Africell SL Facilitates Free Breast Cancer Screening & Treatment for Employees

By Esther Wright

In a bid to promote health and raise awareness about breast cancer, Africell Sierra Leone has launched an initiative providing free breast cancer screening and treatment for all its employees. This effort coincides with the global Breast Cancer Awareness Month observed every October, further showcasing the company’s dedication to the well-being of its staff.

The event was held at Africell’s headquarters on Pivot Street at Wilberforce Village in Freetown. During the launch, Africell Sierra Leone’s Chief Operating Officer, Malek El Koussa, stressed the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of regular screening. He commended the Well Woman Clinic for its consistent support in offering accessible breast cancer care, stating: “As part of Africell’s corporate social responsibility, we are committed to supporting the health of the communities we serve, particularly our female employees.” He encouraged staff to take full advantage of the free screenings and reminded attendees that breast cancer also affects men, even though it is more prevalent among women.

Head Sister of the Well Woman Clinic, Adijatu Salam, expressed her pride in the longstanding partnership between the clinic and Africell. She emphasized that this collaboration has been instrumental in providing employees with essential health services. “Our partnership with Africell ensures that their staff have access to life-saving screenings. It’s part of our shared goal to prioritize health,” Sister Adijatu Salam said.

She also took the opportunity to educate the audience about breast cancer, its risks and the importance of early detection. “While the exact cause of breast cancer is unknown, there are certain factors that increase the risk of developing the disease,” she explained. She reassured staff that early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and recovery and she stressed the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Africell’s initiative is part of the company’s wider corporate social responsibility strategy, aimed at promoting health and wellness in the communities they operate in. The free screening event serves as a timely reminder of the critical role regular health checks play in saving lives.
