EU-Funded MEDIA Project Launched to Strengthen Press Freedom in Sierra Leone

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

A new European Union-funded initiative aimed at bolstering media freedom and strengthening journalism in Sierra Leone was officially launched on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The Media Empowerment for Democracy, Inclusion and Accountability (MEDIA) Project was introduced at an event in the capital, Freetown, attended by around 30 key stakeholders from the local media sector. The project is spearheaded by BBC Media Action in collaboration with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).

The two-year MEDIA project seeks to enhance media governance, promote gender equality in journalism and ensure greater independence for the country’s public broadcaster. Additionally, it will support SLAJ in strengthening its role as an advocate for journalists’ rights and professional welfare.

During the launch event, Edward Kargbo, Country Director for BBC Media Action, described the MEDIA project as a “beacon of hope and courage” at a critical time for Sierra Leone’s democracy. He highlighted its potential to empower the media sector, enhance inclusivity and increase accountability in governance.

IFJ Project Expert, Jeremy Dear, who attended the launch, emphasized the importance of empowering journalists to exercise their professional and labor rights. “There can be no genuine media freedom unless journalists themselves have a strong collective voice and are able to work without fear,” he stated. He further underscored SLAJ’s role in ensuring a robust press in Sierra Leone.

Speaking at the event, SLAJ President, Ahmed Nasrallah, called the MEDIA project a strategic investment in Sierra Leone’s press freedom. He noted that the initiative provides a unique opportunity for media organizations such as SLAJ, the Independent Radio Network (IRN) and the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) to build upon their mandates and expand their collective impact on media professionalism and public interest journalism.

The MEDIA project is funded by the European Union and is implemented in partnership with BBC Media Action, the IFJ and the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). Its objectives align with ongoing efforts to create a more independent, inclusive and accountable media landscape in Sierra Leone.

This initiative comes at a time when press freedom and journalist safety remain key concerns in the country. By enhancing SLAJ’s capacity to advocate for journalists’ rights and by reinforcing ethical journalism practices, the MEDIA project aims to serve as a cornerstone for democratic progress and media independence in Sierra Leone.

With this ambitious project now in motion, stakeholders in Sierra Leone’s media industry are hopeful that it will usher in a new era of transparency, professionalism and resilience within the country’s press. As implementation progresses, the impact of the MEDIA project is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening democracy and media freedom in Sierra Leone.

As He Dilates on Various Topical Issues… Foreign Minister Alhaji Timothy Kabba Assures the Public of No US Travel Ban, Clarifies Misleading Reports

Amid growing concerns over the possibility of a US travel ban on Sierra Leoneans, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Timothy Kabba, has clarified that no visa restrictions have been imposed on Sierra Leone. Speaking during the Good Morning Salone program on Radio Democracy on March 19, 2025, the Minister dismissed reports circulating in the media, notably in The New York Times, which suggested that Sierra Leone was among 43 countries facing potential visa restrictions.

Alhaji Timothy Kabba emphasized that neither the US State Department’s official website nor any formal communication from the US Government has indicated that Sierra Leone is on a list of countries under visa restrictions. He further assured the public, stating that following a discussion with US Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan David Hunt, it was confirmed that the document circulating online was not from the US State Department.

“We have not seen such an indication from the US Government and there is no listing of Sierra Leone under visa restriction on the State Department’s website. After speaking with Ambassador Hunt, it was confirmed that the document in question did not originate from the State Department,” Alhaji Timothy Kabba reiterated.

The Minister acknowledged that there had been some concerns from the US Government regarding Sierra Leoneans overstaying their visas, particularly those with tourist and visitor visas. However, Alhaji Timothy Kabba reassured the public that US consular services in Sierra Leone were being carried out as usual, with visas being issued to deserving applicants.

He also provided an update on Sierra Leone’s diplomatic relations, stating that the country continues to maintain strong bilateral ties with its global partners. “We have 27 embassies across the world and they are functioning quite well. In the last three years, we have opened four new embassies; in France, Ireland, Qatar and Algeria, efforts aimed at protecting our country’s interests and promoting our image globally,” he added.

Addressing another issue, the Minister refuted allegations that Sierra Leone is a hub for drug activities, noting that none of Sierra Leone’s international partners have labeled the country as such. He urged Sierra Leoneans to focus on promoting the nation’s positive image to attract foreign investment.

In response to the recent drug incident involving Sierra Leone’s former Ambassador to Guinea, Alhaji Timothy Kabba confirmed that Guinean authorities impounded an embassy vehicle that was allegedly transporting drugs. He explained that while there was some resistance regarding the Ambassador’s return to Sierra Leone, international law did not permit his arrest due to the nature of the offense.

“The substance was not found in the Ambassador’s diplomatic vehicle, and the Ambassador was not present in the vehicle. Under the Vienna Convention of 1962, the Ambassador enjoyed diplomatic immunity, so we decided to recall him for further clarification,” Alhaji Timothy Kabba explained.

He also updated the public on President John Dramani Mahama’s recent visit to Sierra Leone, describing it as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen bilateral relations and explore new areas of cooperation. “President Mahama’s visit was aimed at expressing gratitude to President Bio for the excellent relations between the two countries and discussing the establishment of a permanent joint cooperation commission,” the Minister noted.

Regarding the ongoing issue with the Dutch Government and the case involving Jos Leijdekkers, Alhaji Timothy Kabba emphasized that Sierra Leone has a positive relationship with the Netherlands. He confirmed that a formal request for extradition had been received from the Dutch Government and was being reviewed by Sierra Leone’s Attorney General in accordance with the Extradition Act of 1974.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador Bryan David Hunt during the AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone program on March 20, 2025, clarified that the reports of a visa ban on Sierra Leone were false. “What I can say definitively is that there is no visa ban in place for Sierra Leone or any other country,” Bryan David Hunt said. He explained that while there had been concerns about visa overstays and illegal immigration, the US Embassy in Freetown continues to process visas for qualified applicants.

The Ambassador did acknowledge that about 15% of Sierra Leoneans with tourist and business visas had overstayed and approximately 35% of student visa holders had remained in the United States illegally. He emphasized the need for this situation to change.

The ongoing concerns over potential US visa restrictions gained traction after a report by The New York Times placed Sierra Leone in the “orange tier” of countries, signaling potential limitations on visas. This sparked fears that the country might face a travel ban, with some speculating that it was linked to narcotics-related issues or broader immigration restrictions from the Trump administration.

Ambassador Hunt and Minister Kabba met on March 17, 2025, to address these concerns, with the discussion also covering key bilateral issues. While the meeting’s official purpose was to introduce the new Peace Corps Director, Tim Miller, both parties reportedly discussed the visa concerns in detail. The US Embassy confirmed that the meeting aimed to reinforce US-Sierra Leone cooperation, but the visa issue remained a central topic.

As the situation continues to unfold, both the Sierra Leonean Government and the US Embassy have urged the public to rely on official sources for information, urging against the spread of unverified claims.

MRCG Launches National Fund for Public Interest Media to Strengthen Journalism

By Alvin Lansana Kargbo

The Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG), in collaboration with its partners, has officially launched the National Fund for Public Interest Media (NaFPIM) on Thursday 20th March, 2025 at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. This initiative marks a major milestone in efforts to strengthen independent journalism in Sierra Leone through competitive small grants for media organizations.

The fund, administered by MRCG and governed by a multi-stakeholder Board, is part of a broader strategy to enhance media viability in the country. It stems from the National Action Plan for Media Viability, which was developed in 2022 with input from media stakeholders. NaFPIM is designed to support public interest journalism free from political and commercial pressures, fostering civic participation and ensuring citizens have access to credible information.

NaFPIM aims to promote the production and dissemination of public interest media content, disburse grants to media institutions, conduct research, advocate for press freedom and manage resources effectively. It will also focus on helping media houses innovate, enhance internal systems and diversify revenue streams to ensure long-term sustainability.

The fund is guided by five core principles: impartiality, accountability, transparency, diversity and innovation. These values are expected to set the foundation for a more resilient and ethical media sector in Sierra Leone.

Delivering the welcome statement, Dr. Francis Sowa, National Coordinator of MRCG, recounted the journey leading to the fund’s launch. He highlighted the National Media Identity and Investment Conference, where stakeholders identified key reforms, including the need for sustainable media financing.

“While some doubted the feasibility of this initiative, others believed in its potential,” Dr. Francis Sowa noted. “With the support of partners like BBC Media Action and the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), we have built an operational framework to ensure this fund is impactful and sustainable.”

Comparing the process to a nine-month gestation period, he described the launch as the “birth” of a long-anticipated solution to the financial struggles of Sierra Leone’s media industry.

In her keynote address, Saraphine Wakanda, the UN Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone, emphasized the importance of independent journalism in democracy and governance.

“Media plays a critical role in shaping public discourse and holding power to account,” she said. “Yet, journalists worldwide face increasing threats. In 2024 alone, 68 journalists were killed, many in conflict zones. We must do more to protect them.”

Saraphine Wakanda highlighted the UN’s commitment to fighting misinformation and disinformation, particularly during elections. She called for collaborative support from the Government, Civil Society and private sector to ensure NaFPIM’s success.

Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Bockarie Abdel-Aziz Bayoh, underscored the Government’s dedication to media development. He revealed how they will fulfil the $50,000 commitment from President Julius Maada Bio’s administration to jumpstart the fund.

“Impoverished journalists pose a significant threat to media integrity—just as dangerous as a bomb threat,” he stated. “Sustaining public interest journalism is crucial for democracy and Government funding ensures the media remains fair and balanced.”

He urged journalists to remain independent, warning against political bias in reporting. The Deputy Minister emphasized the need for media houses to focus on public interest rather than Government or opposition narratives.

Representing the International Fund for Public Interest Media, Makmid Kamara, the Regional Director for Africa and the Middle East reaffirmed IFPIM’s investment in Sierra Leone’s media landscape.

“The collapse of public interest media threatens truth, trust and democracy,” he warned. “In an era where advertising revenue is declining and corporate influence is growing, flexible funding is essential to safeguard journalism.”

Makmid Kamara noted that IFPIM provides grants in over 40 countries, aiming to build media survivability, resilience and regulatory strength. He encouraged the Sierra Leonean Government to honor its commitment and ensure continued investment in NaFPIM.

Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and Chair of NaFPIM’s Stakeholder Board, expressed pride in the fund’s establishment.

“This marks a historic turning point for independent journalism in Sierra Leone,” he declared. “We have fought for media freedom, from the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law in 2020 to today’s launch of a national fund that will empower journalists.”

The SLAJ President emphasized the need for Government and private sector support to keep the fund sustainable. He urged journalists to produce high-quality, investigative journalism that serves the public good.

Speaking at the event, Edward Benjamin Kargbo, BBC Media Action Country Director, highlighted the financial struggles of media houses in Sierra Leone.

“Media poverty is a major challenge,” he noted. “Good journalism is expensive; it requires resources, training and motivation. This fund is a long-overdue solution to sustaining public interest journalism.”

He recalled his experiences as a community radio mentor, where small investments made a huge impact on journalistic quality. He called for long-term collaboration between media stakeholders to fully implement the National Action Plan for Media Viability.

Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq., Chairman of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), lauded the launch of NaFPIM as a significant step in media sustainability.

“This fund will help media houses break free from financial constraints that often compromise their independence,” Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq. stated. “The IMC is committed to working with NaFPIM to ensure that grants are fairly distributed and used effectively.”

He urged media houses to apply for grants, emphasizing that financial independence strengthens democracy, governance and national development.

The National Fund for Public Interest Media is now open for applications, allowing media institutions to apply for grants to support their journalism projects. Interested applicants can visit www.mrcgonline.org and follow the instructions to submit their applications.

The launch of NaFPIM marks a significant step toward strengthening independent journalism in Sierra Leone. By providing financial support and promoting public interest reporting, the initiative is expected to enhance media viability, foster innovation and contribute to a more informed and engaged society. With backing from national and international stakeholders, NaFPIM is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of journalism in Sierra Leone.

As International Partners Pledge Millions… Vice President Highlights Government’s Commitment to Sustainable Environmental Management

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the environment, emphasizing the significant strides taken to address climate change and conservation.

Speaking at the inaugural National Forest and Climate Forum, held at the Bintumani Auditorium in Aberdeen on Tuesday, March 18, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh underscored the urgent need to safeguard the nation’s forests and natural resources. He noted that deforestation and climate change pose major threats to Sierra Leone’s ecological future.

“Our forests are under threat. The future of our forests depends on our ability to manage these resources effectively. The challenges posed by climate change are significant,” he stated.

Representing His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, the Vice President outlined Government’s conservation vision and climate change strategy. He stressed the need to integrate local regulatory frameworks to enhance environmental resilience and sustainability.

Highlighting proactive measures, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh announced that Sierra Leone is preparing to conduct a Forest Inventory for the first time since 1975. Additionally, the country is working on a Sustainable Biodiversity Financing Framework to enhance conservation efforts.

He further revealed that with support from the European Union, Sierra Leone is embarking on a National Inventory Plan aimed at mapping and preserving vital ecosystems. The Government has also set an ambitious goal to recover 30% of lost land by 2030.

“We are developing a comprehensive biodiversity finance strategy that will serve as a roadmap for overcoming environmental challenges,” Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh said. He urged all citizens to play an active role in environmental protection.

The three-day forum, organized by the Ministry of Environment in partnership with various stakeholders, was aimed to foster collaborative discussions on safeguarding Sierra Leone’s natural resources. The event, which ran until March 20, brought together Government officials, environmental experts, international partners and local community leaders.

Minister of the Environment, Jiwoh E. Abdulai, echoed the Vice President’s sentiments, highlighting human activities as a major contributor to climate change. He emphasized the need to find sustainable alternatives to traditional cooking methods, which drive deforestation.

“If we are to protect our environment, it must be a collective effort,” Jiwoh E. Abdulai stated. “We must make affordable alternatives readily available to reduce the pressure on our forests.”

The Minister also highlighted the importance of the Western Area Peninsula Park, describing it as one of Sierra Leone’s most valuable environmental assets. “Only when we protect our environment can we truly enjoy its beauty and benefits,” he added.

As part of the Government’s broader environmental strategy, Jiwoh Abdulai, unveiled the four-part ‘Protect Sierra Leone’ initiative. The plan focuses on:

  1. Protecting critical terrestrial biodiversity through integrated landscape management.
  2. Scaling up community forests to empower local conservation efforts.
  3. Sustainably managing marine resources to ensure long-term ecological balance.
  4. Reducing deforestation by promoting alternative cooking fuel solutions.

“We want to protect our environment because it is in our best interest,” Minister Jiwoh Abdulai stated. “Natural resource conservation is vital for our survival.”

He emphasized that tackling deforestation requires addressing the underlying need for cooking fuel. “We need to bring affordable alternatives to reduce dependency on wood and charcoal,” he said.

International partners also pledged their support. Daniela Raik, Executive Vice President of Conservation International, praised Sierra Leone’s ambitious environmental initiatives and stressed the need for global cooperation in tackling climate change.

“The natural heritage of Sierra Leone is one of its greatest assets and it is vital that we protect it,” Daniela Raik said. “The environment knows no political boundaries and our efforts to protect it must be collaborative.”

She also announced that Conservation International will establish a local office in Sierra Leone to work closely with communities on conservation efforts.

Similarly, World Bank Country Director, Abdul Muwonge, unveiled a $60 million environmental project to bolster water security in the Western Area Peninsula Park, reinforcing the country’s conservation agenda.

The National Forest and Climate Forum was one of the most comprehensive and high-profile environmental conferences held in Sierra Leone in decades. It attracted participation from Government officials, community stakeholders, environmental activists and international organizations such as Conservation International.

During the conference, delegates engaged in strategic discussions and breakout sessions to formulate actionable plans that align with Sierra Leone’s environmental conservation goals.

With strong Governmental and international backing, the forum marked a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s fight against climate change and environmental degradation. The Government’s commitment, coupled with collaborative partnerships, set the stage for a sustainable and resilient future for the nation’s natural resources.

Sierra Leonean model and brand influencer, Esther Yeanoh Kamara, has publicly refuted allegations of financial misconduct made against her by Lake Production. In a Press Release dated March 19, 2025 Esther Yeanoh Kamara described the accusations as “baseless, false and unfounded,” maintaining that she has substantial evidence to prove her innocence.

The controversy stems from a March 7, 2025 Press Statement issued by the Management of Lake Production, titled: “Immediate Action Required: Misuse of Funds and Expulsion.” Signed by Musa A. Kamara, Chief Operating Officer of Lake Group of Companies, a subsidiary of Miss Freetown Pageant SL Limited, the release accuses Esther Yeanoh Kamara of mismanaging SLE 52,888 related to the 2024 Miss Freetown event. The statement was widely circulated online on March 17 by popular blog pages, including Hawanatu Konneh Network and Salone Gossip Reloaded, featuring Esther Yeanoh Kamara’s photographs without her consent.

Esther Yeanoh Kamara, who has worked with Lake Production from 2021 to March 2025, expressed disappointment over what she termed as character assassination. “If Lake Production believes I misused their funds, there are proper channels to follow for recovery,” she stated, adding that her commitment to professionalism and integrity remains intact.

The release from Lake Production reportedly warned of legal consequences, including possible intervention by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), if Esther Yeanoh Kamara fails to refund the mentioned sum within 48 hours. However, Esther Yeanoh Kamara remains undeterred. “I have consulted my legal team and possess all necessary evidence to prove my innocence. I have a family name and a brand to protect and I will not compromise my hard-earned reputation for this,” she declared.

She also highlighted her role in organizing what she described as one of the most successful Miss Freetown events in Sierra Leone’s history, crediting her hard work and that of her team for the event’s success.

As the dispute unfolds, it remains to be seen whether legal proceedings will be initiated. While Esther Yeanoh Kamara asserts her confidence in clearing her name, Lake Production has yet to respond publicly to her statement.

For now, Esther Yeanoh Kamara remains “calm and optimistic,” expressing her readiness to address the matter through appropriate legal channels.
