In a nation where pediatric specialists are scarce, the arrival of Dr. Mohamad Hashem marks a significant advancement in child healthcare. With only 10 pediatricians serving the entire country, thousands of children have struggled to access specialized medical care. Now, Dr. Mohamad Hashem, an experienced pediatrician with over 30 years of practice in Lebanon and Germany, has established a children’s clinic in Freetown, offering renewed hope for families in need.

Sierra Leone continues to battle high infant and child mortality rates, though improvements have been achieved recently, with leading causes of death including malaria (33%), pneumonia (20%) and diarrhea (14%). The country’s infant mortality rate stands at 66.7 deaths per 1,000 live births as of 2025. The need for pediatricians like Dr. Mohamad Hashem has never been more pressing.

Dr. Mohamad Hashem is a distinguished member of the Lebanese Order of Physicians and the Lebanese Pediatric Society. He has served as the Head of the Southern Lebanon Pediatric Society and has extensive experience in treating childhood diseases, allergies and general pediatric conditions. “For me, medicine is not just a profession; it is a mission,” Dr. Mohamad Hashem stated. “I believe in providing care without discrimination ensuring that every child receives the medical attention they deserve.”

Dr. Mohamad Hashem’s decision to settle in Sierra Leone is both personal and professional. Having visited the country multiple times and developed a deep connection with its people, he saw an urgent need for pediatric expertise and decided to contribute his skills where they are most needed.

“Being close to my family and siblings was important to me and at the same time, I saw that I could help Sierra Leonean children get the best pediatric care,” he shared.

His career journey has been diverse, spanning general practice, oncology and pediatrics. Originally from Lebanon, he pursued his medical education in Russia, earning a diploma in general medicine after seven years of study. He then worked in Sierra Leone as a tropical disease doctor before moving to Germany to specialize further in oncology and pediatrics.

At his new clinic on Wilkinson Road, Dr. Mohamad Hashem takes a holistic approach to child healthcare. Every consultation includes a comprehensive health assessment, ensuring that no medical concerns are overlooked. His examination process covers vital signs, growth tracking, ear and oral health checks, nervous system evaluation and internal organ assessments.

Beyond treating illnesses, Dr. Mohamad Hashem is a strong advocate for preventive healthcare, emphasizing the importance of vaccinations and disease prevention measures. “The key to good health is prevention at home,” he advised. “Keeping a clean environment, eating a balanced diet and taking precautions during disease outbreaks can make a significant difference.”

Dr. Mohamad Hashem’s arrival is a crucial step toward strengthening Sierra Leone’s pediatric healthcare infrastructure.
