NP (SL): Pioneering Customer Care, Employment & Economic Growth

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

NP (SL) Limited, a wholly indigenous petroleum company in Sierra Leone, continues to redefine customer care, economic empowerment and regional influence. Renowned as the “Pacesetter in Customer Care,” the company exemplifies the transformative potential of local ownership, strategic planning and service excellence. Its unwavering commitment to quality and reliability has solidified its position as the most customer-friendly player in Sierra Leone’s petroleum industry.

A recent nationwide survey reaffirmed NP (SL)’s status as one of the most successful and trusted homegrown enterprises. Respondents praised the company for its dependable service delivery, especially its role in averting fuel shortages that can disrupt social and economic activities. By maintaining a steady supply of petrol, diesel, kerosene and other essential petroleum products, NP (SL) has built a strong customer base, fostering trust and loyalty among Sierra Leoneans.

NP (SL) goes beyond fuel provision to address Sierra Leone’s pressing unemployment challenge. By prioritizing the recruitment of Sierra Leoneans at all operational levels, the company has become a leading job creator. This local employment strategy supports household income generation and contributes to the country’s economic stability. Industry stakeholders have recognized NP (SL) as a vital partner in poverty reduction and sustainable development.

An acclaimed Economist lauded NP (SL) for its successful implementation of the Local Content Policy, describing it as a “living example of how national policies can drive socio-economic progress.” He noted that it is rare to see an indigenous company employing locals at every operational level. NP (SL)’s approach highlights the potential of homegrown enterprises to foster capacity building, employment and sustainable development.

NP (SL)’s strategic expansion has further cemented its industry leadership. The establishment of additional Filling Stations across Sierra Leone has enhanced fuel accessibility for consumers in both urban and rural areas. This expansion aligns with NP (SL)’s mission to bring essential services closer to communities while maintaining competitive pricing. The Petroleum Regulatory Authority (PRA) has consistently praised NP (SL) for its operational efficiency and its critical role in ensuring fuel availability.

Given that fuel shortages often become politically sensitive issues in Sierra Leone, NP (SL)’s proactive measures to ensure a consistent fuel supply have stabilized the nation’s fuel supply chain. This stability supports businesses, commuters and households, thereby contributing to the country’s economic resilience.

NP (SL)’s commitment to innovation extends beyond fuel distribution. The company has introduced the NP Gas Cooker, a cleaner and safer alternative to traditional cooking methods. Available at NP outlets nationwide, the gas cooker provides a cost-effective and environmentally friendly cooking option. It reduces dependence on coal and wood, promoting healthier living conditions for Sierra Leonean households.

In the digital space, NP (SL) has transformed customer experience through cashless payment systems. The introduction of Smart Cards and, more recently, the Energy Pass Card, has revolutionized payment at NP service stations. These cashless solutions enable customers to purchase fuel conveniently, with real-time balance updates, nationwide access and offline functionality. The Energy Pass Card, in particular, offers unmatched convenience, boosting customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

NP (SL) has expanded its operations beyond Sierra Leone’s borders, establishing a strong presence in neighboring West African countries, including Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast and The Gambia. By exporting its business model and operational expertise, NP (SL) has become a regional powerhouse in the petroleum sector. This cross-border growth has elevated Sierra Leone’s standing in the sub-region, portraying the company as a symbol of indigenous business excellence.

The company’s regional expansion has not only contributed to job creation in host countries but also fostered economic cooperation and integration within West Africa. This success story illustrates how indigenous firms can achieve sustainable growth beyond national borders.

NP (SL) plays a critical role in Sierra Leone’s domestic revenue generation. As one of the country’s largest taxpayers, the company makes substantial contributions to the National Revenue Authority (NRA). This financial support enables the Government to fund key development projects, including infrastructure, health and education. Successive Governments have acknowledged NP (SL) as a key partner in Sierra Leone’s socio-economic development.

The company’s tax contributions provide the Government with much-needed revenue for national development initiatives. By supporting the Government’s fiscal stability, NP (SL) demonstrates how indigenous businesses can drive economic transformation and sustainable development.

In a highly competitive industry, NP (SL) continues to stand tall as a results-driven organization that prioritizes integrity, professionalism and customer care. From its role as a reliable provider of fuel to its contributions to employment, revenue generation and regional trade, NP (SL) has become a symbol of national pride. Its ability to balance profitability with corporate social responsibility serves as a model for other local businesses.

NP (SL), as Sierra Leone’s premier petroleum marketing company, is committed to continuous improvement. Its focus on customer satisfaction, operational excellence and community development reflects its long-term vision of creating sustainable growth. Through bold strategies, local capacity building and community-oriented initiatives, NP (SL) exemplifies how indigenous companies can thrive in global markets while driving national development.

The petroleum marketing company is a shining example of how local ownership, innovation and strategic planning can yield transformative results. Its steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction, employment creation and service excellence has cemented its reputation as a national icon. By leading on multiple fronts, including regional expansion, digital transformation and corporate social responsibility, NP (SL) has become Sierra Leone’s undisputed leader in the petroleum sector.

Justice Momoh Jah Stevens Sentences George Adams to 150 Years for Role in 2023 Coup Attempt

By Alvin Lansana Kargbo

Justice Momoh Jah Stevens of the High Court of Sierra Leone has sentenced George Adams to 150 years imprisonment for treason, misprision of treason and murder, stemming from the alleged failed coup attempt in November 26 2023. The sentences, which are to be served consecutively, were handed down following the unanimous guilty verdict by a jury.

George Adams received 75 years imprisonment for treason, 5 years for misprision of treason and 70 years for murder. These sentences are to be served separately, not concurrently, as ordered by the court.

It was outlined during the trial that George Adams, between November 11 and 26, 2023, conspired with unidentified individuals to overthrow the Sierra Leonean Government through unlawful means. Evidence was also presented showing that George Adams and his co-conspirators planned to seize key military installations, including the 5th Infantry Battalion Headquarters at Wilberforce Barracks and the 3rd Infantry Brigade Headquarters, as well as the Sierra Leone Correctional Centers in Freetown.

It was further revealed that George Adams and his associates forcibly broke into both the Male and Female Correctional Centers in Freetown, unlawfully releasing inmates. This violent act, prosecutors argued, was part of a broader scheme to destabilize the country and establish control.

George Adams was also found guilty of concealing treasonous activities by individuals such as Amadu Koita and Captain Jalloh, despite being aware of their plans. This omission, categorized as misprision of treason, earned him a separate five-year sentence.

Additionally, there is a murder charge against George Adams related to the killing of Obi Isaac Johnson on November 26, 2023, at the Pademba Road Correctional Center. This crime, prosecuted under the amended Offenses Against the Persons Act of 1861, reflected the abolition of the death penalty as per the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2022. George was sentenced to 70 years for this heinous act.

In delivering the sentence, Justice Momoh Jah Stevens emphasized the severity of George Adams’s actions, describing them as an affront to Sierra Leone’s democracy and a grave betrayal of national trust. The court’s decision sends a strong message that subversive activities and violence will not be tolerated under the rule of law.

SLCAA DG Calls for Stronger Collaboration at ICAO Security Week 2024

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), Madam Musayeroh Barrie, has emerged as a key voice at the ongoing ICAO Security Week 2024, which began on Monday, December 9, 2024 in Muscat, Oman. The event, organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Oman, celebrates 50 years of Annex 17 on Aviation Security under the theme: “Sustainable Future of Aviation Through Security.”

Madam Musayeroh Barrie, invited as a distinguished panelist, has emphasized the need for sustainable aviation security, focusing on collaboration, innovation and leadership to tackle emerging challenges in the sector.

In her remarks, she highlighted the complexities of aviation security, describing it as fragile yet essential. She also underscored that sustainable security requires consistent risk assessment and strong partnerships between state security entities and aviation authorities.

“Aviation security is primarily about preventing intentional harmful actions, which makes it difficult to predict and counter. To succeed, we must strengthen collaboration, invest in behavioral detection techniques and embrace continuous training,” she noted.

The Director General stressed that aviation security is not solely about technology but also relies heavily on the human element. “While automation and technology are critical, the human factor remains irreplaceable. We need well-trained personnel who are motivated and equipped to handle evolving threats,” she explained.

Madam Musayeroh Barrie has also been vocal about the role of leadership in aviation security. She urged global leaders to set an example by complying with stringent security screenings, emphasizing that even minor oversights could have catastrophic consequences.

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment by adhering to the same security measures as everyone else. Their actions set the tone for the effectiveness of aviation security protocols,” she said.

Additionally, Madam Musayeroh Barrie called for public awareness campaigns to foster a culture of security consciousness. She believes that security is a shared responsibility that requires active participation from all stakeholders, including passengers.

As a staunch advocate of international compliance, she highlighted the importance of adhering to ICAO’s Annex 17 standards, which set the baseline for aviation security globally. She pointed out that Sierra Leone, like all nations, must prioritize implementing these measures to ensure safe and secure air travel.

“ICAO provides guidance, but it is the responsibility of individual states to implement these standards effectively. No country can afford to be left behind in this global effort,” she remarked.

She also emphasized the interconnectedness of the global aviation industry. “Flights originating in Sierra Leone could easily end up in the UK or the US, which underscores the need for consistency and trust in our security systems,” she explained.

In addressing the need for adaptability, she advocated for unpredictable security operations to prevent vulnerabilities from being exploited. She also called for frequent vulnerability assessments involving all stakeholders to address risks comprehensively.

“Security must evolve with the threats we face. The element of unpredictability is crucial to staying ahead of potential risks,” she added.

As ICAO Security Week 2024 progresses, Madam Musayeroh Barrie’s insights and leadership reaffirm Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing global aviation security. Her call for collaboration, innovation and adherence to international standards has resonated with aviation leaders worldwide.

“Security is not a choice; it is an obligation to protect lives, ensure public confidence and maintain the integrity of the global aviation network,” Madam Musayeroh Barrie concluded.

Baptist Convention Sierra Leone Inaugurates Primary Eye Centre in Mongo, Falaba District

By Foday Moriba Conteh

As part of their efforts towards addressing the critical need for accessible and affordable eye care in rural communities in the country, the Baptist Convention Sierra Leone (BCSL), in collaboration with Christian Blind Mission (CBM) and the Ministry of Health, has on Saturday 7th December, 2024 inaugurated a Primary Eye Centre in Mongo, Falaba District, a milestone project that promises to deliver essential eye care services to residents of Mongo and the entire Falaba District, Northern Sierra Leone.

Welcoming the gathering, the Paramount Chief of Mongo Chiefdom expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Baptist Convention Sierra Leone (BCSL) for inaugurating the Primary Eye Centre in the chiefdom. He described the initiative as not only significant but also exceptionally timely.

The Paramount Chief highlighted the challenges previously faced by residents of Mongo and its surrounding areas, who had to travel to Freetown for eye care services. This journey, he noted, incurred significant financial costs and posed great inconvenience. “With the establishment of this Primary Eye Centre, those burdens will now be a thing of the past,” he remarked.

He further assured the gathering that the residents of Mongo Chiefdom would prioritize the safety and proper utilization of the facility to ensure it serves the community effectively and benefits future generations.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Joseph S. Fornah, Executive President of the BCSL, described the event as a transformative moment for the region. “This centre is more than a building; it is a beacon of hope for individuals struggling with preventable blindness and visual impairments. It symbolizes the faithfulness of God and the power of partnerships,” he said.

Dr. Joseph S. Fornah highlighted the holistic mission of the BCSL, which seeks to address not only spiritual needs but also the physical, social and emotional well-being of communities. The Mongo Primary Eye Centre is a practical demonstration of this mission, following the recent commissioning of a similar facility in Kamakwie, Karene District.

The Primary Eye Centre will offer cataract screenings, treatment for common eye conditions and referrals for advanced care, prioritizing respect and compassion for every patient.

Global statistics reveal that at least 2.2 billion people worldwide experience vision impairment, with nearly half of these cases preventable or treatable. Dr. Joseph S. Fornah emphasized the significance of this centre in bridging the gap for underserved populations, particularly in rural areas where financial and geographical barriers often limit access to care.

He expressed gratitude to CBM for its commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities and to the Ministry of Health for ensuring the initiative aligns with national health priorities. “To all our partners, I say thank you for your belief in this initiative and for joining hands with the BCSL to make it a reality,” he remarked.

As he concluded, Dr. Joseph S. Fornah encouraged the people of Mongo and Falaba District to embrace the centre with gratitude and responsibility. “Let us care for this facility, use its services wisely and continue to advocate for health improvements in our communities,” he urged.

The inauguration was marked by a call for continued collaboration to ensure the sustainability and impact of the centre. Dr. Joseph S.  Fornah’s message was a rallying cry for unity and commitment, emphasizing that the centre stands as a testament to what can be achieved when faith and partnership work hand in hand.

Representing the Deputy Minister II of Health, Dr. Lloyd Harrison-Williams, the Acting Program Manager of the National Eye Health Program (NEHP), delivered the keynote address, marking the event as a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s efforts to ensure equitable eye care services across all districts.

Dr. Harrison-Williams highlighted the historic achievement of having a functional Government-owned eye care facility in every district in the country. He attributed this success to the steadfast support of CBM, the dedication of the BCSL and the tireless efforts of project leaders, including Pastor Alfred Sima Kargbo and a committed team of eye care specialists.

The Primary Eye Centre in Mongo is equipped to address the leading causes of blindness, such as cataracts and glaucoma. Dr. Harrison-Williams emphasized the critical need for early diagnosis and treatment, particularly for glaucoma, often referred to as the “Silent Thief of Sight” due to its asymptomatic onset until advanced stages.

He urged residents to take advantage of the centre’s services, including annual eye checks, as early detection can prevent irreversible blindness and identify systemic conditions like hypertension and diabetes that affect eye health.

Dr. Harrison-Williams praised the skilled personnel at the centre, including Pastor Titus Turay, one of the nation’s top ophthalmic specialists, who has been appointed as the centre’s lead. He assured the community that referrals for complex cases would be promptly managed and plans are underway to organize surgical camps at the centre to reduce the burden of traveling to urban areas for procedures.

He also noted that several local healthcare providers, like Mary Thoronka, have expressed interest in ophthalmology training, a move aligned with NEHP’s long-term goal to establish sustainable and equitable eye care services nationwide. Efforts are being made to integrate ophthalmology training into university curricula, ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified professionals.

Dr. Harrison-Williams encouraged the Falaba District Council, private sector stakeholders and philanthropists to support the centre, making the working environment conducive for staff. He emphasized the importance of community collaboration in maintaining the facility and utilizing its services effectively.

In alignment with the 2024 World Sight Day theme, Dr. Harrison-Williams concluded by urging residents to instill the habit of regular eye checks in children, fostering a culture of proactive eye care.

The inauguration of the Primary Eye Centre in Mongo represents a transformative milestone in delivering quality, inclusive and accessible eye care to residents of Mongo and its surrounding areas. This initiative is set to significantly improve the quality of life for thousands in the region, underscoring the Baptist Convention Sierra Leone’s (BCSL) dedication to holistic community development and well-being.

In an important step toward fostering economic integration, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio reaffirmed his commitment to advancing regional trade liberalization within West Africa during the presentation of the 7th Technical Committee Report on the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) at State House on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

The report was presented by Dr. Olorunsola E. Olowofeso, Director General of the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), during a courtesy visit. The discussions highlighted the importance of removing trade barriers and enhancing intra-regional economic cooperation to drive growth and development across WAMZ member states.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Alpha Ibrahim Sesay, expressed gratitude to President Bio for hosting the WAMZ delegation and for approving Sierra Leone as the venue for the 11th annual Trade Ministers’ Forum. The conference, themed “International Trade Vulnerabilities of WAMZ Member States: Opportunities for Boosting Intra-WAMZ Trade,” reflects the region’s commitment to tackling trade challenges and fostering economic resilience.

The Minister revealed that Sierra Leone’s selection as host follows the successful 10th Forum held in Guinea in 2019. Additionally, Sierra Leone was elected Chair of the 11th Trade Ministers’ Forum, a milestone that underscores the country’s leadership in promoting regional trade initiatives.

Olowofeso, remarked, urging West African leaders to intensify efforts toward removing these barriers.

He also called on President Bio to champion the cause of trade liberalization, emphasizing the need for collective action by heads of state to achieve this shared goal.

In his remarks, President Bio reiterated the transformative potential of intra-regional trade, noting its capacity to boost economic growth, engage the private sector  and strengthen regional cooperation. He emphasized that West Africa must harness the benefits of free trade to remain competitive on the global stage.

“It’s time for West African leaders to translate policies into actionable steps that drive the free movement of trade,” President Bio stated, calling for tangible measures to break down trade barriers.

He also highlighted the importance of private sector involvement in driving regional economic integration. “Strong leadership and unwavering commitment are essential to achieving our collective vision of seamless trade across WAMZ,” the President added.

President Bio assured the WAMZ delegation of his dedication to advancing trade liberalization and pledged to advocate for this agenda with fellow West African leaders. His remarks underscored a collective responsibility to transform policy into progress, fostering an environment where businesses and communities across the region can thrive.
