Choithram Memorial Hospital Wraps Up Free Successful Pediatric Surgery Camp

By Alvin Lansana Kargbo

Choithram Memorial Hospital has successfully concluded its annual free pediatric surgery camp, providing life-saving medical surgeries to children in need. The initiative, which took place from March 21 to April 4, 2025, was organized in partnership with the Bintumani Association and a team of skilled German medical specialists. During the two-week camp, 34 children underwent a total of 43 life-changing surgeries, offering hope to families who otherwise could not afford such critical medical interventions. This was disclosed during a Press Conference held at the Choithram Memorial Hospital on April 2, 2025.

The initiative addressed a wide range of conditions, including neck fistulas, cysts, soft tissue tumors, hernias, undescended testes and various congenital urogenital and gastrointestinal abnormalities.

The pediatric surgery camp was facilitated by a dedicated team of specialists from Germany, including:

– Dr. Morley Wright – Specialist Pediatrician

– Dr. Tilman Gresing – Pediatrician

– Dr. Kathrin Ruesse – Anesthetist

– Mrs. Anka Drebes – Nurse Anesthetist

– Mrs. Madeleine Martin – Project Coordinator

Dr. Morley Wright, a leading specialist in pediatric care and a key figure in the camp’s operations,  who also oversees financial aid, communication and hospital selection, highlighted the nature of cases treated during the program. “We have successfully treated children with congenital malformations of the abdominal wall, such as umbilical and epigastric conditions. Many cases involved congenital genital malformations, including hypospadias, where the urethra was incorrectly positioned, sometimes leading to fistulas. Corrective procedures were performed to ensure proper positioning and function,” he explained. Additionally, osteomyelitis cases were also addressed during the camp.

Their collaboration with Choithram Memorial Hospital ensured the provision of top-tier medical care, free of charge to the patients. Since its inception in 2010, the pediatric surgery camp has been a beacon of hope for vulnerable children in Sierra Leone.

Harish Agnani, Chief Administrator of the Choithram Group, emphasized the hospital’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian efforts. He highlighted that the initiative is fully funded and has been conducted annually with the support of international experts who volunteer their time and expertise.  According to him, the hospital provides essential facilities, including operating theaters and skilled staff, to ensure the success of the program.

For many families, the camp has been a life-changing experience. Nancy Kanu, mother of one of the beneficiaries, expressed her profound gratitude. She described how the care her child received transformed their lives, noting that all services, including food, were provided free of charge.

This year’s successful camp further demonstrates the power of collaborative humanitarian work in addressing critical healthcare needs. With continued support from the Bintumani Association, Choithram Memorial Hospital, and the dedicated team of specialists, the pediatric surgery camp is set to continue offering vital medical care to children in Sierra Leone for years to come.

The annual initiative, which aligns with the company’s core values of care, empathy, and inclusivity, is aimed at supporting local churches in their spiritual and charitable work during the holy period of Lent—a time observed by Christians through fasting, prayer, and acts of generosity.

Speaking during one of the donation ceremonies at St. Anthony Catholic Church on Syke Street, Freetown, Orange Sierra Leone’s Director of Procurement and Supply Chain, Edward Sesay, emphasized the spiritual significance of Lent. He noted that the company believes this period should also be a time when generosity and compassion are most visible.

“Lent is a time when Christians engage in deep spiritual reflection, and it is equally a time when we are all encouraged to show kindness and share with those in need,” Sesay said. “At Orange, we are proud of our tradition of religious tolerance and inclusivity. Just as we support our Muslim brothers and sisters during Ramadan, we also stand with Christian communities during Lent to ensure our impact reaches as many people as possible.”

The parish representative, Father Conteh, expressed profound appreciation to Orange Sierra Leone on behalf of the parish priest and congregants. He described the donation as timely and impactful, noting that the food items would aid in their pastoral missions and empower the church to extend charity to other members of the congregation.

“We are deeply grateful to Orange Sierra Leone for thinking of us during this sacred season,” Father Conteh said. “This gesture not only supports our religious obligations but also exemplifies the importance of generosity that Lent stands for. We pray that this spirit of giving continues to flourish in our communities.”

The donated food items were warmly received at all eight beneficiary churches, bringing smiles and relief to many congregants and reinforcing a sense of unity and compassion within the Christian community.

Key Highlights of the 2025 Lent Food Donation Drive:

China: Injecting More Certainty into the Uncertain World – Ambassador Wang Qing

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a world grappling with uncertainty, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Wang Qing, has reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to global stability and economic progress. Speaking on the heels of several high-profile events in China — including the “Two Sessions”, the China Development Forum, and the Boao Forum for Asia — Ambassador Wang underscored China’s strategic direction in both domestic and foreign policy, positioning the country as a beacon of certainty and progress.

According to Ambassador Wang, “After the Spring Festival, China’s National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference charted a clear path for development this year.” He emphasized that recent engagements, including President Xi Jinping’s meeting with representatives of the international business community, sent powerful signals about China’s intent to promote high-quality development, maintain high-level openness, and uphold multilateralism as a cornerstone of international relations.

Ambassador Wang highlighted China’s consistent role as a driver of global economic development, revealing that the country has been the largest contributor to world economic growth for 20 consecutive years, accounting for more than 30% of global growth during that period.

Despite global economic headwinds, China has set its GDP growth target at around 5% for 2025 — a target the ambassador confidently deemed achievable. “This confidence stems from China’s vast domestic market, resilient industrial base, and continuous momentum in innovation,” he said. “Moreover, our institutional strengths and reforms in opening up have created a stable environment for long-term development.”

Ambassador Wang emphasized that China’s commitment to openness remains central to its national policy. “President Xi Jinping has made it clear: China’s door will only open wider,” he stated.

This openness is evident in two key areas: institutional and unilateral liberalization. China has fully opened its manufacturing sector to foreign investment and granted zero-tariff treatment to all goods from the least developed countries with diplomatic ties to China. At the same time, the country continues to host major trade fairs like the China International Import Expo and the China International Supply Chain Expo to boost trade.

Additionally, China has eased travel restrictions by implementing visa-free policies for passport holders from 26 countries and offering unilateral visa exemptions to 38 others. “Foreign tourists now have more access than ever to explore China’s rich history, culture, and business opportunities,” Ambassador Wang noted.

As the United Nations commemorates its 80th anniversary alongside the 80th anniversary of the end of the World Anti-Fascist War, Ambassador Wang reflected on the growing global challenges — from conflicts to economic divides — and called for a renewed commitment to multilateralism.

“As a founding member of the United Nations and a permanent member of the Security Council, China takes its international responsibilities seriously,” he said. He reiterated that China supports a rules-based international system centered on the UN, guided by international law, and grounded in the principles of the UN Charter.

“Protectionism is not the answer, and tariffs only fuel division,” he warned. “China believes in shared development and is working to promote a fair, inclusive, and balanced multipolar world.”

On China’s relationship with Africa, Ambassador Wang was emphatic: “China and Africa are more than just partners — we are good friends and brothers united by a shared destiny.”

He recalled the recent Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where China unveiled a comprehensive “Ten Partnership Actions Plan” to support Africa’s modernization efforts. He assured that China would work closely with African nations, including Sierra Leone, to fully implement FOCAC outcomes.

“Together, we will walk the path of peaceful development and mutually beneficial cooperation,” he affirmed. “China-Sierra Leone relations, and broader China-Africa ties, are set to reach new heights, delivering tangible benefits to our peoples.”

Ambassador Wang’s message comes at a time when the world is navigating turbulent political and economic currents. His statement reaffirms China’s role not only as a global economic powerhouse but also as a staunch advocate of openness, cooperation, and multilateralism.

“In uncertain times,” Ambassador Wang concluded, “China stands as a steadfast force for stability, progress, and global partnership.”

U.S. Ambassador Warns Against Illegal Immigration Risks

U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan D. Hunt
U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan D. Hunt

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The United States is intensifying its crackdown on illegal immigration, with strict enforcement measures that could result in severe consequences for those who attempt to enter or remain in the country unlawfully. In an op-ed released on 3 April 2025, U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan D. Hunt ,underscored the gravity of violating immigration laws, warning that individuals who enter the United States illegally, overstay their visas or engage in fraudulent visa applications will face serious penalties, including detention, deportation and permanent bans from reentry.

He pointed out that recent border security enhancements under President Trump’s administration have led to a significant decline in illegal crossings and a sharp increase in arrests and deportations.  According to him, in February 2025 alone, illegal border crossings dropped by 94% compared to the previous year, while arrests of undocumented migrants within the U.S. surged by 627%. Ambassador Bryan Hunt made it clear that those who attempt to enter unlawfully will be apprehended and removed, with no exceptions.

He also warned against visa fraud, emphasizing that falsifying documents, lying on applications or overstaying a visa constitutes a serious crime with lasting consequences. Those caught engaging in such activities face permanent ineligibility for future U.S. visas, the Ambassador furthered.

The dangers of attempting to enter the United States illegally extend beyond legal penalties, he maintained adding that migrants often fall prey to violent criminal groups, human traffickers and cartels, facing extreme risks along the journey. He highlighted that many do not survive and those who do are often subjected to abuse and exploitation. The U.S. Government, he stated, is actively collaborating with international partners to intercept and return individuals attempting unlawful entry before they reach the border.

In addition to targeting illegal entrants, the U.S. Government is also imposing consequences on those who facilitate illegal immigration, Ambassador Bryan Hunt revealed saying Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently announced new visa restrictions for foreign officials, including immigration and customs personnel, who fail to take action against human smuggling networks. He said the policy builds on existing measures against those in the transportation and tourism industries who enable unlawful migration.

Ambassador Hunt’s message was unequivocal: the risks of illegal immigration far outweigh any perceived benefits. Those who enter illegally or remain without authorization face imprisonment, family separation and a lifetime ban from the United States. He urged those residing in the U.S. unlawfully to voluntarily return home before they are caught and penalized.

The U.S. Embassy’s stance remains firm—following legal procedures is the only viable path to entering the United States. Ignoring immigration laws not only jeopardizes individual futures but also endangers lives.

Sierra Leonean Women Detained in Oman: MRU-WAGAN Demands Urgent Action

The Mano River Union Women and Girls Advoc-Aid Network Sierra Leone (MRU-WAGAN) has on March 21, 2025 issued an urgent appeal for Government and humanitarian intervention following reports of Sierra Leonean women detained in Oman, including Margret Turay, who has been held incommunicado since January 6, 2025.

According to her brother, James Turay, all communication with Margret abruptly ceased, leaving her family in distress and uncertainty. Despite repeated inquiries, Omani authorities have provided no clear justification for her detention or details on any legal process for her release. The lack of transparency has raised serious human rights concerns, prompting MRU-WAGAN to call for immediate diplomatic and humanitarian intervention.

In a press release issued on March 21, 2025, MRU-WAGAN called on the Government of Sierra Leone, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Omani Ambassador to Sierra Leone and international humanitarian organizations to take urgent measures to address the situation. Their demands include:

  1. Diplomatic Engagement: Immediate inquiry and official clarification from Omani authorities regarding the legal status, condition and whereabouts of Margret Turay and other detained Sierra Leonean women.
  2. Human Rights Protections: Advocacy for their fair treatment in accordance with international human rights laws, including the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
  3. Safe and Immediate Release: A strong appeal to the Government of Oman to facilitate the release and repatriation of the detained women without further delay, ensuring their safe return to Sierra Leone.
  4. Preventive Measures: Implementation of stricter labor migration policies, enhanced embassy support and emergency response mechanisms to protect Sierra Leonean women seeking employment abroad from similar distressing situations.

MRU-WAGAN has also called upon ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN) and international human rights organizations to intervene and hold the Government of Oman accountable for any violations of migrant workers’ rights. The organization stressed the need for global solidarity in ensuring justice and protection for vulnerable migrant workers.

MRU-WAGAN has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Margret Turay’s family and all affected women, pledging to continue advocating for the rights, dignity and safety of Sierra Leonean women and girls worldwide.

“We urge the Government of Sierra Leone and the international community to act swiftly in securing justice and the safe return of our detained sisters,” the organization stated in its appeal.

The organization is urging both the Government of Sierra Leone and the international community to act swiftly in ensuring justice and the safe return of all detained Sierra Leonean women.

“I was honored to deliver a statement at the turning-of-the-sod ceremony for the construction of a dedicated building for the Postgraduate Colleges of Health Specialties, following its inauguration by President Julius Maada Bio in 2021. We have taken a crucial step in realizing a key pillar of the Big Five Agenda—Human Capital Development. This new facility demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector. Linking medical training and research to quality care is essential for improving health outcomes,” Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh noted.

Navigating the Economic Tightrope: President Bio’s Austerity Measures in Sierra Leone

President Julius Maada Bio
President Julius Maada Bio

By Jacob Prince Macauley

Confronted with a challenging economic inheritance, President Julius Maada Bio’s administration has embarked on a rigorous fiscal consolidation path, implementing measures widely regarded as austerity. These policies, aimed at stabilizing the nation’s finances and fostering long-term economic resilience, have sparked considerable debate and scrutiny within Sierra Leone.

Upon assuming office, President Bio inherited a nation burdened with a significant debt load. The debt-to-GDP ratio stood at approximately 95.8% in 2022, raising serious concerns about fiscal sustainability and limiting the Government’s capacity for critical investments. Recent data from the African Development Bank indicates a decline to around 90.5% in 2023, with projections from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) forecasting further improvement to 80.0% by the end of 2023 and a projected 69.7% in 2024. The administration argues that sustained fiscal consolidation is essential to securing long-term stability and reducing the ratio to more manageable levels.

In response to these challenges, the Government has prioritized domestic revenue mobilization through several key measures. The continued rollout and enforcement of the Electronic Fiscal Device (EFD) system across various sectors aim to enhance Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection, curbing tax evasion. Additionally, structural reforms within the National Revenue Authority (NRA) have focused on strengthening its Large Taxpayers Department and enhancing its capacity for tax audits, particularly in high-value sectors such as mining and telecommunications.

Efforts to formalize segments of the informal economy have also been intensified through business registration drives and awareness campaigns, broadening the tax base. While the tax-to-GDP ratio stood at 11.4% in 2022—down from 13.3% in 2021—these ongoing efforts aim to increase this figure, bringing it closer to the African average of 16.0% in 2022. The Government has also emphasized non-tax revenue collection, which constituted a notable 9.2% of GDP in 2022, with grants playing a major role.

On the expenditure side, the Government has introduced stringent cost-saving measures. The enhancement of the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) seeks to improve budget execution and expenditure control across Government entities. Additionally, biometric verification of public sector employees has helped identify and eliminate ghost workers, resulting in significant savings on the national wage bill.

Stricter guidelines and approval processes have been implemented for Government travel, workshops and operational expenses. Capital expenditures have been strategically prioritized, focusing on projects essential for economic growth and human capital development.

In addressing public debt, the Government has pursued restructuring initiatives with both domestic and international creditors. This has included negotiations for extended repayment periods and potentially more favorable interest rates to ease the immediate debt service burden. A recent agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a new Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement further underscores the need for significant fiscal adjustment and debt management.

While these austerity measures are intended to stabilize Sierra Leone’s economy, they have raised concerns regarding their impact on social programs. The Bio administration has consistently prioritized the Free Quality Education Programme, but ensuring adequate funding for healthcare and social welfare remains challenging amid fiscal constraints. Civil society organizations and opposition groups continue to call for greater transparency in budget allocations and impact assessments to safeguard essential social services.

As the Government enforces austerity, scrutiny has increased regarding the lifestyle of Government officials, particularly Ministers. While ordinary citizens endure economic hardship, concerns persist about whether the Government’s fiscal prudence is reflected in the behavior and expenditures of those in power.

Reports, often amplified on social media and in local news outlets, highlight instances of lavish spending, including luxury vehicles, expensive international travel beyond essential state business and extravagant Government functions. These observations have fueled skepticism, raising questions about the sincerity of the Government’s austerity measures and potentially undermining public trust.

The perceived disparity between the Government’s call for fiscal discipline and the lifestyle of some of its officials poses a significant challenge. If citizens believe they are shouldering the burden of economic hardship while leaders continue with business as usual, there is a risk of decreased public cooperation in revenue collection efforts and growing social discontent.

To address this issue, the Government must demonstrate a stronger commitment to fiscal discipline. This could involve implementing stricter guidelines on official travel and expenditure, ensuring greater transparency regarding public officials’ financial assets and holding accountable those who misuse public funds. Leading by example will be essential in reinforcing the credibility of the austerity program.

President Bio’s administration is navigating a complex economic landscape, emphasizing fiscal consolidation as a path to stability. The reported decline in the debt-to-GDP ratio and efforts to enhance revenue collection and control expenditure are steps in the right direction. However, the long-term success of these austerity measures depends not only on their effective implementation but also on the Government’s ability to foster transparency, protect vital social investments and ensure that sacrifices are equitably shared across all levels of society.

As Sierra Leone moves forward, the coming years will be crucial in determining the tangible impact of these policies on economic recovery and the livelihoods of its citizens. The success of the austerity measures will ultimately hinge on whether the Government can balance fiscal responsibility with social equity, ensuring a more sustainable and inclusive economic future for all.

Indian Community in Freetown Celebrates Cheti Chand with Grand Festivities

Hindu New Year

By Foday Moriba Conteh

The Indian Community in Freetown on Sunday 30th March, 2025 marked the Cheti Chand festival with vibrant celebrations, commemorating the Hindu New Year and the birth anniversary of Shri Jhulelal, the revered deity of Sindhi Hindus. The event featured a colorful procession from Ishwari Supermarket on Wilkinson Road to the Indian Temple, where prayers and cultural performances took place.

Devotees, dressed in festive attire, filled the streets with joyous singing, dancing and traditional Sindhi hymns as they paid homage to Shri Jhulelal. The temple became a hub of spiritual energy as renowned artists from India led soul-stirring prayers and devotional songs, fostering a sense of unity and devotion among attendees.

Speaking at the event, Niharika Agnani, a representative of the Indian community, emphasized the cultural and spiritual significance of the festival, describing it as a moment of faith, unity and renewal for Sindhi Hindus worldwide.

According to Niharika Agnani, Cheti Chand commemorates the birth of Shri Jhulelal, the Ishtdev (patron deity) of Sindhi Hindus and an incarnation of Varuna Dev, the Hindu God of Water. She explained that in the 10th century, Sindhi Hindus endured oppression under a tyrannical ruler, prompting them to undertake 40 days of fasting and prayers for divine intervention.

“In response to their prayers, a divine voice promised the birth of a savior,” she stated. The child, Uderolal, later known as Jhulelal, performed miracles and ultimately persuaded the ruler to respect religious freedom, securing the survival of Sindhi faith and traditions.

Niharika Agnani noted that Cheti Chand falls on the first day of the Chaitra month (March-April) in the Hindu lunar calendar and coincides with other Hindu New Year celebrations such as Gudi Padwa (Maharashtra) and Ugadi (South India). She described the festival as “a time of renewal, prosperity and spiritual awakening, offering devotees a fresh start for the year ahead.”

Highlighting the deep connection between Shri Jhulelal and water, she explained that water plays a sacred role in Sindhi culture. “Devotees offer prayers to water bodies, seeking divine blessings, protection and abundance,” she said, adding that water symbolizes purity, sustenance and life in Sindhi traditions.

Describing the celebratory activities, Niharika Agnani stated that the festival features grand processions with Jhulelal’s idol, accompanied by traditional music, devotional songs and dancing. “We sing and dance as a form of spiritual expression, paying tribute to Jhulelal’s legacy,” she said.

She further explained that special prayer sessions and hymns are held at temples, creating an atmosphere of spiritual devotion. “It is a time for community feasts and acts of charity, reinforcing values of generosity and unity within the Sindhi community,” she noted also highlighting the ritual of lighting lamps (diyas) and offering prayers near rivers and seas, symbolizing gratitude to the Water God.

Niharika Agnani stressed that Cheti Chand is more than just a religious observance it is a celebration of Sindhi cultural heritage and resilience. “This festival reminds us of our faith, unity and strength as a people,” she said. She described Cheti Chand as “a moment to seek peace, prosperity and blessings for the year ahead, ensuring that our traditions remain alive for future generations.”

Speaking at the Nurul Haqq Mosque in Goderich, Freetown, during one of the donation ceremonies, Mohamed Santos Bangura, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Officer at Orange Sierra Leone, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to supporting religious institutions during their respective holy periods. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the company’s core values of care, responsibility and boldness.

“Orange Sierra Leone has consistently extended goodwill gestures to both mosques and churches during Ramadan and Lent. This year’s selection process was open and fair, ensuring that different communities benefit. However, beneficiaries for this year’s donation may not necessarily be selected next year, as our goal is to impact as many communities as possible,” Mohamed Santos Bangura stated.

At the Ilmo Zikre Mosque in Hill Station, the Imam, Alhaji Chernor Mohamed Jalloh, expressed gratitude on behalf of the congregation. He commended Orange Sierra Leone for its unwavering support over the past decade, noting that the company has been a consistent partner in supporting religious institutions.

“As the host mosque of Orange Sierra Leone, we have always maintained a strong and cordial relationship with the company. This generous donation comes at a crucial time, especially as worshippers observe the last ten days of Ramadan, which require long hours of prayers and reflection,” Alhaji Chernor Mohamed Jalloh remarked. He also invoked a supplication from the Holy Quran, highlighting the virtues of giving and community support.

Orange Sierra Leone’s Ramadan donations are part of an annual tradition that extends to both Muslim and Christian communities during Ramadan and Lent. The initiative reflects the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and community support.

Key highlights of the donation program include:

• A commitment to donating food items to selected mosques and churches each year.
• An open, competitive and fair selection process to ensure inclusivity.
