In a bid to provide students with a much-needed break from the pressures of academia, the College of Digital Excellence (CODE) hosted its annual beach outing at #2 Beach on Saturday 22 February 2025. The event, which has become a hallmark of the college’s calendar, was designed to foster social networking, create valuable connections and offer students a chance to unwind. With the sun shining and the waves crashing in the background, the atmosphere was set for a day of fun, relaxation and camaraderie.
The beach outing, a recurring event at CODE, was filled with exciting activities that included a lively football match and several entertaining games such as tug of war, sack races and smart roll. These activities not only brought the students together but also allowed them to experience the lighter side of college life in a way that was both engaging and fun.
Abdulai Koroma, a first-year student studying Software Engineering, explained why he was so eager to participate in the event. “I was motivated to attend because I wanted to interact with my colleagues. During class sessions, we find it difficult to interact because of the tight class schedules,” he shared. Abdulai Koroma was grateful for the chance to meet with students from different campuses, particularly those from the Wellington campus, making the event a bridge for building friendships and exchanging ideas.
Rajesh Kumar, the Technical Consultant at CODE, elaborated on the significance of the outing. He explained that with the college now spanning both the Eastern and Western parts of Freetown, it was important for students from these campuses to gather and bond in an informal setting. “Interactions like this are vital for creating a sense of unity among students and it’s crucial for their social development,” he said. Rajesh Kumar emphasized that extracurricular activities like the outing are part of CODE’s broader culture, encouraging students to be well-rounded individuals.
After a break filled with laughter, friendly competition and relaxation, Rajesh Kumar added that students would be able to return to their studies with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.
Fatmata Abu, another student, expressed her appreciation for the event, calling it the perfect way to refresh after a demanding first semester. “It’s a great opportunity to unwind and recharge,” she said. She also encouraged aspiring students to consider enrolling at CODE, praising the institution’s exceptional learning environment and top-notch facilities. “In terms of information technology, they are the best,” she concluded.
This annual beach outing perfectly reflected CODE’s commitment to nurturing its students’ intellectual and social growth, offering them an environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.
