In just one year, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has made significant strides that are setting the stage for a transformative future in the country’s aviation sector. Under the leadership of its Director General, Madam Musayeroh Barrie, the SLCAA has achieved remarkable progress in key areas such as safety compliance, capacity building and international collaboration, positioning Sierra Leone as a rising player in the global aviation landscape.
A key accomplishment during this period has been the development of a strategic plan aimed at removing Sierra Leone from the European Union’s aviation safety list by early 2025. This plan, crafted through successful engagements with the European Union Safety Commission, reflects the Authority’s strong commitment to meeting international aviation standards. This proactive approach is expected to enhance the safety and reliability of Sierra Leone’s air travel, fostering greater confidence from international airlines and passengers alike.
Another milestone for the SLCAA was the processing of its first application for an Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This historic achievement marks a new era for Sierra Leone’s aviation industry, signaling the Authority’s readiness to support the growth of domestic carriers and enhance the country’s aviation infrastructure. The AOC is a vital step towards boosting national air travel and expanding Sierra Leone’s aviation industry.
Madam Musayeroh Barrie has also emphasized the importance of capacity building. Under her leadership, the SLCAA has rolled out specialized training programs for its technical staff, aimed at enhancing their skills and expertise. Ongoing training in Italy has further developed the team’s technical capabilities, ensuring that Sierra Leone’s aviation authority is equipped with highly skilled professionals ready to meet the demands of a growing sector.
Perhaps the most significant international collaboration of the year was the signing of a management service agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in August, during the Air Navigation Conference in Montreal. This landmark agreement is tailored to meet Sierra Leone’s specific needs and includes comprehensive training programs designed to raise the standards of the country’s aviation operations. A key aspect of this agreement is the establishment of an ICAO-recognized training school, a cornerstone of Madam Musayeroh Barrie’s vision. This training school will play a pivotal role in developing Sierra Leone’s capacity to train aviation professionals and technicians, positioning the country as a regional leader in civil aviation expertise.
“These achievements are a testament to the dedication of the SLCAA staff and the collaborative efforts of our partners,” said Madam Musayeroh Barrie. “In just one year, we have laid a foundation that will propel Sierra Leone’s aviation sector to new heights.”
With a clear vision and strong leadership, the SLCAA has made substantial progress in its first year and the results are evident. Sierra Leone’s aviation sector is now on a path to becoming a regional leader in air transport, opening new opportunities for national and international connectivity. As the country continues to enhance its aviation infrastructure, it is poised to attract more investments, create jobs and boost the economy, firmly establishing Sierra Leone as a key player in the global aviation industry.
