Coalition of Healthcare Workers Calls for Inclusive Dialogue with Ministry of Health

The Coalition of Healthcare Workers Sierra Leone has issued a strong statement on Wednesday December 11, 2024 expressing deep concerns over the recent actions of the Sierra Leone Health Workers Union. The coalition, which includes representatives from various healthcare associations, emphasizes the necessity for open and transparent dialogue with the Ministry of Health.

In an official release, the coalition criticized the Ministry for reportedly engaging in discussions without the involvement of essential stakeholders, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Sierra Leone (PSSL), Sierra Leone Association of Community Health Workers (SLACHO), Sierra Leone Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (SLAMLS), Sierra Leone Nurses Association (SLNA) and Sierra Leone Midwives Association (SLMA).

The coalition insists that any future negotiations must be conducted with full transparency and the active participation of all relevant healthcare workers. They argue that the exclusion of these groups undermines the principles of inclusivity and accountability, which are vital for effective healthcare governance.

Dr. Eugene B. S. Conteh, the coalition lead and president of PSSL, stated, “We remain open to constructive dialogue and are committed to ensuring that the interests of healthcare workers are prioritized moving forward.”

The coalition’s position reflects a broader call for unity among healthcare professionals in Sierra Leone, urging the Ministry of Health to recognize the importance of their collective knowledge and expertise in discussions that impact their work and the health of the nation.

As the situation develops, the coalition has vowed to continue advocating for engagement that respects the rights and interests of all healthcare workers, ensuring that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes that affect their professions and the communities they serve.
