A cross section of the Indian Community in Sierra Leone, led by Acting High Commissioner of the Indian High Commission in Sierra Leone, Neeraj Kumar Saini, on Saturday, October 26, 2024, engaged in a tree-planting activity in Kenema City and further donated ten solar-powered street lights to enhance safety in key areas within the city. A symbolic tree planting was done within the precinct of the Kenema City Hall and others planted at strategic areas within the city. The brief yet significant ceremony of the donation of the solar street lights took place at the Kenema City Council Hall, located on 3 Maada Bio Street and was attended by prominent figures, including Kenema City Mayor, Thomas Karimu Gbandabla Baio, Councillors, community leaders and residents.

During the ceremony, Acting High Commissioner, Neeraj Kumar Saini ,emphasized India’s dedication to supporting the well-being of Sierra Leoneans. Highlighting India’s cultural heritage as the “Land of Festivals,” he shared how the Indian community in Sierra Leone had previously celebrated the Lewali Festival, during which funds were raised for charitable contributions aimed at benefiting local communities. Neeraj Kumar Saini mentioned that the funds collected last year enabled solar street light donations in Wellington and Bo, with Kenema being the third recipient.

Expressing optimism about the impact of the street lights, Neeraj Kumar Saini remarked that the donation would illuminate some of Kenema’s darkest areas, improving safety for residents, especially at night. “We hope these ten solar street lights will enhance security and reduce incidents in dimly lit neighborhoods,” he said. He also commended the people of Kenema for their warm hospitality and praised the city’s leaders, especially the Resident Minister, for their effective governance. He affirmed the Indian community’s commitment to contribute to Kenema’s development.

Mayor Thomas Karimu Gbandabla Baio expressed deep appreciation for the Indian High Commission’s continuous support. Welcoming the delegation, he thanked the Acting High Commissioner and the Indian community for both the tree-planting initiative and the donation of street lights, which he described as invaluable for vulnerable neighborhoods. “We are grateful for these contributions, which directly address some of our community’s needs,” Mayor Thomas Karimu Gbandabla Baio stated.

The Mayor further shared the city’s plan for the solar lights, with designated locations including the Government Hospital, Government Secondary School and the city’s public field among other areas. “These key areas are vital for public service and often used by our community members,” he explained, adding that these sites would be accessible for follow-up by the Indian community to ensure their correct use. Mayor Thomas Karimu Gbandabla Baio underscored the importance of the street lights in reducing crime, as criminal activities often occur in poorly lit areas. “Improving lighting will play a crucial role in deterring criminal activity and enhancing security,” he noted, commending the Indian community’s efforts.

Both the India Acting High Commissioner,  Neeraj Kumar Saini  and Mayor Thomas Karimu Gbandabla Baio Baio expressed hopes for continued collaboration between Kenema and the Indian High Commission, with shared goals of promoting community development and reinforcing bonds between the two nations. This partnership, rooted in mutual respect and a commitment to progress, reflects the Indian High Commission’s larger vision of fostering sustainable development projects that impact lives across Sierra Leone.
