It could be recalled that in the recent past The Calabash Newspaper informed members of the public about the critical medical condition of a girl child, Christiana Bourstina Tarawallie, fondly called, Little Christiana, further soliciting assistance for her advanced medical treatment.
The appeal did not go in vain as Little Christiana has successfully undergone surgery at the Choithram Memorial Hospital and she is now in a stable condition and she has been discharged on Saturday 6th November 2021.
The successful surgery was done by Dr. A.K Kabineh. The Management and Staff of The Calabash Newspaper are joining the family members of Little Christiana to express profound thanks and appreciation to the medical staff for their swift and action-oriented work.
Deepest thanks and appreciation is also extended to the Management and Staff of the Choithram Memorial Hospital and Harish Agnani, an influential personality who is one of those in charge of the hospital, for their tremendous efforts in saving Little Christiana’s life.
According to Harish Agnani, medical practitioners of the hospital removed the coin successfully on the 5th November 2021 and did it free of cost.
It must be highlighted that had it not been for the intervention of Choithram Hospital, it would have cost The Sick Pikin Project at least $15,000 and a period of not less than 5 months to do the fundraising which would have meant more pain for the little “angel”.
A single penny was not requested from The Sick Pikin Project, it was all done for free.
“I was very worried and now I am super excited as it was really fast, the solution came like a dream,” said little Christiana’s father, John Tarawallie, as he expressed his deepest gratitude to Choithram Memorial Hospital, Dr. A. K Kabineh and The Sick Pikin Project.
Christiana and Father arrived late at night in Freetown from Makeni where they are residing and got to the hospital premise early in the morning before she was prepared for the theatre.
Christiana Bourstina Tarawallie is a little girl living with her parents. She’s such a jovial girl that always wants to help her parents with chores.
Unfortunately on the 29th October 2021 in the process of helping her parents to carry bundles of water, she then placed the coin that was in her hand inside her mouth for her to carry the water properly, she mistakenly swallowed the coin.
Immediately that happened she alerted her parents of what had happened. Her parents tried to render first aid treatment by placing a finger in her mouth in order for her to throw up and also by giving her plenty of bananas but all proved futile.
The following day which was on the 30th of October little Christiana was taken to the hospital where several assessments and scans were done.
They later advised the parents to seek advanced medical service in Freetown so that the coin can be removed before it goes further down.
According to the Alfred Charles of the Sick Pikin Project, “Compassionate actions require continuous trust and we are grateful as a Project to have built trust on a consistent basis.”

It could be remembered that in the recent past, Choithram Hospital decided to embark on the latest developments in order to ensure that it is put on a sound footing just like any other hospital in a developed country.
The hospital commissioned the third Operation Theatre (OT) which is well equipped with an Operation Theatre Table, New Led Light with endo mode for laparoscopic operations, and a new anesthesia work station. Operating tables, in all the theatres, are designed to meet all special requirements of operating theatres with powerful and stable electro-hydraulic systems. LED operating lights are designed to meet all surgical illumination requirements of operating theatres.
Another new development that the Choithram Memorial Hospital has achieved, according to the Medical Superintendent, is securing new motorized Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds with New Cardiac monitors. These beds could be elevated, tilted or brought into the most comfortable positions by the touch of a button.
The six (6) Intensive Care Unit beds are beds specialized for supporting infection control, providing comfort, efficacy, safety, and ease of use, and enhancing effective risk management in hospitals.
“These are equipped with assessors, x-ray cassette base holder, and step-less pneumatic adjustment designed for assisting healthcare staff,” he stated.
In 2020, through the efforts of the Sick Pikin Project and Choithram Hospital, the life of one Mamie Mattia, an 11 years old child from Bo District who has been suffering from Nephrotic syndrome for more than 2 two years was saved with treatment done at the hospital free of charge.
Through the Sick Pikin Project, young children of different ages and from varying backgrounds, with rare or extraordinary health conditions received specialized treatments overseas.
The Outreach Coordinator at Sick Pikin Project, Alfred Charles, in collaboration with other colleagues and other partners, has been very instrumental in devising ways and means to raise funds in order to help the unfortunate victims get advanced treatment.
