NP-SL Sheds a Ray of Hope for Ambitious & Potential Investors

National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL-Ltd)

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a very positive way, NP-SL sheds a ray of hope for individuals who are contemplating and really on the verge of establishing business enterprises. The reputable importing and marketing petroleum business entity speaks volumes of how any ambitious group of Sierra Leoneans, with good initiatives and set objectives, could make major achievements when they come together and invest solidly.

Today, NP-SL is the leading petroleum marketing company in the West African sub-region simply because 35 Sierra Leonean nationals were shrewd enough to plough their end of service benefits into the setting up of the company.

Such a positive move or venture, if carefully emulated by forward-looking and ambitious individuals who are desirous of establishing successful enterprises could lead to the realization of fruitful dividends and deepen could best be driven by the private sector.

Though NP-SL Ltd is an indigenously owned company, however, its shareholders and Management are not afraid to take risks by venturing into various parts of the country. NP-SL Ltd believes in breaking new grounds and this has been the driving force behind its expansionist drive.

By taking risks new experiences are learnt as to how certain things better which in turn helps greatly in ensuring that effectiveness in service delivery is highly enhanced.

To make the purchase of fuel very simple NP-SL Ltd introduced the NP Smart Card, which enables organizations and individuals to purchase fuel at ease without using physical cash. By introducing this latest technology, it avails its customers the convenience of conducting smooth transactions at Filling Stations as long there is credit in the NP Smart Cards.

Making use of latest technological discoveries to enhance business transactions is now in vogue and for business entities that are nascent it is advisable , where possible, to make use of latest innovations to ensure growth.

If there is any company that strictly adheres to the Local Content Policy that entity is indisputably NP-SL. The Management always ensures, as a matter of policy, to give employment to only Sierra Leonean nationals. It is the same in all the other countries where the company operates.

Adherence to Local Content helps to reduce cost, instill a sense of ownership and improves competencies. Such could be well harnessed for the successful growth and expansion of any business entity.

Still within the realm of local content, the company manufactures a cooking device known as NP Gas which comes in different sizes. It has been proven to be a very good device which can be refilled with gas that could be secured at any NP Filling Station.

It has been established that using charcoal and wood for cooking purposes poses health hazards and depletion of our forests. Against such a backdrop many have commended the company for making it possible to get access to NP gas cookers, which are indeed safe and friendly for domestic use. Gas is as well available at the company’s filling stations which individuals can purchase at affordable prices.

Individuals eager to establish thriving business entities could really draw inspiration from NP-SL and if concrete efforts are made to translate them to the letter then dreams could crystallize to tangible realities on the ground.

The Dawn of a New Chapter & Mapping out a High-Level China-Africa Community

China-Africa friendship

By Wang Qing, Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone

From January 9 to 16,2023, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang visited Ethiopia, Gabon, Angola, Benin, Egypt, the African Union Headquarters and the League of Arab States Headquarters upon invitation. This is his first overseas trip as the Chinese Foreign Minister. It is also the 33rd consecutive year that the Chinese Foreign Minister visits Africa on the first overseas trip of the new year.

During the visit, Foreign Minister Qin Gang made a four-point proposal on the development of China-Africa Relations: First, intensify in-person interactions and connectivity of ideas between China and Africa. Second, further deepen friendly relations between China and the AU. Third, do more to upgrade and elevate China-Africa cooperation. Fourth, stand firm in defending the unity and cooperation of developing countries. Foreign Minister Qin Gang also reiterated that strengthening solidarity and cooperation with African countries will always be a diplomatic priority for China. No matter how the international environment changes, China and Africa will always be a community with a shared future.

This visit clearly stated that carrying forward and advancing the China-Africa friendship has been a noble tradition and a defining feature of China’s diplomacy. Even mountains and seas cannot distance people with common aspirations. China is the largest developing country in the world, and Africa is the continent with the largest number of developing countries. Shared past experiences and similar aims and goals have brought China and Africa close together. Since the 1950s and the 1960s, the first generation of leaders of China including Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai joined hands with their African counterparts to usher in a new era of China-Africa friendship. From then on, the Chinese and African people have supported and cooperated with each other and forged a brotherly bond sharing weal and woe. The Chinese people will not forget that it was the African brothers who “carried” the New China into the United Nations. African people will also never forget that China extended a helping hand to support Africa’s development in its own very difficult times. The Chinese and African people share good feelings with each other, which have become the unbreakable foundation of China-Africa friendship.

This visit vividly demonstrated China’s firm will and practical actions to build a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future. Entering the new era, President Xi Jinping put forward the principles of China’s Africa policy – sincerity, real results, amity and good faith, and pursuing the greater good and shared interests, and advocated building a closer China-Africa community with a shared future, which has been unanimously endorsed by African leaders and has pointed out the way forward and provided a fundamental guideline for China-Africa cooperation in the new era. Under the joint leadership and impetus of the Chinese and African leaders, China-Africa cooperation has continued to make new progress and reached unprecedented heights. The “Ten Major Plans”, “Eight Major Initiatives” and “Nine Programs” proposed on the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) are progressing smoothly. China has been Africa’s largest trading partner for 13 consecutive years, and the trade volume between China and Africa is expected to exceed $260 billion. During his visit to Africa, Foreign Minister Qin Gang attended the completion ceremony of the headquarter of the African Center for Disease Control, adding a new landmark project to China-Africa cooperation. At present, 52 African countries and the African Union Commission have signed Belt and Road Initiative Cooperation Documents with China, and cooperation projects on roads, electricity, communications and ports have spread across Africa, enhancing Africa’s capacity for autonomous and sustainable development. China will continue to respect the will of the African people, and bring tangible benefit to the African people under the actual situation to achieve better common development.

China and Sierra Leone are time-bonded friends. During the past 52 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China-Sierra Leone relations have developed smoothly and become a model of China-Africa friendship and cooperation. In recent years, under the strategic leadership of the two Heads of State, political trust between China and Sierra Leone has continued to grow, practical cooperation has been steadily promoted, international collaboration has become closer, and solidarity in the fight against COVID-19 has been effective, giving new energy to the traditional friendship between the two countries. Although I have only been in office for a short time, I can already feel the fruitfulness of the practical cooperation between the two countries. On the second day after I presented my credentials, I attended the handover ceremony of the China-aided Foreign Service Academy, where President Bio said “thank you” in Chinese, drawing a warm response. I have visited Youyi Building a number of times. It is one of the landmarks of China-Sierra Leone friendship. Chinese Military Medical Expert Group, China CDC Expert Team and Chinese Medical Team in Sierra Leone fought with the Sierra Leonean people against Ebola and COVID-19, vividly illustrating the China-Africa friendship of mutual help and common destiny. The Chinese language courses offered by the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone are attracting more and more people and have become a bridge between the two countries to strengthen people-to-people exchange.

China-Sierra Leone relations are facing new opportunities for development in the new era. As the new Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, I will work with my colleagues and the Sierra Leonean friends to implement the important consensus reached by the two Heads of State to enhance the relations between our two countries, deepen political mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, promote the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a new level, and jointly build the high-level China-Africa community with a shared future in the New Era.

Remove term: National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NC3) National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NC3)

During the opening of a 4-day training of Judges and Prosecutors at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown, organized by the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NC3), in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crimes alongside United States Embassy, the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Solomon Jamiru Esq re-emphasized the need for the successful implementation of the Cybersecurity and Crime Act 2021 and called for a coordinated and determined effort towards curbing Cyber Crime in Sierra Leone.

Solomon Jamiru Esq. lauded the idea of training prosecutors in Sierra Leone on Cybercrimes saying that, it is imperative to understand the cyber legislation for its smooth implementation. He added that the fine collaboration between NC3 and UNODC is already crystallizing into very concrete steps.

“The Ministry of Information and Communications remains firmly committed to mid-wife President Julius Maada Bio’s bold and transformative vision for digital connectivity. By 2018, a little over 300,000 of the population had access to internet. Today, that number has risen exponentially to around 2,600,000 Sierra Leoneans,” Solomon Jamiru said.

He added that President Bio considers digital connectivity as an imperative to the growth of the nation’s economy and businesses, an improved governance architecture, the provision of effective and efficient social services, and also as a human right to be enjoyed by all.

The Deputy Minister concluded by saying that the cost of cyber crimes is massive, costing the global economy and Africa about USD600 Billion and USD4 Billion annually, and therefore, he is urging law enforcement agents and quintessential legal professionals to take full advantage of the training, which he referred to as a major step to building the capacity of investigators and prosecutors.

In her address, the National Coordinator of NC3, Mariama Yormah, said the Cybersecurity and Crime Act, which was enacted in 2021 to combat cybercrime, protect Government’s Critical information infrastructure and provide a safer cyber space, would help all citizens to thrive on cyberspace and enjoy the opportunity without being harassed or bullied.

“The centre is mandated to handle all cybersecurity-related issues, including supporting the Judiciary and law enforcement agencies in discharging their functions concerning cybercrimes in Sierra Leone, especially as it is a reasonably new phenomenon in the country,” Mrs. Yormah emphasized.

She added that the training will build the capacity of Prosecutors as most are unfamiliar with the provisions and the technicalities necessary to build their cases and prosecute them.

“This training session with the UNODC will better capacitate them with technical and personal attribution, identification and seizure of digital evidence, differentiation between cyber-enabled and cyber-dependent crimes, digital forensics, hashing encryption and evaluating the authenticity and reliability of digital evidence,” she explained.

The Project Coordinator of the West African region office, United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime, Kamal Toure, spoke on the importance of combating cyber crimes in the region, saying that the UNODC hopes to enhance the capacity of West African countries to prevent and respond to cyber crime in a holistic and sustainable manner.

Representatives of the Chief Justice and the Inspector General of Police, both expressed similar sentiments about the training in their short statements and reiterated the importance of fighting cyber crimes with the right tools and capacity.

The training is expected to run for four days and ends on the 19th January 2022.

SV Electricals

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

When mentioning top notch business entities in Sierra Leone that are marketing electrical goods or appliances it will be a major failure in not identifying SV Electricals, a business entity that is situated on Siaka Stevens Street, in the West End of Freetown, more especially as it is one of the foremost entities that are dealing in electrical goods.

Being the authorized agent and dealer for notable manufacturing companies of electrical products, all having warranty for a specific period of time, the business enterprise is on record for marketing qualitative and durable electrical goods that can stand the test of time ensuring that maintenance of any default product is undertaken be recommended professionals.

Management of the company is very mindful of the fact that members of the public are always desirous of having the latest household appliances which is why it has been making the conscious efforts to ensure that all the goods that it is marketing are modern, sophisticated products that are driven by the latest technological innovations.

From what this medium learnt, Management of SV Electricals has a good working relationship with its employees out of the conviction that their inputs are very important to the continued and successful expansion and operations of the business venture.

Based on investigations conducted, employees are treated with the respect they deserve and there has never been any major issue bordering on any form ill treatment unless the intermittent misunderstandings that crop up from time to time which are seldom and understandably  as humans are inevitable.

According to the Managing Director of SV Electricals, Suresh Vatnani, the entity has been in operation for a considerable period of time now in the country. He disclosed that in as much as they aim to maximize profits, however, they are passionate about availing members of the public high qualitative products maintaining that most of the appliances that they import and market are produced by renowned companies overseas.

Suresh lamented that of late business has not been brisk maintaining that with the depreciation of the Leone to the Dollar it has been very challenging to conduct business at ease. He also mentioned how residents within the area they operate sometimes make unrealistic demands and when those are not honoured they then frame and make baseless allegations with the misguided idea that by doing so they will succeed in undermining the entity further underscoring that they tactfully deal with such unwarranted advances.

The business entity falls among Large Taxpayers that are paying taxes to the National Revenue Authority and by doing so promptly it is somehow contributing to national development by honouring an important statutory obligation which somehow is helping the Government to fund certain development projects that are impacting lives.

Treating their customers with dignity has made SV Electricals very endearing to many coupled with the fact that the magnanimity that Management shows by giving discounts to loyal customers or those buying large quantities has been widely commended as exceptional .

For individuals who are indecisive not knowing where to secure high tech, sophisticated and guaranteed electrical goods or appliances then the solution could be found at SV Electricals where the latest Hi Tech products may be accessed and for sure there will be no regrets in doing so.

New Finance Minister Takes Office

Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura,

President Dr Julius Maada Bio, on the 16th January, 2023 received the new Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, after his oath-taking and brief swearing-in ceremony in fulfillment of the constitutional requirement for such public officials.

“You are no stranger to the challenges we face as a country. But I believe that you have a team that will take you through this successfully. The world is going through a challenging time, and we are part of the world. I do appreciate that. But I also appreciate the fact that we have to find solutions for our own peculiar economic challenges.

“We have registered quite a lot on so many points, but we will continue to be encumbered by the economic crunch, be it fiscal or monetary, which we have to accept,” the President admonished.

He noted that the country is facing a difficult situation, adding that it would take collective efforts to manage the economy and be able to get back on the right track.

“Under the circumstances, we have done extremely well. But we have to do more on the economic front. However, I take solace in the fact that you have what it takes in terms of technical know-how and the team”.

“I also ask your team to give you their fullest support, and you can be rest assured that you have my full support,” the President said.

He emphasized that as a nation, we might not succeed unless we had a strong economy, which is a must, stressing further that a weak economy is not in the best interest of the State.

“But we can fix it and move on. That is the task that has fallen squarely on your shoulders. I just want you to know that you are not alone in this fight and that we will all support you. I am sure that, with the support that you have, if you can earnestly pursue it, you can traverse this successfully. That is the goal,” he said, adding that the Minister had a competent big team that only needed to be put to the task so that he could deliver as the head.

In his response, Fantamadi Bangura, thanked President Bio for his model of leadership, saying, “The trust and confidence you have reposed in me has prepared me for this enviable position and grateful for the honour it brings to my family”.

He described his appointment as a decision taken at a crucial time in the country’s turbulent journey and five months before elections when President Bio would be seeking a fresh mandate as leader of the country.

“Your Excellency, barely four and a half years into the administration, you delivered very solid accomplishments as promised to the people of this country in the New Direction Manifesto. Under very tenuous circumstances, both globally and also within Sierra Leone, these challenges still continue, and they are actually affecting our country and our society in different ways.”

“However, we are very much aware of your vision for Sierra Leone, one that is focused on ensuring that we deliver economic sovereignty for this country. You have always got us to appreciate, and we must always utilize all our resources, both human and God-given, to ensure that we explore their potential to deliver on the aspirations of the State,” he said.

“I want to assure you that we will work with the team that we have at the economic management level, but also across Government, the cabinet, and different organs of Government, to ensure that we are able to earnestly engage all our partners and bring credibility to all the programmes that we have defined in the State, be it in the medium-term strategy but also on the budgetary programmes and all the other advisories,” he assured.

The Minister assured the President that, “I will render this service with probity. I also want to count on your full support, His Excellency, to deliver on your expectations. Once more, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve at the highest level in this country, under your leadership”.
