Bar Association President & ECSL Chief Engage on Electoral Reforms

The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone,  Edmond Sylvester Alpha, on Tuesday, 5th May 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA), Madam Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara, as part of ongoing engagements aimed at strengthening electoral governance and promoting democratic accountability in Sierra Leone.

The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration among key national stakeholders in support of credible, transparent and accountable electoral processes across the country.

Speaking during the engagement, Edmond Sylvester Alpha emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation, coordination and dialogue among institutions, including civil society organizations, political parties and professional bodies, in rebuilding public trust and confidence in Sierra Leone’s electoral system.

He noted that strengthening partnerships with respected institutions such as the Sierra Leone Bar Association remains critical in advancing electoral reforms and reinforcing democratic integrity nationwide.

According to the ECSL Chairman, the role of legal professionals and institutions in promoting justice, constitutionalism and electoral accountability is vital to ensuring peaceful and credible elections.

In response, Madam Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara reaffirmed the Sierra Leone Bar Association’s commitment to supporting the Commission’s reform agenda and democratic initiatives.

She assured the ECSL leadership that the Association stands ready to work closely with the Commission and other stakeholders in promoting transparency, accountability and public confidence in the electoral process.

Madam Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara further stressed the importance of inclusive stakeholder participation in strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding the rule of law in Sierra Leone.

The engagement forms part of ECSL’s broader strategy to deepen partnerships with national institutions and stakeholders as efforts continue toward meaningful electoral reforms and improved democratic governance in the country.

Observers say such engagements are essential in fostering mutual understanding, institutional cooperation and public confidence in Sierra Leone’s democratic processes.
