In a demonstration of generosity and community support, Sewa International Sierra Leone has donated essential food items and medical supplies to the Milton Margai School for the Blind. The donation event took place on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the school premises on Wilkinson Road in Freetown.
The donated items included bags of rice, cooking oil, sugar, mayonnaise, soft drinks, glucose, spaghetti, insecticide, cocoa, milk, biscuits, soap and other essential supplies. These provisions aim to support the school’s feeding program and overall well-being of its pupils.
Sewa International Sierra Leone’s donation is part of its ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, particularly persons with disabilities. The organization recognizes the challenges faced by the visually impaired pupils of Milton Margai School for the Blind and aims to ease their burden by providing food and medical items. Given that the school relies heavily on donations to sustain its feeding program, this gesture will significantly contribute to the welfare of the students.
The donation also aligns with Sewa International’s broader mission of humanitarian service, which includes improving the lives of underprivileged groups through education, healthcare and social empowerment.
Sewa International is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to disaster relief, healthcare, education and community development. Originating from India, the organization operates in various countries, including Sierra Leone, where it provides humanitarian assistance to marginalized communities.
In Sierra Leone, Sewa International has been actively involved in charitable activities, including food distribution, medical aid and educational support. The organization frequently collaborates with local institutions to uplift disadvantaged groups and promote social welfare.
Salieu Turay, Principal of the Milton Margai School for the Blind, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sewa International for their timely intervention. He emphasized the significance of being remembered, particularly for an institution that caters to blind children from primary to tertiary levels.
“It is good that we are remembered. The Indian community has always been supportive and I pray that God blesses them for their kindness,” the Principal said.
He further explained that the school accommodates many blind students who require three meals daily. While acknowledging that the donation may not be sufficient to meet all their needs, he was optimistic that it would sustain them for a considerable period.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Grace Robert, one of the visually impaired pupils, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks.
“On behalf of my fellow pupils, I want to sincerely thank Sewa International Sierra Leone for this wonderful donation. Your kindness means so much to us because it helps ensure that we have enough food to eat and the medicine to keep us healthy.
To our dear Principal and teachers, thank you for your continuous care and dedication to our education and well-being. And to our donors, we appreciate your love and support. May God bless you abundantly and give you the strength to continue your good work.
We promise to make the most of this opportunity by working hard in our studies. Thank you, Sewa International, for putting a smile on our faces today.”
The donation from Sewa International Sierra Leone underscores the importance of community support in addressing the needs of vulnerable groups. The Milton Margai School for the Blind continues to rely on the generosity of organizations and individuals to sustain its mission of providing quality education and care for visually impaired children.
With this act of kindness, Sewa International has not only provided much-needed supplies but also reaffirmed its commitment to humanitarian service in Sierra Leone.
