A chilling crime has sent shockwaves through the community of Kenema as authorities launch an urgent investigation into the brutal murder of Salim Alie Dayeck, an 80-year-old Lebanese businessman. He was found dead in his residence on Hangha Road early Wednesday morning September 11, 2024, with multiple stab wounds that indicate a violent struggle.

Initial reports suggest that Salim Alie Dayeck sustained severe injuries while attempting to defend himself. Neighbours describe the scene as chaotic, with evidence of a struggle before he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Sierra Leone Police have classified the incident as potentially linked to ritualistic motives, a troubling indication of the crime’s nature.

The main suspect in the case, 22-year-old Umaru Sama, a shop attendant who worked for Salim Alie Dayeck, is currently in custody along with twenty other individuals who are assisting investigators. Eyewitness accounts reveal that Umaru Sama was seen behaving suspiciously after the murder, attempting to access Salim Alie Dayeck’s shop with keys that raised the alarm among neighbours.

Kamal Mamtalla Mansour, a fellow Lebanese merchant, played a crucial role in alerting the Police. After several failed attempts to contact Salim Alie Dayeck, he grew suspicious and went to check on him, only to discover the elderly businessman lying in a pool of blood in his bathroom. Kamal Mamtalla Mansour reported seeing four unidentified individuals fleeing the scene, further complicating the investigation.

Crime Scene Investigators discovered two blood-stained kitchen knives in the bedroom and Salim Alie Dayeck’s body has since been transported to the Kenema Government Hospital for an autopsy. Sub-Inspector Brima James Musa has urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the case, emphasizing the importance of patience as the investigation unfolds.

This incident marks the second murder reported in Kenema within a month, raising concerns about public safety in the area. Local authorities are under pressure to ensure a thorough investigation and to address fears within the community. Residents are calling for swift action from the Government, urging President Dr. Julius Maada Bio to ensure that justice is served and to reassure citizens that such acts of violence will not be tolerated.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a well-respected businessman, known for his kindness and contributions to local commerce. Police have promised to keep the public informed as more details emerge in this tragic case.
