The Executive Director of Commerce and Mortgage Bank, Velma Labor recalled that in 2016 CMB was granted license which positioned the Bank to better compete in the financial ecosystem. She spoke about the change of name from HFC Mortgage and Savings (Mr. Mortgage) to its current name.

According to the Executive Director, CMB embarked on a digital transformation journey with the objective of becoming the best digital bank in Sierra Leone.

“It is in line with this very objective which is why we are here today partnering with Afrimoney,” she intimated.

She, however, stated that the need for interoperability in ensuring a cashless economy cannot be overemphasized.

“It is against this backdrop we decided to collaborate with Afrimoney to provide our customers with the popular demand for a Bank2Wallet and Wallet2Bank seamless money transfer and payment system using the Afrimoney wallet platform, ” the Executive Director added.

Afrimoney Director, Mattison Obeng-Agyei, expressed joy on behalf of the team for doing business with CMB. He continued that Afrimoney is an easy way to access money from your phone and do transactions to the bank.

Obeng-Agyei continued that it is also the simplest and most conducive ways of doing transactions like before you have to walk into a bank and do transaction of Le20.

According to him, “He said if people can work from home that means people can bank from home and keep business going.”

He furthered that they compete just to work hand in hand in order to satisfy their customers to achieve their better future.

Obeng-Agyei pointed out that some of the banks first think that they are in competition with the mobile money company, but now they have seen the reason that they are just a Mobile money platform.

He said the core products of the banks today do not exist, because they leave the bank to do what the banks are mandated to do and the banks has the best capability to do.

“The banks rely on us to provide technological services that they are able to bring forward, so they can make their existence possible together and satisfy their customers,” he pointed out.

He stated that they always say Customer service, customer care, and love for the customers but said those are services they need to put forward and to collaborate consistently.

He said they are happy for the partnership, and they will stop at nothing to make it possible adding that the best things will be come out if they only innovate maintaining that the bank and the Mobile money organization can only create an impact solidly if they work with each other to create new things.

The Afrimoney Director stated that with your phone you can access your bank account, and do what you want to do with your account. He maintained that the partnership also means that any customer can save any amount of money and use any amount of money at any time.

NP-SL-Ltd Deserves Praise as a Pro-People Business Entity

NP-Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL Ltd)

By Amin Kef-Ranger

NP-SL Ltd deserves praise as a resilient business entity that had been rated as the country’s foremost importer and marketer of petroleum products, which includes petrol, diesel, gas as well as lubricants of various types and is always poised to give its ubiquitous and esteemed customers the best in terms of giving them value in return for money.

The company’s competent and result-oriented Managerial think tank, currently headed by its indefatigable Chief Executive Officer, Kobi Walker, in tandem with the Board of Directors, have always endeavoured to be at the pinnacle of affairs within the petroleum landscape in this country, looking at best options, in order for effective service delivery to be executed timely, excellently, all geared towards enhancing good business relationships. If there is any outstanding feature for which the company is identified with then it is giving customers satisfaction to the fullest which is why it has earned the enviable reputation of ‘1st for Customer Care’.

Prioritizing customer care is considered very paramount out of the strong conviction that the company will be nowhere without its cherished customers.

It is along that line that the company has a customer care unit that primarily interfaces with members of the public. Concerns and recommendations channeled through it are raised in certain management meetings, discussed and the way forward mapped out.

Regarding their customers as priceless jewels, NP-SL Ltd always ensures that to give them optimal satisfaction, value must be derived from their monies spent. It was thinking along that line that prompted the shareholders of the company to replace their old-fashioned pumping machines to calibrated pumping machines of high standard which transparently pump the requisite quantity of petrol or diesel demanded for. Confidence is now high among its customers that they are getting exactly what they are paying for.

Still within the domain of 1st for Customer Care, the company is always in position to enter into payment plans with its reliable and dependable customers including Ministries, Departments and Agencies for fuel and lubricants supplies as long as all the necessary modalities have been put in place. When cognizance is taken of the fact that some of these institutions receive intermittent budgetary allocations then such an arrangement is very significant. Its significance in real terms borders on functional continuity of those institutions as they will be assured of supplies of petroleum products in as much as they keep honouring their obligations.

In this country today, for one to see a successful business entity that is owned mainly by Sierra Leoneans and having a maximum number of indigenes as members of staff is like trying to find a lost needle on the beach, although there are some that could be identified.

For NP-SL Ltd this has been a big achievement as the company is strongly adhering to the country’s Local Content Policy. Making use of local brains has been identified as one of the conduits through which developing countries like Sierra Leone could attain economic empowerment. Correspondingly, if there is a continuation of the colonial mentality that it is only by importing foreign ideas and skills that we will get there then such could be a very sad mistake.

By providing job opportunities for hitherto jobless Sierra Leoneans, NP-SL Ltd continues to help in alleviating poverty by putting monies into pockets which could be utilized to take care of responsibilities.

For those who have not tried NP Gas for the first time it is now time to give it a try. Designed in sizable varying cylinders and sold at various NP Filling Stations, this cooking device has been rated as one of the best that is on offer for sale. NP Gas is safe, user friendly and portable. Trying it will spur you to recommend it to others.

NP Smart Card is now in vogue and is one of the latest technological devices used to purchase petroleum products. Using it has attendant advantages as evident in procuring fuel at any time of the day even during times when monies could not be accessed from banks. It is secured, easy to use and very quick. It is now trending.

To crystallize proposed projects into tangible realities on the ground, Government needs the requisite financial resources to effectively do so and one sure way is from the collection of taxes which is the mandate of the National Revenue Authority (NRA).  NP is indeed one of the big time tax payers in the country and it is very compliant in that direction.

From all indications, it is crystal clear that NP-SL Ltd is here to stay in order to give the best and contribute tremendously to the socio-economic development of the country. Indeed the company is passionate and committed towards attaining those objectives.

Basic Education Minister Announces Major Educational Improvements in 2022 WASSEC Results

Dr Moinina David Sengeh,

By Abubakarr Harding

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Dr Moinina David Sengeh, on the 26th September, 2022 publicly intimated, via the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) 2022 results are now out.

Before announcing the results, the Minister stated that he knows that candidates and parents have been patiently waiting for the day and apologized for the delay in release of results but told all to be rest assured that WAEC and the Ministry are releasing the results well in time for those transitioning and seeking admission into higher and technical institutions for the next academic year.

“This was the largest cohort of examination candidates ever,” the Minister pointed out adding how they wanted to make sure they did due diligence.

The Minister informed the nation that they just returned from the Transforming Education Summit in New York where Sierra Leone’s President, His Excellency Dr Julius Maada Bio was co-chair along with the UN Secretary-General.

He continued that such a global honour comes from the Government’s sustained investments in education and their renewed commitment to keep transforming learning for all.

The Minister revealed that “Transforming Learning for all” is in fact the title of the Ministry’s Education Sector Plan (2022-2026) which will shape all the Government’s interventions over the next five years.

Dr Moinina David Sengeh informed that in New York, President Bio committed to sustaining an investment of  a minimum of 20% in the education sector in addition to the following:

– cut in half the number of out-of-school children of primary school age by 2030, compared to today

– launch an Alliance for Foundational Learning through which they further commit to cutting the rate of learning poverty in half or more by 2030

– commit to preparing students for the future by making climate education a central component at all levels

– commit to setting measurable targets for skills training and technical education.

He said they are about to  release to candidates the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 2022 conducted by the West African Examination Center.

According to Moinina David Sengeh, there is a lot to be proud of, as a nation, maintaining that before he announces some metrics of interest he wants to remind all of the following impact of the Free Quality School Education that will place the numbers into context:

– When parents save tuition fees, examination fees, and costs of core text books, they re-invest it largely in the education of their children.

– When Government ensures that 3.1 million core textbooks in English and Maths are in the hands of our secondary school children, they learn.

– When Government ensures that it recruits and trains more teachers, increasing their salaries 3 times in 5 years, they perform better.

– When Government makes learning materials like past papers and other curriculum content freely available to students using digital technology, we see improved learning.

– When Government invests in building hundreds of classrooms, providing thousands of furniture and making schools safer, ensuring our children can go to school and return home safer through school transportation, those children feel safer and learn better.

– When Government reviews all its education curriculum, making it fit of purpose, our children become more competitive globally.

– When Government engages students, teachers, parents, and the community in the provision of a more inclusive and equitable education, quality improves for all.

The Minister stated that the aforementioned are but a few commitments the Government has sustained over the last four years adding that while they are not surprised at the outcomes, and the jump is not spontaneous (that is we have been seeing upward trends over the past years) the Government is hopeful that it has more to do as they seek to transform the country through education.

In giving Key highlights the Minister stated that:  The number of candidates sitting WASSCE has increased by 479% (2018-22) reaching a record of 186,695 students for whom results have been released to the MBSSE. The rest, he said, have been withheld adding that schools should follow WAEC protocols with any Grievance Redress.

The Minister disclosed that for the second year in a row, there are more female students than male students sitting WASSCE, that the pass rate for individual papers has climbed from 64% in 2021 to 77% in 2022; the number of students obtaining the benchmark 5 credits in a single sitting has increased by 1863% between 2018 and 2022.

He stated that the top student sat and passed all 8 of his subjects with an average grade of 1.63, i.e. something better than a B2, the top student was a girl and a joint second was also a girl.

The Minister also intimated that the top school saw 100% of its candidates obtain the benchmark 5 credits as well as all meeting the minimum requirements for direct entry to university degree programmes, with an average grade of 2.33, i.e. approximately a B2.

He claimed that the number of candidates achieving direct university degree programme entry requirements  by obtaining 5 credits including a credit in English Language and/or Mathematics in a single sitting has increased by an amazing 1,781% over the period 2018:2022.

“In 2022 more than 108,000 students obtained the requirements, which is more than the previous 5 years combined,” he said mentioning how more females than males obtained those requirements

He also announced that the pass rates for English Language and Mathematics are 63% and 90% respectively and that Males slightly outperformed females in English Language nationally but in mathematics the opposite was true with females outperforming males

The Basic Education Minister told the nation that there remains large variation in performance across subjects revealing that of the twenty subjects with most candidates sitting, Science (Core) had the highest pass rate (95%) and Commerce the lowest (11%)

The further pointed out that there remains a large variation in performance across districts, including in terms of average grade/unit, percentage obtaining 3 and above credits and for obtaining the requirements for entry into a full first degree programme.

With regards the top 10 schools based on average grades, the Minister gave the following:  Kamboi (Lebanese) Senior Secondary School, Kenema , Science World S.S.S., 16W Blackhall Road on Ashorbie Corner  in Freetown, Providence International Senior High School in Freetown , the Hammond Int. As Cost Of Living Soars, Difficult Times Lie Ahead…

President Julius Maada Bio

By Ranger

In reaction to the unprecedented rise in the cost of living that has eroded the purchasing power of millions of people living on or below the UN poverty of $2 a day, politics is no longer the answer to their problem, as their problem is how to earn more to meet their daily survival needs.

Towards this, sympathetic President Bio New Direction Government that promised the nation in 2018 to address the most fundamental existential need of the people – bread and butter – now finds itself between the rock and a hard place in fulfilling that promise as inflation, a falling Leone and ever rising market prices make fulfilling that promise look like chasing a mirage in the Sahara desert.

True to its commitment to addressing the needs of the people, the Government has since the Corona pandemic hit the world in 2020 being putting in place proactive economic controls and humanitarian packages to cushion the effects on the poor and vulnerable.

Sadly, the result has been like trying to block a broken levee. In this latest effort to stem the flowing tide of inflation, the President last weekend announced 25 percent increase for pensioners and public sector workers. It also announced 30 % subsidy on fuel and food. Without wanting to dampen the Government’s effort, we know from recent past events that this too will not help reduce cost of living.

Wages harmonization was a step in the right direction to correct the gross inequality in wages between less than 1 percent of the work force and the vast majority that earn less than Le2M per month.

Thus, if you give 25 percent increase to someone earning above Le20M a month and one earning less than Le2M a month, you have made the former richer. Therefore what continues to fuel the growing hardship in this country is that huge percentage of national revenue goes towards wages and salaries of  the privileged few and frivolous Government expenditure at a time when austerity should be the way out.

Thus, as long as the Government continues to spend far more than it earns, there is no way that it can stem the tide of inflation which directly affects cost of living.

NTB’s General Manager Continues to Solidly Market Sierra Leone’s Tourism Potentials

National Tourist Board (NTB)

By Abubakarr Harding

The National Tourist Board (NTB) is undoubtedly one of the major functioning entities that have been contributing immensely and meaningfully to the nation’s economy but its activities are little known of which could be attributed to the fact that since it is just an arm of the Tourism Ministry, it is the latter that always take the praises when major developments are achieved.

It must be noted that the National Tourist Board is a semi-autonomous body which is the professional arm of the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and working to establish the country’s tourist industry in order to enhance socio-economic development especially with regards eco-tourism.

The National Tourist Board, under the dynamic steering of its result-oriented and highly professional General Manager, Fatmata Carew, has been working tremendously over the years to position the country’s tourism sector at a vantage position by making it very much attractive to foreigners who in the past showed and now have interests in exploring the potentials of the tourist industry. In that direction the NTB has made meaningful inroads in making Sierra Leone very conspicuous.

The Board has been working closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, to ensure that the Government’s programmes, agendas and strategic plans and policies are successfully rolled out.

Through the stewardship of the General Manager, her passion to see things done the right ways, her networking and her sense of patriotism the National Tourist Board has been hugely contributing to rebranding the country.

Worthy of note is the symbiotic relationship that exists between the Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourist Board as an Agency of the former.

Working in synergy with the Minister of Tourism and her Deputy, Madam Fatmata Carew has demonstrated leadership in repositioning the sector, now making headway in terms of product development, with nine touristic sites under development by the EIF and the World Bank.

Under her leadership style and regardless of the constraints militating against its performance, the National Tourist Board has been engrossed with the implementation of the UNDP and Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) programmes and their international programmes.

She was very instrumental in making Domestic Tourism fashionable in the country and in that respect the Board has been very proactive in building the infrastructure to support it.

Successfully, through her relentless strides, the National Tourist Board has participated in setting up both local and international platforms geared towards marketing Sierra Leone as a tourism destination.

The General Manager of the National Tourist Board, Fatmata Carew, joined NTB in April 2005 and served as Marketing and Public Relations Officer and in 2009 Marketing and PR Manager. She became Deputy GM in 2015, following public recruitment process. She holds a post-graduate degree from the Institute of Public Administration & Management (USL) – Msc, Development Management – 2009 – 2011 and a BA Honors, Political Science from FBC – 2000 – 2004.

Her industry knowledge covers the fields of: Marketing, Public Relations, Management, Marketing Strategy, Social Media Marketing, Customer Service, Leadership. She also acquired a Diploma in Destination Marketing in 2008 and a Diploma in Sustainable Tourism Development and Promotion in 2013.

Royal Air Maroc Made Emergency Landing in Monrovia after Take-Off

Royal Air Maroc

By Alhaji MB Jalloh

Royal Air Maroc nearly caught fire 30 minutes after take-off on Friday, 23rd September, 2022 from Lungi International Airport (FNA) to Casablanca.

The pilots were forced to make an emergency landing at Monrovia’s Roberts International Airport.

The Boeing 737 – 800 aircraft took off at 5:30 am and encountered technical problems less than an hour into the journey. That sent the passengers into a panic, with some screaming and others praying.

All the passengers on board landed safely and no injuries were reported.

Aircraft maintenance technicians in Monrovia were able to fix the problem and the aircraft continued its journey. Five hours later, it landed safely at Terminal 2 of the Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca in the early afternoon.

After landing, a senior airline staff reportedly told the passengers that: “This type of incident is extremely rare, adding, Royal Air Maroc crews are regularly trained to manage such abnormal situations.”

The newly posted Royal Air Maroc Country Manager in Freetown who was also in the flight could not be reached to talk on the incident; as his telephone lines were all switched off. But a local staff at the airline’s Wilkinson Road Office in the West End of Freetown who preferred anonymity says the airline regrets any inconvenience the incident caused to its passengers and assures the travelling public of its full commitment to safety of its passengers.
