By Abubakarr Harding

In commemorating International Women’s Day, Orange SL Women organized a Food Festival which took the form of a cooking competition among female staff members on Friday, March 10, 2023 at the company’s headquarters in Freetown.

Martha Sumaila, the Head of Communications Department at Orange Sierra Leone, stated that the company organized the event to engage women in the office and to showcase their cooking abilities. She added that the women were organized into different groups from various departments within the office.

The competition was keenly contested, with each group striving to win the grand prize of 3.5 million Leones for the winner, 2.5 million Leones for the second position, and 1.5 million Leones for the third position. She added that to emerge victorious, each group was judged based on the taste of the food, the hygiene of the environment where the food was prepared, the coordination of the team, and the presentation of the food.

Speaking about her experience, Sarine Zubairu from Team Potato Leaves expressed her excitement about participating in the competition. She noted that the event provided a platform for female staff members to showcase their culinary skills and learn from one another.

She added that Orange Sierra Leone Women is committed to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the workplace. The cooking competition is just one of the many initiatives the company has implemented to foster a more inclusive working environment, she said.
