“A2A seeks to empower girls by providing them with educational scholarships and funding their education pursuits  in order to go through the primary school level,” she intimated  reiterating how they are keen on making girls become confident to pursue their dreams and become role models for others to emulate. She pointed out that her organization is aware of the fact that some girls drop out of school at the primary school stage before proceeding to the secondary school level stressing how the chances of  re-entering the educational system  could be very slim.

She admonished pupils to take their studies serious underscoring how education is the key to success.  “Education is a process of learning that one goes through in order to become somebody in society,” she inspired.

In that vein she encouraged them to take the opportunities they are offering in order to achieve their dreams and become great people in society who will in return give back to society.

She expressed her warmest appreciation to the United States of America Board members namely: Dr. Kathy Forlenza and her daughters Kate and Stefanie, Mrs. Stephanie Pangia and her daughter Sarah, her daughter Michaela and other generous sponsors for their tremendous financial contributions they have been rendering to her organization to undertake their interventions in various communities in the country.

She said with the support of the school materials such will enhance her learning ability.

She called on other humanitarian entities to support the organization in order to capacitate them to continue to implement programmes or projects.

Alhaji Conteh, a parent of one of the beneficiaries, expressed his deepest appreciation to the organization for the gesture, adding that with their support it will lessen the financial burden on him as a parent.

NP Sierra Leone Leads Where Others Follow

National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited

By Amin Kef Sesay

Sierra Leone’s leading oil marketing company, the National Petroleum (NP) Sierra Leone Limited, has been very steadfast in its service delivery of high standard petroleum products which it imports since this country is not an oil producing nation.

Due to good managerial decisions the company has been doing extremely and exemplary well in terms of always ensuring the availability of those products in a timely manner which makes it possible for individuals to have ready access to them. It is no secret that the seriousness of the company, with regards ambitiously striving towards reaching the pinnacle within the business landscape not only in this country but far beyond, has heightened the confidence of its business partners to continue business relationships.

It must be hammered that NP-SL-Ltd is not extraordinary but like any business entity the company is susceptible to internal and external shocks that impact on its vibrancy and sustainability. Currently, the high exchange rate of the dollar to the Leone, meaning the Leone has drastically depreciated, is affecting many entities, creating inflation (prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed) and impinging negatively on the overall standard of living. NP-SL –Ltd pays for petroleum products it imports and understandably whenever the price of the dollar goes up then it means the company is spending more Leones to buy dollars in order do so.

Accessing the very dollar has turned out to be a huge task as it is scarce which has created a situation whereby the company has to go the extra-mile to get the required amount of dollars it needs from time to time to import the products it markets.

For such an important company to continue to thrive it is but very prudent on the part of the Petroleum Regulatory Agency, the Bank of Sierra Leone and other commercial banks to give it the maximum attention and support it needs in the company’s bid to do foreign exchange transactions.

There is no business entity in the world that will be dishing out its products, whether manufactured or imported, without receiving payments for them. Such has the tendency of killing that business entity and without understanding that dynamic some will just conclude that the owners and managers are not doing things seriously to continue to survive.

According to an in-depth investigation that was mounted by this medium it came out glaringly that NP-SL-Ltd, in good faith, entered into business agreements with certain entities on a loan and pay later basis but from what has so far transpired it seems as if those entities are reneging to live up to expectation. This is hampering the viability of the company which is why it is of utmost importance for those debts to be honoured.

It has gone down the annals of history that the company is impressively one of the most successful indigenous entities that is sustainably forging ahead when others have collapsed for a variety of reasons.

A marked reality of the company’s viability is evident in its opening of branches in Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, The Gambia and in all of those places it is providing qualitative customer care services to residents, making it a prime priority.

It has been established that NP has been meaningfully contributing to economic growth through payment of taxes and rolling out meaningful interventions in the discharge of its Corporate Social Responsibility which are transforming lives and improving communities.

The company has gained reputation for offering different jobs to Sierra Leoneans throughout the country where it is operating and this has helped in improving standards of living.

NP-SL gives preference to Sierra Leoneans with regards offering jobs, a clear indication that it is strictly poised towards adherence to the country’s Local Content Policy. Utilizing local talents makes it possible for indigenes to imbibe useful knowledge and skills through training exercises that could be applicable in other places.

The company has one of the best cooking gadgets, known as NP Gas that offers suitability for cooking purposes. There are different cylinder sizes and they could be located at all the filling stations of the company and also accessed from authorized agents or dealers.

In this digital age, moving away from the traditional way of transacting business has now become the norm. It is along such a line that it was thought wise on the part of the shareholders and Management to introduce the use of smart cards. With these cards, customers can procure petroleum products of whatever quantity they do desire.

“Using NP smart card always makes transactions very easy and convenient for me,” Amadu Koroma, an engineer informed.

For its solid service delivery to its numerous and esteemed customers right across the country, the company over the years, has gained widespread recognition and admiration evident in bagging awards from different organizations.

The latest was being awarded “Best Company of the Year” on 6th July 2019 during the National Business Award 2018/2019.

NP is really around for business, contributing positively to the socio-economic development of the country but it must be reiterated that contractual business agreements must be strictly adhered to by other parties so that such an important company will continue to operate unfettered.

By Theophellos Sahr Gbenda

Adding value to the rebranding stride to make Sierra Leone more attractive in the International Community Sierra Leone’s Special Envoy for Trade and Investment, Abubakarr A. Kai Kai popularly known as Abu Kai, has hit headlines in the United States of America following a thrilling statement he delivered at the Harvard Alumni Club in New York City.

He went further to state that, “I am here to give you a share in 5.4 million hectares of the world’s finest land space for agriculture, a fair share in one of the world’s richest marine reserves, untapped oil and gas fields, proven mineral resources and an opportunity to be part of the great infrastructural transformation of Sierra Leone”.

NP-Sierra Leone Wants Overdue Debts to be Settled

General Manager NP, Kobi Walker

By Amin Kef Sesay

The National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL-Ltd) is really striving through challenging times to continue to effectively deliver on its mission, which is to avail individuals or entities qualitative petroleum products. It must be highlighted that the company is a 100% indigenously owned business entity that has stood the test of time, weathered various storms but interestingly is performing effectively to the consternation of many in a country where the Pull Him/Her Down Syndrome as well as the execution of bad economic policies have killed many home grown or local companies.

NP-SL is well known for 1st for Customer Service as the shareholders of the company and its past and present Managerial teams see treating all classes of its customers with respect and giving them the necessary attention they deserve. In the business world, mutual trust and cooperation are very much significant. A business entity has certain customers it highly trusts based on integrity and commitment. For NP-SL it has for long devised a system whereby certain customers or entities are availed the opportunity to loan and make payments later in a way that could be convenient for both parties.

Petroleum products are not produced in this country and unlike in the past when crude oil was refined to get end products such as petrol, diesel, kerosene, gas such for now is not taking place as the refinery was completely vandalized by rebels during the 11 years senseless war that nearly paralyzed the entire nation. This simply means that petroleum products are imported into the country and one company that has been at the forefront of doing so is the National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL-Ltd). It has been doing so diligently and timely thereby preventing the occurrence of shortage on the market and taking cognizance of the significance of petroleum products any form of shortage will create dire consequences.

One could be right to say that NP-SL is not the only company that markets petroleum products in the country as there are others that do the same. However, one can categorically state that for now NP-SL is the leading oil marketing company in the country and it has been widely acclaimed for efficiently doing so.

It must be made abundantly clear that for any business to thrive then there is bound to be sincerity on the part of all. What one is trying to hammer home within this context is that those whom have been trusted and given loans are expected to timely repay in order to enhance the proper functionality of any business entity.

NP-SL presently finds itself in such a quagmire with regards reclaiming debts. Lamentably, the entities that have fallen short in terms of repayment of loans to NP-SL, running into billions of Leones, are mainly certain Ministries, Departments and Agencies. How could one view the overdue of payment of loans by the Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the Sierra Leone Police, the Ministry of Energy, Government contracted road construction companies to NP-SL vis-à-vis the continued viability of the company?

This medium is not holding a brief for the oil marketing company but as an independent, objectively focused watchdog we need to put the records straight.

Here is a country where public servants consume electricity and water supplies with reckless abandon but their institutions are deliberately refusing to pay for those utilities. Logically, this sort of negative attitude has the tendency to cripple both State and private institutions and to a certain extent it has been unfair to unjustifiably criticize Guma Valley Water Company (GUMA), the Electricity, Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) among others for purportedly falling short in delivery.

This way of doing things in this country is very counter-productive and will frustrate direct investment from within and without. Something must be done urgently in that direction to put NP-SL on the right footing as it is an important entity in this country.

Demonstrating its dogged commitment to the socio-economic development of the country the company is maintaining a policy of strictly adhering to the Local Content Policy ensuring that it has a maximum of indigenous staff in its employ.

As a matter of fact some members of staff continue to benefit from various trainings that have afforded them the conduit to imbibe useful skills to efficiently carry out certain tasks. If we are counting the number of companies that have upheld the Local Content Policy, without any iota of doubt, NP-SL could be seen at the top. This intrinsic nationalistic posture of the company runs through and it is a sine qua non for overall national development. If such a compliance rate should have been followed by other local companies, willingly, without any pressure from the relevant authorities then indisputably this country should have been miles away in its development trajectory.

In its drive to optimize customer satisfaction the company went the extra mile to install calibrated pumping machines which are not only modern but trustworthy, as opposed to old pumping machines which certain unscrupulous individuals used to cheat unassuming customers. This is helping in holding customers’ confidence high assuring them that they are dealing with a very transparent entity. The friendliness of NP’s pump attendants is very impressive and they are always there to timely respond to various concerns.

Still within the purview of 1st for Customer Care, the company is always in position to enter into payment plans with its reliable and dependable customers including Ministries, Departments and Agencies for supplied fuel and lubricants as long as all the necessary modalities have been put in place. When cognizance is taken of the fact that some of these institutions receive intermittent budgetary allocations then such an arrangement is very significant.

Its significance in real terms borders on functional continuity of those institutions as they will be assured of supplies of petroleum products in as much as they keep honoring their obligations.

For those who have not tried NP Gas for the first time it is now time to give it a try. Designed in sizable varying cylinders and sold at various NP Filling Stations, this cooking device has been rated as one of the best that is on offer for sale. NP Gas is safe, user friendly and portable. Trying it will spur you to recommend it to others.

NP Smart Card is now in vogue and is one of the latest technological devices used to purchase petroleum products. Using it has attendant advantages as evident in procuring fuel at any time of the day even during times when monies could not be accessed from banks. It is secured, easy to use and very quick. It is now trending.

To crystallize proposed projects into tangible realities on the ground, Government needs the required financial resources to effectively do so and one sure way is from collection of taxes which is the mandate of the National Revenue Authority (NRA).  NP is one big tax payer to Government and it has been doing so timely.

The company’s presence in Guinea, Liberia, The Gambia and Ivory Coast shows that it is around for serious business. It is an embodiment of serious mindedness on the part of Sierra Leoneans who believe that what man can do then man can still do.

It is but very vital for NP-SL to be treated fairly by repaying them monies that other entities owe them. This will indeed help the company to move from the higher height it has reached and catapult it to touch the sky. There is no other way round and taking legal steps could not be the best option for now.

50 Sierra Leonean Health Workers Depart for China

By Esther Wright

The Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone on the 4th of October  held a farewell ceremony for 50 Sierra Leonean health workers who departed for China on 7th and 11th of October to participate in a 20-day seminar on infectious disease prevention and control and a 28-day seminar on maternal and child health techniques respectively. Both seminars are fully sponsored by the Chinese government.

The ceremony was graced by Mr. Wang Xinmin, Political Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Dr. Anthony Augustine Sandi, Deputy Minister of Heath and Sanitation and Dr. Amara Jambai, Chief Medical Officer. 50 Sierra Leonean health workers and other government officials from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation participated in the event.

In his statement, Counsellor Wang Xinmin stated that Chinese government had always been dedicated to forging stronger cooperation with Sierra Leonean government to help improve the public health system, which concerns the well-being of the people in this country and also echos H.E. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s call for building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Counsellor Wang pointed out that, as the largest country in the world in terms of population, China has made tremendous achievement and gained considerable experience in improving the national public health system. The life expectancy of Chinese people has risen from just 35 years to over 77 since the People’s Republic of China was founded, owing to great efforts of China to control diseases and improve health care systems. China is more than happy to share its rich experience in public health improvement with our brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone.

While addressing the 50 beneficiaries of the training seminar, among which 46 are female health workers, Counselor Wang pointed out that on 27 September 2015, H.E. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in New York that in the coming 5 years, China would host 30,000 women from developing countries for training programs in China to support women’s development worldwide. Counselor Wang went on to say that China would continue to invite Sierra Leonean females to China for capacity building programs.

On behalf of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the Deputy Minister Dr. Anthony Sandi expressed his gratitude to the Chinese embassy for providing this capacity building opportunity in the area of public health. He reiterated that the cooperation between his ministry and the Chinese side had been very well and he looked forward to seeing both sides take it to the next level.

To the participants, Dr. Sandi said, “You all are purposefully recommended for this programme in China, and you are expected to make full use of this opportunity to build and strengthen your capacities and upon your return replicate those ideas to make them benefit more people in Sierra Leone.”

The Chief Medical Officer Dr. Amara Jambai also emphasized the importance of the seminars in strengthening the capacities of the health workers. He also requested all the participants to fully immerse themselves in the seminars and acquire knowledge so as to make greater contribution to this country in the area of public health.

In recent years, human resources development has been one of the highlights in the cooperation between China and Sierra Leone. This year, around 700 Sierra Leoneans will benefit from the training programs hosted by the Chinese government.

FIFA Fines Sierra Leone 45,700 euros

By Thaimu Thullah

In a sad news this medium came to understand  that Sierra Leone has been ordered by FIFA to play their next home match behind closed doors following disturbances at the World Cup eliminator against Liberia last month.

FIFA cited a number of incidents including “invasion of the field of play, throwing of objects, lack of order or discipline observed in or around the stadium” as they also imposed a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs (45,700 euros).

Liberia, who won the tie 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the second round of African qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, complained that their team had been attacked by Sierra Leone supporters and prevented from training.
