed at ensuring that mining activities deliver meaningful socioeconomic benefits.

The discussions highlighted the importance of practical collaboration among Governments, private investors, mining companies and development partners to mobilize financing, develop processing facilities and strengthen technical capacity.

They also underscored the need for African countries to translate commitments on industrialization into concrete investments capable of improving competitiveness and expanding economic opportunities.

Minister Julius Daniel Mattai’s call reflects a broader continental ambition to transform Africa from a major supplier of raw mineral resources into a competitive centre for mineral processing, manufacturing and industrial development.

His message at Mining in Motion 2026 was clear: Africa must strengthen regional integration, attract strategic investment and prioritize mineral beneficiation to ensure that the continent’s natural wealth translates into sustainable industries, increased employment and lasting prosperity for its people.
