Speaking at the event, Orange Sierra Leone’s General Secretary, Dannetta Younge, reaffirmed the company’s unwavering commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). She stated that the donation aligns with one of Orange Sierra Leone’s core values—Care—alongside Responsibility and Boldness. Younge emphasized that the company’s CSR ambition is deeply rooted in its mission to support the communities in which it operates, positioning Orange as more than just an investor in Sierra Leone.

She further lauded the Ministry of Social Welfare’s dedication to promoting inclusivity and upholding the rights of persons living with disabilities. She assured that Orange Sierra Leone would continue to support meaningful initiatives that contribute to the well-being of disadvantaged groups across the country.

In her keynote address, the Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Melrose Karminty, expressed sincere appreciation to Orange Sierra Leone for its continued support of social welfare initiatives. She noted that since her appointment, this was her first engagement with a mobile network operator (MNO) that had proactively undertaken a CSR project benefiting persons with disabilities. The Minister praised Orange Sierra Leone for its strong sense of responsibility and humanitarian commitment, describing the donation as a tangible demonstration of corporate goodwill and social impact.

The event concluded with a symbolic handing over of the tarpaulins to representatives of disabled groups, marking another milestone in Orange Sierra Leone’s mission to enhance social development and provide relief to vulnerable communities in the country.

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Parents and guardians should take advantage of the rare and transformative medical opportunity that promises to change the lives of children in Sierra Leone. Choithram Memorial Hospital, in collaboration with the Bintumani Association, is currently encouraging registration for a free pediatric surgical program designed to provide expert treatment to children under fifteen suffering from various medical conditions. With only a limited window remaining before the registration process closes, families must act with urgency to ensure their children receive this life-changing care from a team of highly skilled German surgeons set to perform critical procedures from March 21 to April 4, 2025.

This groundbreaking initiative is dedicated to addressing conditions such as neck fistulas and cysts, soft tissue tumors, sequelae of thermal injuries, malformations of the urogenital and gastrointestinal tract, hernias, hypospadias, undescended testes, abdominal wall deformities and minor contractures. Every child registered will be assessed through a screening process to determine eligibility, ensuring that those in dire need receive the specialized treatment required to improve their quality of life. With the program being entirely free of charge, this is an unprecedented opportunity for families who may otherwise struggle to afford such advanced medical procedures.

Choithram Memorial Hospital’s Management has underscored the significance of this initiative, noting that the team of German pediatric surgeons has been conducting similar medical missions in Sierra Leone since 2010. This year’s program seeks to extend access to critical healthcare, particularly for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. With screenings already underway and demand expected to be high, it is imperative that parents and guardians move swiftly to secure their children’s participation in this vital program before the registration period concludes.

Dr. Gowrinath M. George, Medical Superintendent of Choithram Memorial Hospital, has provided insight into the registration process, explaining that screenings are being conducted at various centers to identify eligible patients. A final list of selected children will be compiled, after which they will be referred to Choithram Memorial Hospital in Freetown for free surgical procedures. While the program covers an extensive range of pediatric conditions, it is important to note that surgeries for hydrocephalus, myelomeningoceles, incomplete backbone closure, clubfoot, esophageal stricture and cleft lip and palate will not be included in this year’s camp.

Since registration officially commenced on February 24, 2025, the response has been overwhelming, reflecting the urgency and necessity of such an initiative. Families interested in securing a place for their children can contact the hospital at +232 76541331 or visit Choithram Memorial Hospital from Monday to Friday for further details. With only a short time remaining, hesitation could mean missing out on a life-altering opportunity.

Harish Agnani, Chief Administrator of the Choithram Group, has reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare services to all Sierra Leoneans. He emphasized that this free pediatric surgical camp is part of Choithram’s ongoing mission to provide accessible medical interventions to those most in need.

The initiative has also received significant support from Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Dr. M. L. Baryoh, whose instrumental role in facilitating collaboration between the Bintumani Association’s German pediatric team and Choithram Memorial Hospital has been invaluable in making this program a reality.

With the registration now ongoing, it is crucial that parents and guardians take decisive action now. This is a chance to secure expert treatment for children who need it most, offering them renewed hope and a healthier future. The impact of this initiative extends far beyond immediate medical care; it represents a commitment to the well-being of Sierra Leone’s children and a testament to the unwavering dedication of Choithram Memorial Hospital and the Bintumani Association to improving healthcare across the nation. Families must not let this opportunity slip away. The time to act is now.

In a groundbreaking development for Sierra Leone’s transportation and energy sectors, NEEV Salone has launched the country’s first-ever fleet of Electric Vehicles (EVs). The unveiling ceremony took place at the NEEV Salone Battery Charging and Swapping Centre, located on 80 Pademba Road in Freetown, marking a major step toward the nation’s green energy transition.

The historic event drew participation from key Government officials, industry stakeholders and environmental advocates, all celebrating the innovative leap in Sierra Leone’s pursuit of sustainable mobility.

Moses Sandy, CEO of NEEV Salone, expressed his enthusiasm for the milestone achievement, emphasizing its significance in positioning Sierra Leone as a leader in renewable energy adoption.

“These electric vehicles can travel up to 600 kilometers on a single charge, offering an affordable and environmentally friendly transportation alternative,” Moses Sandy stated. He further revealed that the initiative has already generated over 200 jobs for Sierra Leoneans, with plans underway to establish a local EV manufacturing plant within the next seven months.

He also credited the Government’s support in promoting renewable energy, stating, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to God Almighty, my dedicated team and the Government for their unwavering commitment to Sierra Leone’s development.”

The Director of Climate Change at State House, Fuad Yusuf Bangura, highlighted how the introduction of electric vehicles aligns with Sierra Leone’s climate action agenda.

“Climate change is a pressing reality and carbon emissions are a leading contributor,” Fuad Yusuf Bangura pointed out. “These electric cars will help reduce Sierra Leone’s carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Emmanuella Sandy, Deputy CEO and Director of Operations at NEEV Salone, outlined the economic benefits of EV adoption, noting the significant cost savings businesses and individuals can achieve.

“Instead of spending on fuel daily, users will only need to charge their vehicles twice a week,” she explained. “This translates into substantial financial savings while simultaneously reducing environmental pollution.”

She further announced a strategic partnership between NEEV Salone and the University of Sierra Leone’s Engineering Department to enhance research and development in green energy solutions.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Trade and Industry, Ibrahim Alpha Sesay, commended NEEV Salone for its pioneering efforts in transforming Sierra Leone’s transport sector.

“The introduction of electric vehicles is in alignment with the President’s Big Five Agenda and will significantly contribute to economic growth and national GDP,” the Minister stated.

He underscored that the establishment of a local EV manufacturing plant would generate numerous employment opportunities while reducing the country’s dependence on costly fuel imports, ultimately benefiting both the economy and the environment.

The Trade Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding EV infrastructure, including nationwide charging stations and maintenance facilities.

“We will collaborate with NEEV Salone to create a conducive business environment, ensuring the sustained growth of the electric vehicle sector beyond Freetown,” Ibrahim Alpha Sesay affirmed.

The newly launched electric vehicles boast an impressive range of 600 kilometers per charge, with low operating costs and zero emissions. Equipped with modern, user-friendly technology, these EVs present a cost-effective and sustainable transportation solution for Sierra Leone.

With NEEV Salone spearheading the shift towards cleaner energy and strong Government backing, the initiative is set to revolutionize the country’s transport industry; creating jobs, lowering carbon emissions and contributing to the global fight against climate change.

GOLA-REAP Project Launched to Foster Peace and Sustainability along Sierra Leone-Liberia Border

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a bold step towards strengthening peace, sustainable livelihoods and cross-border cooperation, the Governments of Liberia and Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the United Nations (UN) representations in both countries, officially launched the GOLA-REAP (Resilience, Empowerment, Access and Peacebuilding) project. The launch event, held on Friday February 28, 2025 at Bo Waterside, Liberia, brought together Government officials, UN representatives, the Mano River Union Secretariat, local authorities, civil society organizations and community leaders.

The GOLA-REAP project aims to enhance social cohesion, improve border management, promote local governance and support climate-smart agriculture to mitigate conflict risks while fostering economic resilience. The project focuses on the Gola Forest Landscape, a shared ecosystem between Liberia and Sierra Leone that plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, local livelihoods  and regional trade.

Recognizing the need for strengthened cross-border collaboration, GOLA-REAP is backed by the United Nations Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), the UN’s primary financial instrument for conflict prevention and peacebuilding. The fund supports joint UN interventions that integrate development, humanitarian aid, human rights and peacebuilding efforts.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Morie Lengor, underscored the project’s alignment with national development initiatives.

“Sierra Leone’s 5 Big Game Changers and Feed Salone initiatives are more than just projects; they are a call to action for our communities to take ownership of sustainable resource management. By strengthening cross-border collaboration, we are fostering peace, resilience and economic empowerment for the people of Sierra Leone and Liberia,” he stated.

UN Resident Coordinator for Sierra Leone, Seraphine Wakana, acknowledged Liberia’s role in hosting the event and emphasized the region’s strategic importance.

“Grand Cape Mount County plays a crucial role in regional peacebuilding efforts, essential for the development of both countries,” Seraphine Wakana remarked. “The boundary between Sierra Leone and Liberia signifies a shared past, present and future—a future we must shape together. Importantly, the boundary represents shared peace.”

The implementation of GOLA-REAP will be led jointly by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the World Food Programme (WFP), in close partnership with national Governments and local authorities. Regional institutions such as the Mano River Union (MRU), civil society organizations and community representatives will play a pivotal role in the project’s execution.

The initiative has received widespread support from policymakers and peace advocates, who recognize its potential to sustain peace and security in the region. Edward K. Mulbah, Liberia’s Deputy Minister for Research and Development Planning, highlighted the project’s resilience-building aspects.

“The Gola Forest is a shared heritage and a pillar of peace, security and economic resilience between our two nations. This initiative affirms our commitment to sustainable development and regional cooperation,” Edward K.Mulbah emphasized.

GOLA-REAP builds on the success of the PBF’s previous cross-border peacebuilding projects implemented between 2021 and 2024 in Sierra Leone and Guinea. Under these initiatives, WFP and IOM worked with Governments to strengthen civil institutions and develop evidence-based policies for conflict resolution, particularly addressing tensions between cattle herders and crop farmers in border areas.

By fostering collaboration between local communities, forest rangers, border authorities and national Governments, the project aims to prevent and resolve community conflicts while advancing sustainable resource management in the Gola Forest Landscape.

UN Resident Coordinator for Liberia, Christine N. Umutoni, reinforced the project’s transformative vision.

“Through GOLA-REAP, we have a unique opportunity to make the Gola Forest a lasting legacy; not just as a protected area, but as a model of cross-border peacebuilding, cooperation and shared prosperity,” Christine N. Umutoni stated. “Let us seize this moment, work together and turn our shared vision into reality.”

Local leaders echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of conservation and community engagement. Lawrence V. Sherbo, Commissioner of Liberia’s Kongba District, voiced a commitment to environmental protection.

“This forest is our heritage,” Lawrence Sherbo declared. “We must protect it for generations to come.”

The launch of GOLA-REAP marks a critical milestone in cross-border peacebuilding, setting a foundation for regional stability, sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

This landmark event, held in commemoration of World NGO Day, was themed: “Empowering Communities for Sustainable Development” and underscored the invaluable contributions of NGOs to national progress.

Speaking at the launch, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh lauded the tireless efforts of NGOs in Sierra Leone and globally, emphasizing their pivotal role in improving lives through collaboration with the Government, development partners, the private sector and local communities. He urged NGOs and development partners to reflect on their strategies in the face of dwindling development aid financing, calling for innovative approaches that ensure sustainability and community ownership of interventions.

“This event is not only about recognition but also about redefining how NGOs can be more impactful in a rapidly changing world,” Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh stated. He encouraged organizations to capitalize on emerging global trends, strengthen partnerships and prioritize strategic planning to maximize their impact.

The NGO Week, organized by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO), served as a platform to celebrate and enhance the effectiveness of NGOs operating in Sierra Leone. The initiative aimed to foster collaboration between NGOs and the Government while reinforcing transparency and accountability in the sector.

Earlier, in her opening address, the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Madam Kenyeh Barlay highlighted the Government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with NGOs. She noted that the recognition of NGO Week marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s development trajectory and ensures that the contributions of NGOs are acknowledged and integrated into national planning processes.

She further reiterated the Government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for NGOs to thrive.

As part of the celebration, the Government launched the NGO Gazette, which formally registers and authenticates international and local NGOs operating in Sierra Leone. This move aims to enhance transparency and accountability within the sector.
