Africell Launches “Klin Energy” Initiative

By Abubakarr Harding

In a bid to reduce carbon emission and mitigate climate change in the country, Africell Sierra Leone has on Wednesday, 4th January 2023 launched the “Klin Energy Initiative” during a well-attended ceremony held at Africell’s Headquarters on Wilberforce in Freetown.

Speaking on the significance of the scheme, the Managing Director of Africell Sierra Leone, Shadi Gerjawi, stated that they have decided to name the initiative “Klin Energy” because climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the planet today, and they need to actively look for solutions that will help preserve the planet not only for this generation but for the future ones adding that whilst such is a collective responsibility, they have taken the lead to be the first to invest and implement renewable energy solutions in their operations maintaining that such will effectively mean that Africell will progressively transitioning into a cleaner, more sustainable energy entity.

He continued that the solar initiative is about more than just saving money as it is also about making a commitment to complement and achieve one of UNDP’s Sustainable Development Goals -affordable and clean energy, furthering that UNDP has championed initiatives such as theirs and together they will also be looking at energy-sharing solutions as part of “Klin Energy”.

Shadi Gerjawi concluded by stating that they understand that transitioning to clean energy will not be easy, and it will require the efforts of businesses, Governments and individuals at home and around the world but said they are confident that by working together they can create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for all.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swarray, applauded Africell for such an initiative stating that there was need for transformation, one driven by communities at the fore front, enterprises and organizations that serve and understand them affirming  that  innovators have the skills and tools to push things forward.

“For renewable energy technology to be available to all it will be essential to remove roadblocks to knowledge sharing and technological transfer, including intellectual property rights barriers,” he suggested.

He continued by stating that such will help them reduce their reliance on fuel, diesel use; expand telecom infrastructure to off-grid areas; and reduce carbon emissions. The Minister revealed that after the financing agreement in July 2022 with the World Bank, they on the 13th December 2022 they as a Ministry got approval for a $50M IDA grant to implement a five year Sierra Leone Digital Transformation Project.

He ended by stating that the project will also support EPA to develop an e-Waste management policy and strategy to help reduce carbon foot print in the environment.

The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki- Swayerr highlighted that the sustainable development goals are the UN’s blue print for a more sustainable future for all.

She went on to state that clean energy provides a variety of environmental and economic benefits, including a reduction in air pollution.

“A diverse clean energy supply also reduces the dependence on imported fuel and the associated financial and environmental costs such incurs,” she added.

Launching the clean energy initiative, Africell Group Chairman, Ziad Dalloul stated that the initiative include a solar farm and a fleet of innovative electric tricycles, adding that Africell’s goal is to be more sustainable.

He expressed the view that the success of such initiatives will hopefully inspire other organizations and communities in Sierra Leone to move to cleaner energy.

He concluded by stating that solar power has huge potential in Africa, adding that Sierra Leone can be a leader in harnessing the sun to drive economic progress and improve the lives of everyone in the country.

President Bio Inspires Sogbini Chiefdom Newly Crowned Paramount Chief

Paramount Chief

By Millicent Mannah

President Dr Julius Maada Bio has on the 2nd January, 2023 called on the newly crowned Paramount Chief of Sogbini Chiefdom to lead by example for the social progress of his society, saying that society must never allow their authority to dwindle.

He told the coronation ceremony of P.C. Prince Lansana Wonnie Bio V at the Tihun town field in the Bonthe District, “As a paramount chief, you should always advocate for the development of your people. You should provide quality leadership that will create a positive impact on the people”.

The President also recalled that before his Government came to power in 2018, the power, respect and authority of Paramount Chiefs were declining, noting that they had gradually reversed the seemingly waning powers of the traditional leaders.

His Government, he said, is doing its best to support all Paramount Chiefs across the country, while also urging them to support Government’s activities in their chiefdoms.

“On behalf of my family, I thank the people who voted for the newly crowned Paramount Chief of Sogbini Chiefdom,” he said and further expressed his gratitude to his people.

First Lady Madam Fatima Bio said the newly crowned Paramount Chief, who was traditionally being handed over to his people on that day, was a good man, adding that he would need the support and cooperation of his people.

“The chieftaincy has returned to the Bio family. This is where the crown belongs because the Bios are the rightful owners of the chieftaincy in Sogbini Chiefdom,” she said.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Tamba John Sylvanus Lamina, said the people of Sogbini Chiefdom had elected one of theirs to become a Paramount Chief.

“Chieftaincy has customs and traditions. The role of Paramount Chiefs was to maintain law and order at the chiefdom level. However, that is now changing because President Bio is involving them in the governance of the state, which has brought back their respect and dignity.

“Last year, President Bio invited all Paramount Chiefs to State House where he handed over electronic tablets to enable them to monitor the implementation of Free Quality Education, a flagship Government initiative. This is one of the new roles of Paramount Chiefs,” he said.

He advised the new chief to rule his people fairly and work with the chiefdom committees.

P.C. Prince Lansana Wonie Bio V responded by assuring the President and Minister that he would rule his people justly.

“I have left my career in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces to come and serve my people. Now that I’m here, I want to embark on farming. Our people are predominantly farmers and we just need help from the Government to farm,” he said.

NP-SL is Keen on Continuing to Optimize Customer Care in 2023

National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL-Ltd)

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The most trusted, reliable and result oriented petroleum marketing entity in Sierra Leone, the National Petroleum-Sierra Leone (NP-SL) is all set to continue optimizing opportunities to ensure that there is availability of various petroleum products, year round, that could be procured at various NP Filling Stations across the country.

Management of the company is with renewed vigour determined, as always, to create the leeway for Customer Care to be taken on a high pedestal everywhere the company is operating.

It was reliably learnt that the Shareholders and Management of the company are very much interested in how customers are treated and are doing everything within their ambit to optimize it with a view that if such is done impressively and respectfully such will retain its customers and as well woo others to do business with the entity.

In 2022 the company conducted nationwide trainings of Station Managers and Pump Attendants on how to professionally treat customers and such a positive move has been yielding fruitful dividends.

Established by thirty five Sierra Leoneans , who were former employees of the British Petroleum company out of shares they bought, NP-SL Ltd over the years, has placed high premium on customer care and therefore thought it entrepreneurially prudent to import and install modern calibrated pumping machines in all its Filling Stations.

These are automated and high precision machines which have the capability of pumping the exact quantity of fuel that a particular buyer or customer requests for, displaying quantity (in litres) as well as the price(s). With these machines, contrary to what used to obtain in the past when less sophisticated pumping machines were used, customers have sincerely attested that they do derive utmost satisfaction whenever they do transactions expressing the belief that the process is really transparent.

Within that same domain of satisfying and providing care for its customers, the company made it a must that all its Filling Stations should have safety regulations. Such is done to serve as a caution for customers and others not to use naked flame, to switch mobile phones and engines switched off at Filling Stations when fuel is pumped among others.

With the avowed objective of making fuel transactions easier and very convenient for its esteemed and numerous customers, the company again introduced the brilliant idea of putting into vogue the use of NP Smart Card. This is a cashless way of transacting business or in other words purchasing fuel without using physical cash. The holder of an NP Smart Card could present the card at any Filling Station, as long as it contains money, and request for the quantity of fuel he or she requires.

The card is then slotted into the pumping machine with the subsequent discharge of the amount of fuel into a car or jerry can. This method of conducting cashless transaction is very advantageous in the sense that a customer is saved the hassle of intermittently rushing to the bank to withdraw cash for the sole purpose of purchasing fuel. This is so because already his or her NP Smart Card is loaded with money for that purpose. Indeed, it also provides security as the card is securitized only having the particulars of the holder which cannot be used by another person.

The Shareholders and Management of the company thought it fit that to make cooking safer and less health hazardous to introduce an environmentally cooking device known as NP Gas.

Manufactured in different cylinder sizes, NP Gas has a high precision performance and for it to be refilled it is simple as the gas could be accessed at all the company’s Filling Stations in the country.

Many whom have tried them intimated this medium that it is worth having at home and one could never regret having it but would rather recommend it to others.

NP-SL Ltd has etched its name in the sands of time for embracing and effectively rolling out the country’s Local Content Policy. As one of its major priorities, the company has placed high premium on giving employment preference to Sierra Leoneans. It is only on rare circumstances that the company makes use of expatriates and in most cases it is when local personnel cannot be sourced.

In a country where accessing a secured and suitable job is like finding a needle on the beach for a company like NP-SL Ltd to avail Sierra Leoneans the opportunity to access job is indeed commendable. This posture, on the part of the company, has given the beneficiaries the opportunity to live improved lifestyles and have a sense of believing that they are contributing to national development.

A company that has vibrant branches in neighbouring Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast and The Gambia speaks volumes of a serious business entity that is determined to grow. In all those countries, the company employs indigenes and is paying taxes to the Governments which in turn are used to fund various development programmes.

It must be concluded that though the company is going through various challenges, one of which is to gain easy access to foreign exchange, the Board of Directors, Shareholders and Management are more determined to prevent energy poverty or shortage of petroleum products that could have far reaching socio-economic and political implications.
