This initiative, which was officially unveiled on Thursday, December 12, 2024 is designed to address the specific challenges faced by students, staff and local communities at the Njala Mokonde Campus. Under the leadership of Director General, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, the mobile service initiative is set to provide a seamless solution to registration and ID services.
The key features of the new service include:
Enhanced Accessibility: Mobile registration teams will be deployed to help eliminate scheduling conflicts and reduce the travel burdens faced by students, staff and local residents.
Cost-Effective Solution: The initiative seeks to minimize costs for individuals seeking essential registration services, making it more affordable for the local population.
Improved Operational Efficiency: The mobile service approach is in line with the NCRA’s ongoing efforts to streamline processes and improve the efficiency of service delivery.
Strong Support for Presidential Vision: This initiative directly aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for greater stakeholder engagement and increased uptake of national ID cards.
Expanded Reach: The NCRA has officially launched its mobile services at Njala Mokonde, with plans to extend its coverage to other academic institutions across the country in the near future.
Director General, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, reaffirmed the NCRA’s commitment to providing equitable access to civil registration services and underscored the importance of this initiative in advancing national development.
The NCRA urges all eligible individuals to take full advantage of the mobile registration services to obtain their national ID cards, thus contributing to the building of a more connected and efficiently managed nation.
Shadi Gerjawi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Africell Sierra Leone, took center stage at the Salone Civic Festival 2024, held at the Youyi Building on December 12, 2024. Participating in a panel discussion moderated by, Mohamed Jaward Nyallay, of the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Shadi Gerjawi shared valuable insights on the transformative role of technology, innovation and infrastructure in driving national development.
During his address, Shadi Gerjawi highlighted the revolutionary impact of Africell’s Afrimoney platform on financial inclusion in Sierra Leone. He explained that Afrimoney has drastically reduced the time required to complete financial transactions. “When we talk about financial inclusion, we have reduced the process from three hours to just one minute,” he stated. “In the past, making a payment or cashing a cheque required a trip to the bank, often resulting in long waits and high transportation costs. Now, with our initiatives, these transactions can be completed from the comfort of your homes.”
The festival featured a distinguished lineup of speakers and panelists, including Salima Monorna Bah, Hon. Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Hawa Kone and Dennis Sandy. Together, they engaged in a rich dialogue on crucial issues impacting the nation, with a special focus on technology, education and gender inclusion.
Expanding on Africell’s role in driving technological progress, Shadi Gerjawi emphasized the unseen efforts that fuel the company’s innovative products. He noted that while the public sees the “bright lights and bright colors” of Africell’s services, they are often unaware of the extensive investment, design work and problem-solving that happen behind the scenes. “Just like a tree where the roots go deep underground, much of our work is hidden from public view,” he explained, using the tree analogy to illustrate the hidden complexities that support visible successes.
The CEO also highlighted Africell’s commitment to education, particularly in providing support to schools, with a focus on bridging the technological divide between institutions. He acknowledged that while some schools in Freetown and parts of the provinces have access to computing resources, many others still lack such facilities. This disparity, he noted, underscores Africell’s resolve to level the playing field for all learners.
In a nod to gender equity, Shadi Gerjawi addressed the underrepresentation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges in recruiting female engineers for Africell’s technical department. “We’ve been actively trying to get more female engineers into our technical department, but it has been one of the most difficult tasks,” he admitted. Despite the high number of women graduating as engineers, many opt for careers in other fields.
When asked to offer advice to young people interested in the tech sector, Shadi Gerjawi chose to address a broader issue. He stressed the importance of adopting and supporting local technological solutions. “At Africell, ten years ago, we made the decision to venture with local entrepreneurs who were developing systems here in Sierra Leone rather than relying on off-the-shelf solutions from abroad,” he said. Although importing systems may have been cheaper, Africell’s decision to invest locally has proven to be a sustainable and impactful strategy.
As Africell continues to lead in the telecommunications sector, its initiatives like Afrimoney and its support for local innovation demonstrate the company’s people-centered approach. By fostering financial inclusion, promoting educational support and championing gender equity in STEM, Africell is helping to shape a more connected, inclusive and technologically advanced Sierra Leone.
In a move to bolster press freedom and media development, President Julius Maada Bio has announced a Le2.5 billion subvention for the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) for the 2025 financial year. This announcement was made during the Annual Presidential Media Cocktail at the Country Lodge Hotel in Freetown on December 10, 2024.
The event brought together an array of journalists, bloggers, media executives and Government officials, all gathered to witness the President’s reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to press freedom. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the increased subvention, which follows a steady financial boost for SLAJ since 2020, growing from Le200 million to Le1.5 billion in 2023 and 2024.
“For six years, I have not only fulfilled my promise on the annual subvention to SLAJ but have significantly increased this support each year,” President Bio declared, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to its 2023 Manifesto pledge to enhance media support.
With the theme: “Strengthening Press Freedom: A Shared Goal,” President Bio highlighted the vital role of the media in a democracy. “As journalists, your responsibility transcends merely reporting events; it shapes narratives, holds power to account and ensures that the voices of the marginalized and silenced are amplified,” he remarked. He further praised journalists as “the architects of our national story” and acknowledged their efforts in informing and enlightening the public.
President Bio’s administration has been lauded for advancing Sierra Leone’s position in global press freedom rankings. From 74th place in 2023 to 64th in 2024, Sierra Leone’s progress was attributed to legislative reforms, enhanced transparency and a secure environment for journalists. “Under my leadership, we have achieved significant advancements through progressive legal reforms that enhance, rather than hinder, journalistic work,” the President said, citing Sierra Leone’s 91% score on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) scorecard for freedom of information.
It must be noted that the SLPP Government is also focused on media-related initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education. One notable development is the validation of the National Media Policy, currently awaiting Cabinet approval. In addition, the establishment of the National Fund for Public Interest Media (NaFPIM-SL) has been announced, with support from the International Fund for Public Interest Media amounting to US$99,000, along with an additional US$50,000. President Bio pledged that the Government would match these contributions to strengthen the Fund.
Another critical step is the ongoing work on Sierra Leone’s Digital Migration Roadmap. The Government has appointed a consultant to oversee the transition to digital broadcasting, which is expected to expand opportunities for media innovation and audience engagement.
Throughout his address, President Bio urged journalists to continue promoting national unity, holding power accountable and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. “Journalists must foster a plurality of perspectives and ensure inclusive discourse that supports our democracy,” he stated.
He also reflected on his administration’s handling of key national events, including Sierra Leone’s presidency of the United Nations Security Council and the signing of the US$480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Energy Compact. “The media’s responsible reporting of these events has demonstrated its capacity to inform and unite the nation,” President Bio noted.
The President further discussed his Feed Salone initiative, which has mobilized over US$1 billion to boost rice cultivation and reduce the country’s reliance on food imports. “The Feed Salone initiative is a long-term program designed to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and ensure food security,” he said.
Concluding his address, President Bio made a passionate appeal for responsible journalism. “Let us advocate for a future where journalistic integrity flourishes, where the Press operates with unbridled freedom, and where every citizen’s right to information is guaranteed,” he said. He also called on reporters, editors and broadcasters to reflect Sierra Leoneans’ challenges and triumphs in their reporting.
Press Secretary, Yusuf Keketoma Sandy, commended the support of corporate sponsors such as Pavi Fort, Sierra Rutile, Orange SL, UBA, SLCB, Integrated Trade Services, Rokel Commercial Bank, Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, Capitol Fruit, Leone Rock Metal Group and J-Ban Group of Companies. “Your sponsorship reflects a shared belief in the importance of a robust media landscape,” Yusuf Sandy remarked.
SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla lauded President Bio’s unwavering support for press freedom, referring to him as a “Champion of Free Speech,” a title previously conferred on the President by SLAJ. He acknowledged President Bio’s historic role in the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law in 2020a m, which according to him, was a milestone achievement for media freedom in Sierra Leone.
“For 50 years, we fought to repeal that law and it was under President Bio’s leadership that this goal was finally achieved,” Ahmed Sahid Nasralla said. He also highlighted the increase in SLAJ’s subvention from Le250 million to Le750 million annually, which supports SLAJ’s regional branches, staff salaries and operational expenses.
Despite challenges like economic constraints, online harassment of journalists and legal provisions within the Cybercrime Act, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla expressed optimism about Sierra Leone’s media landscape. “We must continue to push for legislative changes to protect media practitioners and secure SLAJ’s sustainability,” he emphasized.
Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, emphasized the transformative role of President Bio’s administration in Sierra Leone’s media sector. “Every President since independence promised to repeal the Criminal Libel Law, but none fulfilled that promise except President Bio,” Chernor Bah declared.
He praised the media’s evolution, highlighting the rise of bloggers and online platforms that play an influential role in public discourse. “Today, bloggers, digital content creators and social media influencers are part of this room, thanks to President Bio’s efforts to open the media space in an unprecedented way,” he said.
The Minister also referenced the Government’s 91% score on the MCC scorecard for Freedom of Information as a clear testament to President Bio’s commitment to transparency and media empowerment. “This cocktail is not just about celebration; it’s about recognizing the incredible progress we’ve made,” Chernor Bah added.
The event ended with a toast to “Unity, Freedom and Justice,” as President Bio wished attendees a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. His Le2.5 billion subvention pledge, reaffirmation of press freedom and media reforms signal a significant step towards a sustainable and democratic media environment in Sierra Leone.
The Coalition of Healthcare Workers Sierra Leone has issued a strong statement on Wednesday December 11, 2024 expressing deep concerns over the recent actions of the Sierra Leone Health Workers Union. The coalition, which includes representatives from various healthcare associations, emphasizes the necessity for open and transparent dialogue with the Ministry of Health.
In an official release, the coalition criticized the Ministry for reportedly engaging in discussions without the involvement of essential stakeholders, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Sierra Leone (PSSL), Sierra Leone Association of Community Health Workers (SLACHO), Sierra Leone Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (SLAMLS), Sierra Leone Nurses Association (SLNA) and Sierra Leone Midwives Association (SLMA).
The coalition insists that any future negotiations must be conducted with full transparency and the active participation of all relevant healthcare workers. They argue that the exclusion of these groups undermines the principles of inclusivity and accountability, which are vital for effective healthcare governance.
Dr. Eugene B. S. Conteh, the coalition lead and president of PSSL, stated, “We remain open to constructive dialogue and are committed to ensuring that the interests of healthcare workers are prioritized moving forward.”
The coalition’s position reflects a broader call for unity among healthcare professionals in Sierra Leone, urging the Ministry of Health to recognize the importance of their collective knowledge and expertise in discussions that impact their work and the health of the nation.
As the situation develops, the coalition has vowed to continue advocating for engagement that respects the rights and interests of all healthcare workers, ensuring that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes that affect their professions and the communities they serve.
Zanzibar marked a historic milestone on Saturday, December 7th, with the launch of a groundbreaking water-from-air technology aimed at addressing Africa’s water poverty crisis. Dr. Tony Morgan, a keynote speaker at the event, unveiled plans to implement this cutting-edge system in African countries through a strategic partnership with Kevin Nyerere Holdings and the African Union, aligning the project with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for a prosperous and sustainable Africa.
The water collection and purification system is a technological marvel, boasting over 14 patents developed by Infinite and Lobby Mexico. Perfected over 14 years, the system extracts water from the air using advanced condensation technology and purifies it with UV systems to achieve unmatched quality, with a pH rating of 7.26. This innovation, which has been successfully tested on an industrial scale, is designed to transform water accessibility in marginalized communities, offering both immediate health benefits and long-term economic prosperity.
Dr. Tony Morgan emphasized the transformative potential of this technology, describing it as a cornerstone for Africa’s next industrial revolution. “This system is not just about providing clean water—it’s about empowering Africa,” he said. “With support from Kevin Nyerere Holdings, ‘Lobby Mexico’ and the African Union, we are creating a sustainable solution that aligns with the AU’s Agenda 2063 vision of a self-reliant and prosperous Africa.”
The event, held at Kendwa Rocks Resort, brought together African leaders, NGOs and key stakeholders to witness the unveiling of this revolutionary technology. Dr. Tony Morgan highlighted the successful trials conducted at Kendwa Rocks, where the system exceeded expectations in both productivity and water quality.
Water scarcity remains a dire issue across the continent, with over 400 million people lacking access to clean water and 767 million without basic sanitation services. This initiative directly supports the advocacy of H.E. Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone and African Union Ambassador for Water and Sanitation, who has tirelessly championed the fight against water poverty since 2021.
Dr. Tony Morgan’s partnership with Kevin Nyerere Holdings seeks to roll out this innovative water system across African nations, focusing on empowering underserved communities. The collaboration aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which prioritizes sustainable development, technological innovation and industrialization to propel the continent into a new era of progress.
“The 14 patented technologies behind this system make it a game-changer,” Dr. Tony Morgan said. “Together, we are creating an ecosystem where access to clean water not only improves health but also drives industrial and economic growth, securing Africa’s future for generations to come.”
This ambitious project aims to eliminate clean water scarcity within the next decade, demonstrating how technology, collaboration and vision can combine to address one of Africa’s most pressing challenges. The launch in Zanzibar signifies the beginning of a journey toward a brighter, water-secure and industrially empowered Africa.

The Sierra Leone Police have once again demonstrated their steadfast resolve in preserving the nation’s peace and security through prompt, coordinated and professional responses to emerging threats and criminal activities. This commitment was highlighted during the weekly Police Press Briefing held at the Police Headquarters Conference Hall on George Street in Freetown on December 5, 2024. Journalists and representatives from Civil Society Organizations attended the event, which provided critical updates on law enforcement operations across the country.
Addressing the gathering, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Head of Police Media, Brima Kamara, presented a detailed overview of recent developments, emphasizing the efforts of the police in responding to both domestic and cross-border security challenges. In a startling disclosure, ACP Brima Kamara announced that a female suspect, Aminata Innah Daramy, has been declared wanted for her alleged involvement in covert attempts to overthrow the democratically elected Government of President Julius Maada Bio.
ACP Brima Kamara explained that Aminata Innah Daramy was first arrested on December 8, 2023, in connection with the failed coup attempt that took place on November 26, 2023. She was detained for nine days before being released on bail due to insufficient evidence. As part of her bail conditions, she was instructed to report to the Criminal Investigation Department for further questioning. However, renewed intelligence indicating a fresh threat to national security led to her re-arrest on July 18, 2024. She was again granted bail with a mandate to report monthly. Her subsequent failure to honor these reporting requirements and her unknown whereabouts have prompted the police to issue a nationwide alert, urging the public to assist in locating her by reporting any sightings to the nearest police station.
ACP Brima Kamara recounted the events of November 26, 2024, when the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces’ Quick Reaction Forces reportedly clashed with two individuals in a gun battle. The confrontation, which occurred exactly one year after the 2023 attempted coup, resulted in the deaths of Captain Aba Senesie and Captain TL Conteh. The men, who had been on the run since the previous year, were believed to have returned to launch another coup. ACP Brima Kamara confirmed that intelligence linked Aminata Innah Daramy to the renewed plot, though investigations remain ongoing.
Turning to border security, ACP Brima Kamara described a significant breakthrough at the Gbalamuya border post in the Kambia District where police intercepted a vehicle attempting to enter Sierra Leone from Guinea. Acting on reliable intelligence, officers discovered a substantial quantity of contraband drugs hidden inside the vehicle. The driver and two passengers believed to be the owners of the illegal cargo were arrested and are now assisting police investigators. ACP Brima Kamara emphasized that the successful interception was a testament to the increased vigilance of border patrol operations and the strengthened collaboration between intelligence units and operational teams in disrupting transnational criminal networks.
In a separate and equally disturbing development at the same border post, a woman was apprehended while attempting to cross into Guinea with twelve children under suspicious circumstances. Ten of the children were girls, all believed to be between the ages of thirteen and fifteen. When questioned, the woman claimed she was taking the children to be resettled in Guinea, yet she failed to produce any documentation proving familial ties or legal guardianship. One of the children revealed that their parents had consented to the journey after being assured by the woman that they would be offered better living conditions and access to quality education. ACP Brima Kamara described the situation as deeply troubling, pointing to a likely case of child trafficking. The children have since been placed in protective care while investigations continue to identify any additional perpetrators and determine the full scope of the operation.
Meanwhile, in the eastern part of Freetown, police made significant strides in maintaining internal security through the arrest of four suspected armed robbers. The arrests took place during routine night patrols when the suspects were observed behaving suspiciously. Although no robberies had yet been reported, the timely intervention of the patrol teams prevented any potential attacks. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to face prosecution in court.
In concluding the briefing, ACP Brima Kamara reaffirmed the Sierra Leone Police’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the country’s peace, security, and constitutional integrity. He encouraged citizens to stay vigilant and collaborate closely with law enforcement by reporting suspicious behavior in their communities. ACP Brima Kamara stressed that national security is a collective responsibility and that the protection of lives and property depends on the shared commitment of both the authorities and the general public.
The session concluded with a dynamic question and answer period, during which members of the media and civil society raised critical issues and sought clarifications. Senior police officers responded comprehensively, further reinforcing the force’s commitment to transparency, public accountability and adherence to the rule of law in their ongoing efforts to uphold peace and justice throughout Sierra Leone.
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MOICE) will today and tomorrow, December 11 and 12, 2024 host the highly anticipated Salone Civic Festival. The two-day event to be held at the front lawn of Youyi Building in Freetown aims to bring the Government closer to its citizens through interactive engagements and cultural displays.
The festival will serve as a platform for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Offices of the President, Vice President, First Lady and Chief Minister, to provide updates on the Government’s Big Five agenda and its progress over the past year. At the heart of the event is the launch of the Civic Education Strategy, which outlines six key pillars: Love Salone, Feed Salone, Clean Salone, Heal Salone, Digitize Salone and Salone For We All. The strategy aims to foster responsible, productive citizenship in Sierra Leone.
Throughout the two-day festival, attendees will enjoy panel discussions, exhibitions, public engagements and cultural performances. These activities are designed to promote national unity, civic pride and active citizenship, encouraging citizens to engage with Government Ministries at their respective booths. Representatives will be available to address questions and provide information about the implementation of the Big Five agenda.
Cultural pride and heritage will also take center stage at the festival, with music, art, film and fashion showcasing the country’s rich traditions. The event will encourage citizens to play an active role in national development and to support the goals of the Civic Education Strategy.
In addition to the public festivities, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education will unveil its new website alongside those of other Ministries. This initiative aims to increase public access to vital civic information and improve transparency in Government operations. Presentations will highlight key achievements in areas such as mining, local content development, infrastructure, agriculture and digital transformation.
A massive outdoor stage will host live entertainment throughout the festival, including music, poetry, fashion and exhibitions, ensuring a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere. The main indoor event, held at the Miatta Conference Center, will focus on presentations and discussions regarding the Big Five agenda, accessible only by invitation. However, the outdoor activities will be open to the public and free of charge. Additionally, live coverage of the event will be available, allowing a broader audience to engage virtually through social media updates, interviews and press releases managed by a dedicated media team.
The festival is expected to attract a diverse audience, including youth, media practitioners, artists, filmmakers, Government officials and the general public. Ministries will use the event to showcase their contributions to national progress and empower citizens to understand, appreciate and support the Government’s efforts.
The Salone Civic Festival marks the beginning of a new era of civic responsibility and unity in Sierra Leone, bridging the communication gap between the Government and its citizens. Through this event, Sierra Leone will embark on a journey toward greater national cohesion and active civic participation.
