The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has reinforced its commitment to national development and regional integration by providing efficient ferry transportation and exceptional hospitality services in support of the 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit, which is being hosted by the Government of Sierra Leone.
As Heads of State, Government officials and other high-profile delegates continue to converge at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Center in Lungi, the Authority has ensured smooth daily transportation between Freetown and Lungi through its coordinated ferry operations. Staff have been strategically deployed at the Government Wharf, Kissy Ferry Terminal and Tagrin Ferry Terminal to facilitate the safe, secure, and comfortable movement of dignitaries attending the regional gathering.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the Director General of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority, Yankuba Askia Bio, with the backing of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation under the leadership of Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay. The coordinated effort forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to successfully host one of West Africa’s most significant diplomatic events while showcasing Sierra Leone’s capacity to organize international conferences of the highest standard.
During an inspection tour aboard the MV Muzuk on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Rex Bonapha, expressed satisfaction with the quality of services being provided by the Authority. He praised the professionalism of the staff and described both the ferry operations and customer service as “top notch,” noting that the level of efficiency displayed reflects positively on the country’s image.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that the dedication demonstrated by the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority illustrates the important role public institutions play in supporting Government initiatives. He encouraged other state institutions to emulate the Authority’s commitment, stressing that strong inter-agency collaboration is essential in presenting Sierra Leone as a capable and reliable host nation before the international community.
The ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit has brought together leaders from across West Africa to deliberate on key regional issues, including peace and security, economic integration, trade, governance, infrastructure development and sustainable prosperity. Sierra Leone’s hosting of the summit further strengthens its standing as a stable democracy and a trusted partner within the ECOWAS region while creating opportunities to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation among member states.
For the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority, its contribution to the successful hosting of the summit reflects its statutory responsibility to provide safe, reliable and efficient maritime transport and port services. By maintaining uninterrupted ferry operations, ensuring passenger safety and delivering quality customer service, the Authority continues to support national connectivity, facilitate economic activity and enhance Sierra Leone’s international reputation.
The continuous presence of SLPHA personnel at the country’s key ferry terminals throughout the summit highlights the institution’s readiness to contribute beyond its traditional operational responsibilities. Through its dedication, professionalism and efficient service delivery, the Authority has played a significant role in ensuring the smooth movement of delegates while demonstrating that effective maritime transport remains a vital pillar of Sierra Leone’s economic development, regional engagement and successful hosting of major international events.
