Sierra Leone on Course for First-Ever Records and Archive Policy

By Foday Moriba Conteh

Sierra Leone is making significant strides toward establishing its first-ever Records and Archive Policy, following a successful validation session held on Monday October 21, 2024. The initiative has been widely praised, with Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, highlighting President Julius Maada Bio’s visionary leadership as the driving force behind this important development.

Minister Chernor Bah acknowledged that while progress on such a policy began under the previous administration, it has only gained real momentum under President Bio’s leadership. “The previous Government had done some work on this and even brought a Bill to Parliament in 2017. However, since President Bio took office in 2018, we have intensified efforts. We are now working on a comprehensive Records and Archive Policy for the first time in the country, which will also include a review of the relevant law, to be presented to Parliament later,” the Minister stated.

The development of this policy forms part of a broader governmental effort to review and establish policies in four critical areas: the National Media and Information Policy, the National Film Policy, the National Civic Education Policy and the National Records and Archives Policy.
