Rokel Commercial Bank (RCBank) has received widespread commendation for its swift intervention in apprehending an individual involved in an attempted fraud at its Charlotte Street branch. The suspect, a relative of an account holder, was caught trying to impersonate the customer to fraudulently obtain a VISA Debit Card and withdraw funds. The individual was immediately handed over to the Sierra Leone Police on February 6, 2025.

Confirming the incident, RCBank’s Head of Public Relations, Aruna Dumbuya, disclosed that the suspect presented the customer’s savings ID and driver’s license in an attempt to secure the debit card through a newly recruited staff member. However, he emphasized that the matter is now under police investigation and it would be premature for the bank to issue any conclusive statements.

Addressing concerns about misinformation, Aruna Dumbuya cautioned against the spread of false narratives by certain individuals, including associates of competitor banks posing as media practitioners. He warned that some have attempted to exploit such incidents for personal gain through fabricated stories and extortion tactics. He reassured the public that RCBank remains committed to transparency and ethical banking practices.

Highlighting the bank’s impressive growth, Aruna Dumbuya noted that under Dr. Ekundayo W.  Gilpin’s leadership, RCBank’s profits surged from Le1.5 billion in 2016 to Le62.7 billion in 2017. The bank has continued to experience steady expansion, with projections indicating a 40% profit increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. Additionally, RCBank has witnessed significant growth in its asset base, equity, customer outreach and corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Aruna Dumbuya urged the public to seek official updates from RCBank’s Public Relations Unit at 39 Wilberforce Street in Freetown, instead of relying on unverified claims that could potentially harm the bank’s reputation. He also issued a strong warning against the unauthorized use of RCBank’s intellectual property, including logos, branding materials and official images.

Emphasizing responsible leadership, Aruna Dumbuya called on Sierra Leoneans to support local businesses, promote domestic financial institutions and contribute to strengthening the national economy. He reaffirmed RCBank’s commitment to serving its stakeholders, including the Government of Sierra Leone, shareholders, staff, customers, media and the communities in which it operates.

It must be noted that since assuming leadership of RCBank in July 2017, Dr. Ekundayo W. Gilpin has transformed the institution into one of Sierra Leone’s most profitable and respected financial entities. Under his stewardship, the bank has won over 200 local and international awards, further solidifying its reputation. Notable accolades awarded to Dr. Ekundayo W. Gilpin include:

  • Commander of the Order of the Rokel
  • Best Chief Executive Officer
  • One of the Most Influential Sierra Leoneans
  • Excellence in Leadership and Development
  • Medal of Honor
  • African Banker of the Year 2023
  • Ambassador for Youths

Most recently, in January 2025, the West African Bankers Association (WABA) honored Dr. Ekundayo W. Gilpin with the prestigious West African Banker of the Year award, a recognition that was widely celebrated across Sierra Leone. Dr. Dr. Ekundayo W. Gilpin dedicated the award to the people of Sierra Leone, RCBank staff, his family and friends.

The bank’s successful handling of the fraud attempt underscores its dedication to safeguarding depositors’ funds and maintaining the integrity of Sierra Leone’s banking sector. RCBank remains focused on excellence, sound financial management and ensuring the security of public funds.
