The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2026 on Sunday, March 8, paying special tribute to women in the aviation sector whose dedication, professionalism and leadership continue to inspire progress within the industry.
At the center of the celebration was the recognition of the Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Madam Musayeroh Barrie, whose leadership has been widely acknowledged as a driving force behind ongoing reforms and modernization efforts within Sierra Leone’s aviation sector.
In a message marking the global celebration, the Authority emphasized the critical role women play in shaping the aviation industry, noting that women are not only aspiring to reach the skies but are actively navigating them with courage, professionalism and excellence.
“On this International Women’s Day, I proudly celebrate the women of the SLCAA and across the aviation industry whose dedication, professionalism and courage continue to inspire excellence in our skies,” Madam Musayeroh Barrie stated.
She further stressed the importance of empowering women, highlighting that providing opportunities for women strengthens institutions and benefits society as a whole.
“When we give opportunities, we all gain,” she added.
The celebration formed part of the wider global recognition of women’s contributions across various sectors, particularly in industries that have historically been male-dominated, such as aviation.
Within the SLCAA, women continue to play significant roles across multiple departments, including aviation safety oversight, regulatory compliance, air transport management and policy development. According to the Authority, their dedication and expertise remain central to maintaining international standards and ensuring the smooth functioning of Sierra Leone’s aviation sector.
Special appreciation was extended to Madam Musayeroh Barrie for her visionary leadership and commitment to advancing aviation development in Sierra Leone. Since assuming office in 2023, she has led several initiatives aimed at strengthening regulatory frameworks, improving safety oversight systems and enhancing the country’s engagement with international aviation institutions.
One of the major priorities under her leadership has been addressing Sierra Leone’s long-standing presence on the European Union Air Safety List, where the country has remained since 2008 due to concerns relating to regulatory oversight and compliance with international aviation safety standards.
To address this, the SLCAA under Madam Musayeroh Barrie’s leadership has developed a comprehensive reform roadmap in collaboration with European aviation authorities. The plan focuses on strengthening institutional capacity, improving inspector training, enhancing safety oversight mechanisms and ensuring full compliance with standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Two high-level engagements with the EU Safety Commission have already taken place, establishing clear benchmarks and timelines for implementing the necessary reforms.
Aviation experts have indicated that the EU restriction primarily relates to regulatory oversight capacity rather than operational deficiencies by individual airlines. As such, the SLCAA’s renewed focus on strengthening institutional structures is widely regarded as a crucial step toward achieving eventual removal from the EU blacklist.
At the same time, Sierra Leone has continued to expand its air connectivity through strategic partnerships with regional and international airlines, a development expected to strengthen passenger traffic and support the country’s growing tourism and business sectors.
Madam Musayeroh Barrie’s leadership has also attracted international recognition. She has been selected as a panelist in a global aviation webinar organized by the Singapore Aviation Academy in collaboration with Women in Aviation Singapore. The high-level forum will examine aviation’s role in promoting sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
Observers say her participation alongside global aviation leaders reflects growing confidence in Sierra Leone’s reform agenda and regulatory progress.
As the first female and youngest Director General of the SLCAA, Madam Musayeroh Barrie continues to combine institutional reform with inclusive leadership. From advancing aviation safety standards to promoting greater participation of women in the sector, her stewardship represents a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s aviation development.
While Sierra Leone continues to strengthen its aviation industry and expand international connectivity, the SLCAA maintains that the contributions of women will remain vital in sustaining progress, ensuring safety and shaping the future of the country’s skies.
The International Women’s Day celebration concluded with a message of appreciation to all women working within the aviation sector, acknowledging their resilience, intelligence and invaluable contributions to national development.
