Free Cleft Lip & Palate Surgeries at Choithram Memorial Hospital in December

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Choithram Memorial Hospital in Freetown is set to host a free surgery camp for patients with cleft lip and palate from December 9 to December 14, 2024. This humanitarian initiative, aimed at providing life-changing medical care to those in need, will offer free surgeries to individuals suffering from these conditions, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to essential healthcare.

Leading the surgical team will be Professor (Dr.) Bayo Aluko-Olokun, a renowned Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon from Abuja, Nigeria. Dr. Aluko-Olokun is widely recognized across West Africa for his pioneering work in cleft lip and palate repair, particularly through the innovative Olokun-Olaitan approach. He will be supported by Dr. Eric Wongo, Choithram’s in-house Plastic Surgeon, and his dedicated team, who will work together to ensure the highest standards of care.

Dr. Aluko-Olokun’s expertise in both surgery and research has earned him a prestigious reputation in the field, and his participation in the camp offers a unique opportunity for Sierra Leoneans to receive top-tier treatment for conditions that often go untreated due to financial constraints.

Choithram Memorial Hospital has long been committed to providing vital healthcare services to the community, and this surgery camp is just one of many initiatives designed to support individuals who lack access to specialized medical care. The camp will serve not only those with untreated cleft lip and palate but also individuals who may require additional corrective procedures after prior surgeries.

Dr. Gowrinath M. George, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, thanking Dr. Aluko-Olokun and his team for honoring the hospital’s invitation. He encouraged Sierra Leoneans in need to take advantage of this opportunity for free treatment.

In addition to this surgery camp, Choithram Memorial Hospital has recently enhanced its capabilities with the installation of a state-of-the-art MRI machine, which has been operational since January 2024. Harish Agnani, Chief Administrator of the Choithram Group, reiterated the hospital’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to the community.

Registration for the surgery camp is now open, with eligible patients invited to register by calling +232 76 541 331 or visiting the hospital at Hill Station, Freetown. Choithram Memorial Hospital continues to exemplify its mission to improve public health and offer transformative solutions for Sierra Leoneans in need.
