She said conflicting reports were given as to the cause of death some stating that she died of throat cancer. She, however, pointed out that her death was attributed to physical abuse inflicted on her by her husband who was also her musical manager. According to her, many were wondering why the late singer suffered emotional and psychological abuse for so long without voicing it out. She underscored that there are some deaths that are preventable maintaining that it is disturbing to think of a woman in her prime who had her life cut so short.

The moderator asked the question of what are we doing to bring the boys onboard with the objective of breaking the cycle of violence furthering that women are not the weaker sex, they make the bulk of the population and can do commendable things.

According to her, when power lies in the hands of the majority a revolution is possible. She expressed gratitude for the enactment of the GEWE Act adding that organizations like the Ruach Restoration Foundation for Women is helping the Government to address issues related to Gender and Sexual Based Violence. “They want to bring hope and empower women in order to create a new Sierra Leone,” she informed the audience.

She revealed how the Foundation has been gifted with three town plots of land at Peninsular Area further intimating how the Centre will be able to house disadvantaged/abandoned girls, women who are homeless, those who have suffered from domestic violence and even prostitutes who want to leave the streets but do not have the means to get a place to stay.

Chairperson of Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equal Rights and Social Justice (LAWYERS), Fatmata Forster, in her statement gave some gloomy statistics of the status of women in Sierra Leone, one of which according to UNFPA states that 62% of women in Sierra Leone have experienced violence. She pointed out that because of the discouraging statistics that is all the more reason why the fight for women empowerment is necessary.

According to her, twenty years ago LAWYERS was formed to provide pro bono legal representation for disadvantaged women and girls. She said the aims and objectives of the organization speak to the services they offer adding that she is delighted to see more organizations come onboard as they LAWYERS have their own limitations stressing that other organizations could take off from what they could not do. Fatmata stressed that an organization like the Restoration Foundation for Women is being launched.

She made a passionate appeal for support to be given to the organization, especially financial support in order for it to undertake its building project.

Fatmata ended up wishing members of the organization all the best assuring them that LAWYERS will always respond at their beacon calls.

The Program Manager for Rainbo Initiative, Anthony Sam, intimated that they do operate in six districts disclosing that recently they relocated to their new office on 4 Williams Drive where they have opened a Satellite Centre.

NP-SL is Keen in Optimizing Customer Care & Satisfaction

National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL-Ltd)

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

There is no doubt that the NP-SL Ltd is highly known for taking customer care to the highest pedestal in the country. Indeed such is indisputable when cognizance is taken of how Management is very keen in optimizing customer satisfaction in its service delivery on different fronts.

Members of staff of the company are very mindful of the fact that it is the customer that comes first and therefore needs the utmost attention always ensuring that transactions are conducted under a congenial atmosphere that result into a win-win situation. For this brilliant and managerial initiative the company has been making positive headways positioning to stand tall among other business entities in this part of the world.

With a capable and result-oriented ‘Team NP’, working collaboratively and assiduously, where even the cleaner is regarded as highly relevant there is bound to be positive outcomes and the company has mastered this by ensuring that synergy is enhanced.
One admirable quality that NP-SL Ltd possesses is working tirelessly and effectively using its contacts with oil producing countries in order to ensure that there is timely purchase and delivery of petroleum products to avoid shortages.

It goes without saying that fuel, for example, could be a political commodity in the sense that fluctuation in its price would make a Government likeable or unpopular. When the price goes up then people blame the Government for that but if it goes down it is kudos for the political administration.

Its timely importation of petroleum products has earned NP high commendations from various quarters simply because it helps to cushion unrest and other forms of disadvantageous effects one of which is increase in transport fares, increase in the prices of certain commodities. The pro-activeness of the company invariably has a direct impact on poverty reduction in variable ways.

Some who may not be aware of the fact that NP-SL Ltd is wholly owned by Sierra Leoneans vis-à-vis the visibility of the company and how it is remarkably striving could find it hard to believe that it a truly indigenous company.

However, that remains the plain truth when it is learnt that it was Sierra Leonean 35 workers formerly working for British Petroleum (BP) who pulled together their end of service benefits to purchase shares which were used to establish NP, which today is a success story of an indigenous company, having branches in various parts of the country and in other four West African countries namely Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast and The Gambia. The company’s operations right across the spectrum is contributing towards revenue generation and job creation for many.

With gas as one its marketable products it was thought wise to be producing gas cookers, popularly known as NP Gas, which could be access at their different filling stations. According to investigation conducted NP Gas is cooking-friendly, safe and long lasting. It is going at an affordable price and many are going for it.

When reference is made to Local Content then NP-SL Ltd stands tall within that realm as nearly all its members of staff are Sierra Leoneans thereby making use of local talents everywhere they are operating. The Local Content Policy is indeed an engine of growth and NP is making full use of it.
Without any iota of doubt NP-SL Ltd is growing taller and taller as time goes by.

“Without gender equity, development is stifled,” the First Lady emphasized while urging the boys to focus on their education and support their female counterparts.

Her Excellency spoke of her passion towards the welfare of the boys, while noting that her focus on the girls over the years is to ensure proper grooming for the most vulnerable groups.

She used the platform as an opportunity to thank President Bio for the free quality education initiative with special reference to the radical inclusion policy which has ensured vulnerable groups including girls stay in school against all odds.

Gento Celebrates Great Women Breaking Concrete Ceilings

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The Gento Group of Companies was one of the private entities that  joined other entities in the country, on the 8th March, 2023, to commemorate International Women’s Day on the theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”.

It was a special day set aside to reflect on how far the issue of gender parity in the country has been addressed and to celebrate women that have accomplished remarkable feats as well as the commendable inroads they have made which hitherto were taught to be the exclusive preserve of only men.

Chief Executive Officer of Gento Group of Companies, Mohamed Gento Kamara, warmly wished the women of this country a happy and impactful International Women’s Day celebrations, especially female employees of the company. He encouraged them to be innovative, live their dreams, pursue their ambitions as well as candidly assured them of his unflinching support in helping them realize their full potentials and pursuits in life.

It is worthy to note that the company’s CEO, who doubles as the aspiring SLPP sole Mayoral Candidate for the Freetown Municipality, is a fervent believer in gender equality more especially as he firmly considers it is an integral part of the company’s policy that should be actualized and out of the fact that he has seen it practically working well at first hand.

In how gender equality obtains at the Gento Group, one outstanding and vivid outcome of the demonstration of making judicious use of the opportunity and space that the company offers is a female employee of the company that goes by the name of Admire. This remarkable lady was initially employed as a Cook by the Gento Group but with her daily interactions at the quarry site, she developed a strong interest to operate one of the big machines.

For someone who had no education, no prior machine or engineering knowledge, this must have been a joke.

Regardless, she was persistent and pleaded with the CEO to give her a chance. A chance she did get and she made the very best of it leaving only amazement in her trail; a cook who became an Excavator Machine Operator.

She always exudes confidence at the wheel and mastery of its operations as she gently manoeuvres a caterpillar from a parking lot towards the quarry for onward loading of a truck parked nearby, being part of her daily routine.

Admire has been able to use the money she earns from this job in training her child up to University level! She expressed her thanks to God and Gento whom she has come to identify as her benefactor.

CEO of the company, Mohamed Gento Kamara, during a snap interaction, intimated this medium that on the occasion of International Women’s Day, he wants to use it as an opportunity to celebrate “Admire” and other great women out there doing their little bits at breaking concrete ceilings.

A senior employee of the company frankly averred that on International Women’s Day women of such stature and determination are to be celebrated because they are the type of examples that cause others to look inwards, realize their potentials and act accordingly.

As for Admire, she firmly believed that despite the fact that she is a female, however, she could do better what a man can do, which peculiarly in this case was to operate an excavator machine not resting on her oars as the company’s cook.

She mentioned how she approached the CEO and determinedly informed him about her intention to which he readily and gladly offered her the opportunity and made good use of it to become an Operator, shifting away from being a cook.

Admire told this medium that she is encouraging other young women out there, who consider themselves as drop outs in society, not to give up in life but to keep pushing on until they achieve their dreams.

She expressed gratitude to the CEO of the company for believing in her and giving her the opportunity to realize her ambition.

Another female employee of the company that is an epitome of gender parity in the company, Adama Kposowa, narrated how she joined the company as a young graduate saying through hard work she imbibed useful skills that have transformed to become a very good engineer and always successful in carryout certain tasks for the company.

She emphasized the fact that the opportunity that she was offered was unfettered and she harnessed it and made proper  use of it also profusely commending the CEO for always offering equal opportunities to both female and male employee of the company as well as tapping into their potentials. She advised young girls to learn useful skills that could help them earn incomes and take care of responsibilities. Adama also extended thanks to the CEO for all the support he has been rendering to all the employees of the company.

Other female employees expressed similar sentiments.

It must be underscored that the stories of these women coming out from the Gento Group is one that strongly supports the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality” as all the women are engaged  in the field of Civil Engineering which was once considered to be a male dominated profession.
