Sierra Leone took center stage at the 10th Powering Africa Summit as Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Julius Daniel Mattai, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the nation’s strides in energy transformation and the pivotal role of U.S.-Africa partnerships on March 6, 2025 in Washington, D.C.
Speaking at the high-profile event, the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources highlighted the impact of the Power Africa Initiative in bolstering Sierra Leone’s regulatory, water and electricity sectors. He credited the $44.4 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant for its instrumental role in these advancements, reinforcing the country’s energy infrastructure.
One of the most significant milestones, according to Julius Daniel Mattai, is the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation’s (DFC) $412 million investment in the Nant Energy gas-to-power project. That initiative, set to double Sierra Leone’s energy capacity, will introduce a 105-megawatt thermal power plant, addressing longstanding energy shortages and driving economic development.
Looking forward, the Minister spotlighted Sierra Leone’s $480 million MCC Compact, launched in 2024, as a game-changer for the nation. The program aims to extend electricity access to 4.6 million people through strategic transmission, distribution and reform projects. He underscored that those efforts will not only electrify homes and businesses but also serve as a catalyst for industrial growth, foreign investment and the exploitation of Sierra Leone’s rich mineral resources, including lithium, nickel and rare earth elements.
Reaffirming the Government’s commitment to sustainable, market-driven energy solutions, he called on investors, policymakers and international partners to capitalize on those opportunities. “Sierra Leone stands at the threshold of an energy revolution,” he declared, urging stakeholders to collaborate in securing a future defined by affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all.
The 10th Powering Africa Summit brought together key stakeholders from across the energy sector, including Government officials, private sector leaders and development partners, to discuss innovative solutions for Africa’s energy needs. Sierra Leone’s engagement at the summit underscores its dedication to securing long-term energy sustainability and economic growth through strategic global partnerships.
