The Management of Freetown International Airport (FIA), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), has successfully completed a rigorous training program for 65 Aerodrome Fire Fighting Personnel. The training, which was conducted on Friday, March 7, 2025, focused on Basic and Structural Fire Fighting and is in full compliance with SLCAR Part 14A standards.
The goal of the training was to enhance the fire-fighting team’s response capabilities, proficiency in equipment use, physical fitness, communication and teamwork, all of which are critical in ensuring the safety of operations at the Aerodrome. The training also meets the requirements of SLCAR Part 14A, ensuring that the fire-fighting personnel are fully equipped to respond to any structural fire incidents within the airport precincts.
The benefits of the Aerodrome Fire Fighting training are numerous and include:
- Refresher training for experienced firefighters on their roles and responsibilities.
- Keeping personnel updated on the latest equipment and tools available.
- Enhancing physical and medical fitness levels.
- Improving response capabilities.
- Strengthening communication skills.
- Fostering improved teamwork and coordination.
The training initiative is part of the Director General of SLCAA, Ms. Musayeroh Barrie’s strategic leadership at the Freetown International Airport to align its operations with international aviation standards.
The Aerodrome Fire Fighting personnel were trained in both basic and structural fire fighting techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared for any emergency situation at the airport. With this comprehensive training, it is hoped that when an incident occurs at FIA, fire fighters will be able to respond swiftly, armed with the best equipment and the skills needed to manage the situation effectively.
It must be noted that the primary objective of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) is to save lives during an aircraft accident or incident, particularly by extinguishing fires that may arise immediately following such events or during the rescue operation. The effectiveness of this service depends largely on the quality of training the personnel receive, the readiness of the equipment and the speed at which both can be deployed to the scene.
Ms. Musayeroh Barrie’s leadership continues to bring positive changes to Sierra Leone’s aviation sector. Since her appointment as Director General of SLCAA in August 2023, she has made significant progress in enhancing the country’s aviation safety and security.
Furthermore, following a recent meeting between SLCAA Management and the European Commission in Brussels, there is optimism that Sierra Leone’s improved safety, security and oversight measures will soon result in the country’s removal from the EU aviation blacklist.
