Sierra Leone and members of the diaspora are celebrating one of the nation’s most revered gospel voices as internationally acclaimed singer and humanitarian, Victoria Fornah, popularly known as Vicky Fornah, marks another year of life and impact.

Widely respected for her powerful gospel music and longstanding humanitarian work, Vicky Fornah has spent more than three decades inspiring audiences across Africa, Europe, North America and beyond. Her music and outreach initiatives have touched millions of lives, making her one of Sierra Leone’s most influential cultural and spiritual ambassadors.

Born and raised in Freetown, Vicky Fornah began her musical journey at the age of ten as a choir singer at the Michael Miller Memorial Wesleyan Church in Lumley. From those humble beginnings, she rose to become a celebrated gospel artist whose songs continue to resonate with listeners around the world.

Vicky Fornah’s music gained widespread recognition during one of Sierra Leone’s most challenging periods. In the aftermath of the country’s civil war, her music became a source of comfort and spiritual encouragement for many citizens seeking hope and healing.

Her widely acclaimed song “Cry Africa,” released in 1999, quickly became one of the most recognizable gospel anthems of the era. The song’s message of peace, unity and restoration resonated deeply with audiences and contributed to her growing reputation as a gospel voice of inspiration.

She later released several notable albums, including “Hold My Hand,” which gained popularity across the African continent and beyond. The album’s powerful themes of faith, resilience and spiritual renewal earned her multiple accolades and strengthened her standing as one of Sierra Leone’s most accomplished gospel artists.

“My mission is to use my voice to heal hearts, empower women and restore peace. Gospel music is not just melody; it is a ministry of hope,” Vicky Fornah once stated.

Beyond her musical achievements, Vicky Fornah is widely recognized for her humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting vulnerable communities across Sierra Leone.

For many years, she has actively championed educational initiatives, particularly in rural communities where access to learning resources remains limited. Through her charitable work, she has supported schools, provided learning materials and advocated for increased opportunities for children, especially girls.

Her dedication to education stems from a belief that knowledge and opportunity are key pillars of national development.

“If my voice can open one school or inspire one child to dream, then I have done my part,” she once remarked.

Her commitment to community development has earned admiration both within Sierra Leone and internationally.

In recent years, Vicky Fornah has also introduced a unique initiative known as the Royal Tea Party, a faith-inspired gathering that promotes spiritual reflection, emotional healing and personal well-being.

First launched in the United States and later expanded to the United Kingdom and Ireland, the initiative blends faith, fellowship and discussions on mental health and self-care. The gatherings aim to create a welcoming environment where participants can reconnect with themselves spiritually while celebrating life and community.

According to Vicky Fornah, the initiative highlights the importance of emotional wellness and spiritual renewal in modern society.

“Through this movement, I want people to see that worship can be joyful, elegant and healing,” she explained.

Plans are currently underway to expand the Royal Tea Party initiative across Europe and Sierra Leone, with the vision of reaching more communities and promoting mental health awareness alongside spiritual development.

Throughout her career, Vicky Fornah has received numerous awards and recognitions for her contributions to music and humanitarian service.

Among the accolades she has received are Best Female Artist, Best Selling Album Award, the Women of God Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sierra Leone Entertainment Awards (SLEA).

In 2023, she received one of Sierra Leone’s highest national honours when President Dr. Julius Maada Bio conferred upon her the Order of the Rokel (OR) in recognition of her contributions to the music industry and her continued humanitarian service to the nation.

The honour was widely regarded as a significant acknowledgment of her impact on Sierra Leone’s cultural and social development.

Despite decades of success, Vicky Fornah continues to remain active in music and community outreach. Her recent releases, including the inspirational song “Battle Winner,” reflect her continued dedication to spreading messages of faith, resilience and hope.

Through her music, humanitarian projects and spiritual initiatives, she continues to encourage women, youth and communities to pursue their aspirations and contribute positively to society.

As she celebrates another birthday, admirers across Sierra Leone and the global diaspora are paying tribute to a woman whose voice and service have left a lasting imprint on the nation.
