CODE Awards 10 ICT Scholarships to Women on International Women’s Day

By Foday Moriba Conteh

In a major step toward women’s empowerment in technology, the Founder and Director of the College of Digital Excellence (CODE), Niharika Agnani, has announced the awarding of 10 scholarships to women to study essential basic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills at the College of Digital Excellence (CODE).

The announcement was made on Saturday, March 8, 2025, during the International Women’s Day commemoration event organized by UN Women Sierra Leone and the High Commission of India at the Sierra Palms Hotel on Lumley Beach in Freetown. Themed: “For All Women and Girls’ Rights: Equality, Empowerment,” the event highlighted the crucial role of women in society and the ongoing efforts needed to ensure gender equality.

Niharika Agnani, in her address, emphasized the need for women to be recognized and safeguarded, questioning societal norms that necessitate laws and regulations to protect them. She underscored the importance of raising children with the right values, noting that empowerment begins at home with mothers playing a vital role in shaping both boys and girls.

“Why do we need to depend on others to safeguard us? Why can’t we be just ourselves?” she questioned, advocating for a cultural shift where women can thrive without external protection. Reflecting on her own journey, she shared her experiences growing up in India and her involvement in street theater to raise awareness about women’s rights.

Having lived in Sierra Leone for 30 years, Niharika Agnani considers the country her home. She highlighted her long-standing commitment to education, dating back to her work with schools (Sainik School & Army School) before transitioning to education initiatives in Sierra Leone in 2005. As the founder of CODE, established in April 2021 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Niharika Agnani has been committed to building digital literacy and empowering people, particularly women, to break barriers in technology.

“Most ICT courses are designed with male students in mind. We have to break those barriers,” she stated, recounting the inspiring story of a former cleaner at CODE who took the initiative to learn computer skills and is now a marketer. “If a cleaner can train and become a marketer, nothing is impossible.”

Niharika Agnani also spoke about her recent venture, Choithram International School, which offers a Cambridge curriculum while employing an entirely locally sourced teaching faculty. She expressed pride in her team’s progress in embracing digital tools and becoming technologically proficient, reinforcing her belief that with the right support, training and guidance, women can excel in any field.

She concluded her address by calling on women to raise their voices and support each other to ensure that future generations of girls do not have to rely on external safeguards for their rights and safety.

The scholarship initiative by CODE is expected to provide life-changing opportunities for the 10 selected women, equipping them with essential ICT skills to thrive in the digital economy and contribute to Sierra Leone’s development.

Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), Madam Musayeroh Barrie

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), Madam Musayeroh Barrie, paid a heartfelt visit to her grandfather’s home in Kabala Town, Koinadugu District, on March 9, 2025. According to her social media post, this was her first visit to the place where her mother and siblings grew up. She expressed deep emotions about the experience, particularly her contribution to a masjid built in honor of her grandfather and her participation in prayers with children receiving free Islamic lessons.

“Visiting my grandfather’s house in Kabala for the first time, where my mum & her siblings grew up, was surreal. Contributing to the masjid built in his honor and praying with children receiving free Islamic lessons was deeply moving. There’s no greater feeling than giving back!” she shared.

Madam Musayeroh Barrie’s visit followed her recent recognition with the prestigious Bai Bureh Service Delivery Award on March 6, 2025, for her contributions to Sierra Leone’s development. The award highlighted her role in fostering youth-led initiatives, particularly in Port Loko District.

Under her leadership, the SLCAA has achieved remarkable progress in key areas, including safety compliance, capacity building and international collaboration. Those efforts have positioned Sierra Leone as an emerging player in the global aviation industry.

A major milestone in this journey has been the development of a strategic plan to remove Sierra Leone from the European Union’s aviation safety list by early 2025. Crafted through successful engagements with the European Union Safety Commission, the plan demonstrates the SLCAA’s strong commitment to meeting international aviation standards. The anticipated removal is expected to improve safety, boost airline confidence and enhance air travel accessibility.

Another landmark achievement was the processing of the first-ever Air Operator Certificate (AOC) application, signaling a new era for Sierra Leone’s aviation industry. This development is expected to support the growth of domestic carriers and strengthen the country’s aviation infrastructure.

Madam Musayeroh Barrie has also prioritized capacity building, ensuring SLCAA technical staff receive specialized training to enhance their expertise. Training programs in Italy have further honed the skills of Sierra Leone’s aviation professionals, equipping them to meet the demands of a growing sector.

A pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s aviation progress was the signing of a management service agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) during the Air Navigation Conference in Montreal in August 2024. That agreement includes the establishment of an ICAO-recognized training school, a cornerstone of Madam Musayeroh Barrie’s vision to develop a skilled workforce for the country’s aviation industry.

“These achievements are a testament to the dedication of SLCAA staff and the collaborative efforts of our partners,” she stated. “In just one year, we have laid a foundation that will propel Sierra Leone’s aviation sector to new heights.”

Further showcasing Sierra Leone’s commitment to aviation excellence, Madam Musayeroh Barrie actively participated in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) 2025, held on February 11, 2025, in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The high-profile event, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, gathered aviation leaders, policymakers and industry experts to discuss sustainability, training and workforce development in the aviation sector.

The Director General was invited to participate in ICAO’s first-ever all-female panel discussion, “Evolving Training for Sustainable Aviation,” where she addressed strategies for attracting and retaining aviation professionals, integrating sustainability into training programs and strengthening workforce resilience. She highlighted the need for structured learning programs in Sierra Leone to expose young people to aviation careers.

“Sierra Leone is a country with youthful, forward-thinking leadership, which creates a tremendous opportunity for aviation development,” she noted. “Events like this provide invaluable knowledge and open doors for training and human resource development, crucial for the country’s progress.”

Madam Musayeroh Barrie acknowledged the challenges facing Sierra Leone’s aviation sector, including limited access to training and resource constraints. However, she emphasized that with increased regional collaboration, international partnerships and technological advancements, Sierra Leone’s aviation industry has the potential to thrive.

In a significant step towards strengthening Sierra Leone’s aviation workforce, Madam Musayeroh Barrie signed an ICAO Training Agreement under the Management Service Agreement (MSA), facilitating five major ICAO training courses in 2025. These courses include:

  1. Training Instructors Course (TIC EN)
  2. Training Developers Course (TDC EN)
  3. Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP EN) Auditor Preparation
  4. USOAP Continuous Monitoring Approach Phase 1 (Online Training)
  5. USOAP Continuous Monitoring Approach Phase 2, covering Personnel Licensing, Aircraft Operations, Airworthiness of Aircraft, Air Navigation Services, and Aerodrome and Ground Aids

The training is delivered both online and in-person by ICAO experts, ensuring relevance to Sierra Leone’s aviation needs.

Reflecting on her participation in ICAO GISS 2025, Madam Musayeroh Barrie expressed optimism about Sierra Leone’s aviation prospects:

“I was thrilled to be part of the symposium, where we explored the latest advancements in aviation technology and sustainable practices. It was a unique platform for networking, knowledge sharing and contributing to the global aviation industry’s progress.”

Since assuming office in August 2023, Madam Musayeroh Barrie has spearheaded significant reforms, including strengthening regulatory compliance, expanding collaborations with ICAO and the EU and enhancing safety oversight frameworks. With a clear vision and strong leadership, Sierra Leone is positioning itself as a key player in the West African aviation sector.

As Sierra Leone continues to refine its aviation strategies, the knowledge and partnerships gained from ICAO GISS 2025 mark a major step in developing a more robust, innovative and globally competitive aviation industry. Madam Musayeroh Barrie remains committed to fostering a sector that is both sustainable and attractive to young professionals, ensuring a brighter future for the country’s aviation landscape.

On International Women’s Day… UN Women Urges Global Action for Women’s Rights and Equality

By Foday Moriba Conteh

In commemorating International Women’s Day 2025, UN Women has called on everyone to stand up for the rights, empowerment and equality of all women and girls. According to reports, one in four countries experienced a backlash against women’s rights in 2024. Women’s and girls’ rights are facing unprecedented challenges globally, with increasing discrimination, weaker legal protections and reduced funding for gender-focused programs and institutions.

UN Women’s latest report, Women’s Rights in Review 30 Years After Beijing, published ahead of the 50th International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, reveals that nearly a quarter of Governments worldwide have reported a regression in women’s rights.

Despite notable progress over the years, the report highlights that only 87 countries have ever been led by a woman, and shockingly, a woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes by a partner or a family member. The digital space has also proven to be a double-edged sword, with artificial intelligence and technology reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes while the digital gender gap limits women’s opportunities.

The past decade has also witnessed a disturbing 50% increase in the number of women and girls affected by conflicts, while women’s rights defenders continue to face harassment, personal attacks and even death. Global crises such as COVID-19, climate change and economic instability have further exacerbated gender inequalities, making immediate action more crucial than ever.

“When women and girls can rise, we all thrive. Yet, globally, women’s human rights are under attack. Instead of mainstreaming equal rights, we’re seeing the mainstreaming of misogyny. Together, we must stand firm in making human rights, equality and empowerment a reality for all women and girls, for everyone, everywhere,” stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Echoing that call, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous reaffirmed the organization’s commitment: “UN Women is dedicated to ensuring that ALL Women and Girls, everywhere can fully enjoy their rights and freedoms. The challenges are complex, but our determination to push forward remains unwavering. Women and girls are demanding change and they deserve nothing less.”

As the world marks 30 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most comprehensive roadmap for advancing women’s rights, the UN report acknowledges significant strides. Since 1995:

  • Gender parity has been achieved in girls’ education.
  • Maternal mortality has declined by one-third.
  • Women’s representation in parliaments has more than doubled.
  • Over 1,531 legal reforms have been enacted in 189 countries to remove discriminatory laws.

However, those advances are not enough. The report emphasizes that achieving full gender equality and meeting the targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development require intensified efforts.

The Beijing+30 Action Agenda outlines six key areas where urgent action is needed:

  • Digital Inclusion – Ensuring women and girls have equal access to technology, leading in AI and digital innovation and guaranteeing online safety.
  • Freedom from Poverty – Investing in social protection, universal healthcare, education and robust care services to create sustainable opportunities.
  • Eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls – Strengthening legal frameworks, increasing funding and supporting grassroots organizations combating gender-based violence.
  • Equal Decision-Making Power – Enforcing gender quotas and policies to accelerate women’s political and economic participation.
  • Peace and Security – Fully financing gender-responsive humanitarian aid and empowering women-led organizations as key actors in conflict resolution and peace-building.
  • Climate Justice – Prioritizing women’s leadership in climate adaptation and ensuring equal access to emerging green jobs and sustainable opportunities.

Additionally, the agenda stresses the importance of placing young women and girls at the heart of these efforts, ensuring that future generations inherit a more equal world.

With the upcoming Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) and the continued commemoration of Beijing+30, global leaders, policymakers, and activists have a critical opportunity to institutionalize these reforms at national, regional, and global levels.

In a year marked by unprecedented challenges and growing resistance to gender equality, UN Women urges all stakeholders including Governments, civil society and the private sector to push back against setbacks and advocate for a world where all women and girls enjoy full rights and equal opportunities.

As UN Women reaffirms, “We can be the first generation that lives in an equal world.”

Koidu Limited Responds to Ongoing Strike, Pledges Commitment to Workers’ Safety

Koidu Limited

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The management and board of Koidu Limited have publicly addressed the ongoing industrial action at Koidu Diamond Mine, emphasizing their commitment to employee safety, legal compliance, and constructive dialogue to resolve grievances.

Koidu Limited on Wednesday March 12, 2025 reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of its employees and the surrounding community remain its top priority. The company maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence, intimidation, or incitement. In response to the industrial action, the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) has pledged full support, including assistance from security forces to maintain order and ensure a safe work environment.

The company highlighted that the ongoing strike action, which it deemed illegal under Sections 64 and 67 of the Industrial Relations and Trade Union Act 2023, was initiated to address concerns related to wages, reinstatement of dismissed workers, and overall working conditions. While Koidu Limited expressed a willingness to engage in direct negotiations to resolve these issues, it emphasized that discussions could only proceed if the strike was immediately called off, allowing workers to return safely.

Management warned that failure to adhere to Sierra Leonean labor laws and continued acts of incitement preventing workers from resuming their duties—especially any instances of violence—could lead to the withdrawal of all staff from the mine due to safety concerns. Such a move, they cautioned, would result in a complete shutdown of operations, posing a significant threat to the mine’s future viability.

Koidu Limited stated that it had actively sought to resolve the dispute through proper legal and governmental channels. Meetings have been held with key stakeholders, including the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, on March 7, 2025. Efforts to engage directly with the Minister of Mines, the National Minerals Agency, the Chief Minister, and even President Julius Maada Bio himself have also been made.

The company assured the government of its commitment to addressing all concerns raised by the aggrieved employees. As part of its proposed resolution, Koidu Limited has put forward initiatives such as a workforce salary review, the introduction of a quarterly diamond price-based bonus scheme, and other incentive programs. These measures, according to the company, will be implemented immediately upon reaching a mutual agreement through negotiations.

In response to allegations of corrupt or dishonest practices, Koidu Limited firmly rejected such claims, calling them baseless. The company reiterated that every diamond extracted from its mining operations is fully accounted for, conducted under the supervision of the GoSL, and in strict compliance with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.

Looking ahead, Koidu Limited remains dedicated to the long-term sustainability of the mine and the broader hard rock diamond industry in Sierra Leone. The company announced plans to disclose further ambitious initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration with key government officials, local stakeholders, and regional partners.

As the situation unfolds, Koidu Limited has assured that it will continue to engage with all relevant parties to find a mutually beneficial resolution that ensures the mine’s future operations while addressing workers’ concerns in a lawful and structured manner.

North-West University Scientists Lead AI Breakthrough in Malaria Research

Dr. Fortunate Mokoena
Dr. Fortunate Mokoena

A groundbreaking study by researchers at North-West University (NWU) has introduced a new frontier in the battle against malaria—one powered not by traditional laboratory methods, but by artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative approach leverages machine learning to accelerate drug discovery, offering a promising solution to one of Africa’s most persistent public health challenges.

Malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death, particularly in Africa, where the majority of cases occur. As the malaria parasite increasingly develops resistance to existing treatments, the need for novel drugs has never been more urgent. To address this, the NWU research team has focused on a critical protein essential for the parasite’s survival. Using AI-driven screening, they analyzed thousands of potential compounds that could block this protein, significantly reducing the time required for drug discovery compared to conventional methods.

“We need to stay ahead of the parasite by continuously developing innovative treatments,” said Dr. Fortunate Mokoena, a lead researcher from NWU’s Biochemistry subject group.

Among the thousands of compounds screened, one in particular—FTN-T5—has shown significant promise. In laboratory tests, FTN-T5 effectively destroyed the malaria parasite while remaining safe for human cells. However, further testing, including pre-clinical trials, will be necessary before it can be developed into a viable treatment.

“By using AI and machine learning, we were able to analyze vast datasets in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional approaches. This allows us to identify promising drug candidates much faster,” Dr. Mokoena explained.

While the research marks a major step forward, several hurdles remain. The transition from laboratory discovery to real-world application requires substantial funding, collaboration with pharmaceutical companies, rigorous clinical trials, and regulatory approvals. Large-scale manufacturing will also be necessary to ensure widespread availability.

“These findings provide a strong foundation for developing new malaria treatments,” Dr. Mokoena added. “Our goal is to create medicines that are not only effective but also have a lower risk of resistance. We are particularly focused on developing affordable treatments for underprivileged African populations.”

This study highlights the transformative role of AI in medical research, offering hope for faster and more cost-effective treatments, not just for malaria but for a range of infectious diseases. If successfully developed, AI-driven drug discovery could revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry and provide life-saving solutions to communities most in need.

As the fight against malaria continues, innovations like AI-powered drug discovery may hold the key to finally defeating this deadly disease.

AfriGas Condemns Cylinder Tampering and Short Refills, Urges Vigilance Among Consumers

By Ibrahim Sesay

AfriGas, Sierra Leone’s trusted name in safe and efficient cooking gas solutions, is raising the alarm over a growing wave of fraudulent practices that threaten consumer safety and confidence. The company has strongly denounced the unethical activities of unscrupulous individuals who tamper with AfriGas cylinder seals, manipulate refills and sell underweight gas to unsuspecting customers. This deceptive scheme not only shortchanges consumers but also compromises the integrity of the product, posing potential risks to households and businesses.

As a brand synonymous with quality, safety and reliability, AfriGas upholds the highest industry standards in the storage, handling and distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Every AfriGas cylinder undergoes stringent quality control protocols to ensure that customers receive the correct quantity of gas with an intact and tamper-proof seal. The company’s hallmark is its unwavering commitment to consumer protection and any breach of these safety measures undermines trust and exposes buyers to avoidable dangers.

Reports of individuals illicitly extracting gas from sealed cylinders, refilling them with reduced quantities and reselling them at full price have triggered concerns across the country. These unlawful acts not only defraud consumers but also introduce safety hazards, as improperly sealed cylinders may lead to leaks and other operational risks. AfriGas has expressed deep concern over this dishonest practice, emphasizing that it will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize public safety and confidence in its brand.

To combat these unethical activities, AfriGas has intensified its consumer education campaign, equipping buyers with the knowledge to detect tampered cylinders and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes. Customers are urged to always check for the authentic AfriGas seal before purchasing and to verify that the cylinder weight aligns with its stated capacity. The company has also reinforced its distribution monitoring systems to track and prevent unauthorized handling of its cylinders, ensuring that only certified dealers sell genuine AfriGas products.

In addition to consumer awareness, AfriGas is collaborating with regulatory authorities to crack down on illegal gas handling and enforce strict penalties against those engaging in these fraudulent acts. Consumers are encouraged to report suspicious activities to AfriGas or the relevant authorities, playing an active role in safeguarding their own safety and upholding the integrity of the market.

AfriGas remains resolute in its mission to provide Sierra Leonean households and businesses with clean, efficient and affordable cooking gas. As families prepare daily meals and celebrate significant occasions, the company assures customers of its continued dedication to quality, transparency and consumer well-being.

By choosing AfriGas, consumers are not only selecting a trusted energy solution but also standing against unethical practices that threaten safety and fairness in the marketplace.

With limited slots available, time is of the essence. This is an unprecedented opportunity for parents and guardians to ensure their children receive the life-changing medical care they need. Acting now can secure a healthier and brighter future for Sierra Leone’s young generation, reinforcing the country’s progress in advancing pediatric healthcare.
