U.S. Government Partners with Bennimix to Enhance Food Security in Sierra Leone

By Foday Moriba Conteh

The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), on October 30, 2024, announced a strategic partnership with Bennimix Food Company in Bo to boost food security in Sierra Leone. This collaboration, known as the Bennimix Outgrowers Activity, represents a significant investment aimed at increasing agricultural productivity and expanding the availability of nutritious, locally produced foods. With over $400,000 in funding, this three-year initiative underscores the U.S. Government’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in Sierra Leone.

The Bennimix Outgrowers Activity will empower more than 5,000 smallholder farmers across the country, providing them with essential tools, training and consistent market access, alongside technical assistance to maximize crop yields. This approach is designed to strengthen local supply chains, reducing Sierra Leone’s dependence on costly food imports while enhancing the availability of nutritious foods for local markets and vulnerable populations. Additionally, the initiative aims to create sustainable income opportunities for smallholder farmers, supporting Sierra Leone’s progress toward self-sufficiency in food production.

As Sierra Leone prioritizes agricultural growth and job creation, this partnership will play a key role in advancing national goals to increase food production, reduce hunger and stimulate economic growth. By focusing on local food production and expanding markets for smallholder farmers, the Bennimix Outgrowers Activity aligns with Sierra Leone’s vision of enhanced food sovereignty.

“This partnership with Bennimix exemplifies the U.S. Government’s commitment to promoting economic growth and strengthening food security in Sierra Leone,” stated a USAID spokesperson. “Through market-based solutions, we’re driving sustainable development and building resilience within local communities.”

The Bennimix Outgrowers Activity is part of a broader U.S. effort to foster development through locally-driven, market-based solutions, highlighting a shared vision for long-term growth and resilience in Sierra Leone.
