Choithram Hospital to Host Free Surgical Camp with German Medical Specialists

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Choithram Memorial Hospital, a leading private healthcare facility in Sierra Leone, is set to host a free surgical camp from January 9 to January 23, 2024. This charitable initiative is spearheaded by Dr. M. L. Baryoh, the Sierra Leonean Ambassador to Germany, in collaboration with Interplast Germany.

The hospital administrators confirmed that a team of seasoned German plastic surgeons will provide free consultations and treatments. These specialists, who have been making annual visits to Sierra Leone since 2010, will conduct the surgeries at absolutely no cost to the patients. The camp’s coordination will be expertly managed by Dr. Eric Wongo, a plastic surgeon.

Choithram Hospital has a long-standing tradition of organizing these charitable events, affording quality medical treatment to those unable to bear the costs. Patients suffering from post-burn contractures, hand, feet, or wrist disorders or deformities, hand and feet tumors, and cleft lip and palate are among those eligible for the free services.

The German team, including eight specialists: Dr. Med Lutz Gruhl, Dr. Bernd Heidemann, Dr. Olaf Weigt, Dr. Karolina Lischka, Dr. Franziska von Sievers, Mr. Nikolaus Brunner, Mrs. Andrea Schmidt, and Mrs. Monika Schäfer, is prepared to provide their expertise.

Dr. Gowrinath M. George, the Medical Superintendent of Choithram, expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Dr. M. L. Baryoh for his role in making the camp a reality. “Without Dr. Baryoh’s tireless efforts to bridge the gap between Interplast and Choithram Hospital, this camp would not be possible,” stated Dr. George.

In addition to the free surgical camp, the hospital announced the installation of a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine, which is slated to become operational in the first week of January 2024.

Harish Agnani, the Chief Administrator of the Choithram Group, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality medical care for all, a core principle since the hospital’s inception.

Prospective patients can contact the hospital at +23276541331 to register or visit the hospital on Hill Station in Freetown. Registration is open from December 8, 2023, to December 19, 2023.

Citizens Must Secure Biometric ID Cards to Bolster Safety & Ease Local Transactions

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Sierra Leone is embarking on a transformative journey towards enhanced security and streamlined transactions through a groundbreaking initiative by the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA). The recent introduction of Securitized and Multi-purpose Biometric Identity Cards, complemented by an advanced ID Verification System earlier this year, represents a significant stride towards ensuring citizen safety and simplifying day-to-day dealings across the country.

The core purpose driving this initiative is two-fold: to bolster citizen safety and ease local transactions. These Biometric ID cards, now mandatory at checkpoints nationwide, offer not just identification but a secure repository for personal information, prioritizing individual rights while unlocking access to vital services. Beyond a mere card, these IDs are gateways to a future filled with endless possibilities. The NCRA is steadfast in emphasizing that the national ID card isn’t merely a means of identification; it’s a key to a future where convenience and security reign.

The implementation of this innovative ID system promises citizens seamless and secure transactions, ensuring convenience for every cardholder. Consequently, the NCRA strongly encourages citizens to acquire their National ID Cards from any NCRA branch, underscoring the power and convenience these cards provide in today’s dynamic landscape.

To simplify the application process, citizens are urged to visit specific NCRA Offices and designated Centers strategically located across the nation:

1. NCRA Headquarters: 2 Walpole Street, Freetown.
2. NCRA Office: 23B Off Kingharman Road, Freetown.
3. NCRA Office: Kennedy Street, Freetown.
4. NCRA Branch Office: 230 Lumley Road, Freetown (By the Round & About).
5. NCRA Office: Waterloo along the Freetown High Way (Opposite the Police Station).
6. NCRA Offices: Respective Regional Headquarter Towns of Bo, Kenema, Makeni, and Port Loko.

In a bid to increase accessibility, the NCRA has introduced corporate services tailored for organizations and institutions like Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), Foreign Missions, and Financial Institutions. For comprehensive information on these corporate services, interested parties can contact the following numbers: +232-33-433-333 / +232-30-500-000 / +232-60-000 / +232-78-221-812 or via EMAIL: idverification@ncra.gov.

The introduction of biometric national identity cards underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a safer, more efficient, and accessible environment for all Sierra Leoneans, empowering both individuals and organizations.

AIM Urges Health Ministry to Address FGM on World AIDS Day

On World AIDS Day, Friday December 1, 2023, the Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM) called upon the Health Ministry to incorporate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) into its comprehensive programs. AIM highlights the undeniable link between FGM and the transmission of HIV/AIDS, emphasizing the urgent need for action to protect thousands of women and girls.

Health experts have long established that HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through the piercing of body tissues and blood transfusion from infected individuals. Disturbingly, this parallels the initiation of women and girls into secretive societies where FGM is practiced, creating a perilous breeding ground for the spread of HIV/AIDS.

AIM, a prominent advocate for ending FGM in Sierra Leone, proposes a solution: the introduction of a bloodless rite of passage. This innovative approach allows women to undergo the traditional Bondo or Sande rituals without piercing or bloodshed. The organization urges Government agencies to embrace this “Alternative Rite” to mitigate not only HIV/AIDS but also infant mortality, early marriage, school dropout rates, and other societal challenges impeding women’s empowerment.

According to the Movement, studies consistently reveal the profound, lifelong physical, psychological, and sexual trauma resulting from FGM adding that immediate consequences include excruciating pain and life-threatening blood loss, with a heightened risk of HIV/AIDS or hepatitis transmission when multiple individuals share the same cutting tools. It continued that long-term effects encompass chronic pain, infections, incontinence, and sexual dysfunction, perpetuating a cycle of suffering.

Reflecting on historical practices, AIM says it’s evident that our predecessors endured ailments without understanding their causes, often attributing deaths to supernatural forces. It highlighted that today, scientific advancements demand a reevaluation of traditions endangering health adding how medical scrutiny has exposed the hazards of removing crucial healthy tissues, challenging the preservation of outdated customs.

It urges that as culture evolves, so should our attitudes toward practices condemned by the World Health Organization (WHO) calling on individuals to reject the cutting of women and girls’ clitorises in the name of obsolete cultural norms.

AIM concludes that championing the cause to end FGM and promoting bloodless rites is pivotal in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls.

“Let rationality and common sense guide us toward safeguarding the well-being of future generations,” the Movement admonished.

Unprecedented Absence of Kaffu Bullom Paramount Chief’s Wife Stirs Controversy Amid Chieftaincy Norms and Traditions

Paramount Chief Hon. PC Bai Shebora Sheba Gbereh III, alongside his wife, Ya-Bomposseh, and their children...
Paramount Chief Hon. PC Bai Shebora Sheba Gbereh III, alongside his wife, Ya-Bomposseh, and their children...

By Foday Moriba Conteh

According to our reporter in Port Loko District, Northern Sierra Leone, a sizable number of residents of Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom are speculating that the wife of the Paramount Chief of the Chiefdom, Ya Bomposseh Sheba, who doubles as the Head of Traditional Female Chiefs in the Chiefdom, is set to break chieftaincy norms. He intimated how it is mooted that there is looming imminent succession wahala hovering over the chiefdom which is largely due to the lack of traditional preparedness of those who will be qualified to lay claims on the leadership of the chiefdom. This, they furthered is attributable to the non-availability of the claimants within the chiefdom because their mother, the wife of the Paramount Chief, Ya Bomposseh, has not returned with them from a vacation they undertook despite the fact that schools have reopened over a couple of months ago.

Our reporter further informed that to many such is indeed quite strange as the Paramount Chief, Hon PC Bai Shebora Sheba Gbereh III and his wife traveled for a vacation last year to the United Kingdom and they both returned on the expected date. The unexpected hiatus, which began as a holiday for Ya-Bomposseh and her children, has extended into several months, causing unrest and raising numerous questions within the community, affectionately known as the ‘Bullomites’.

He said tongues have been wagging among residents who have been interpreting the twist of event as a setback in the chiefdom and has brought many questions among the ‘Bullomites’ with one of them, Mrs. Tucker, the Headmistress of the Word of Life International School. asking: “As the only wife to the Chief, why absconding from her matrimonial home?”

Our reporter mentioned how the Headmistress expressed lots of disappointment in not seeing the kids return to school saying they have missed a lot in school, wondering if they would catch up after missing a whole term of classes.

He highlighted that in an interview granted, Ya-Alimamy Ka’Kake (the Personal Assistant to Ya Bomposseh), said the latter left the shores of Sierra Leone on the 7th of April 2023 for a couple of week vacation with the kids.

“The travel was meant to let the kids go out of the country while making arrangements for an unannounced initiation rituals upon return,” he quoted her adding how she sounded astonished at what she referred to as a betrayal of culture and tradition.

The reporter said when he asked her what would happen when Ya Bomposseh returned, Ka’Kake revealed the plans to initiate the kids as any of them is entitled to the throne of the Chiefdom as their custom dictates to ‘catch them when they are young’.

She also pointed out that the fact that the obnoxious Gender Act that restricted women has been amended to the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act (GEWE), guarantees the right of women and girls, but lamented that Yabomposseh has made it more worrisome for them as for now it is uncertain what the future holds for the Sheba family if things do not go in accordance to laid down traditions it might be the collapse of the Sheba Ruling family.

It must be noted that Chieftaincy traditions and customs are sacred, lifetime dignified achievements that are unique and are highly contested by members from ruling heritages or family.

Our reporter said upon further investigation it was stated by a very senior Chiefdom stakeholder, Pa Komrabai, the Kasongha Section Chief, that the failure on the part of Ya bomposseh and her children to return might be connected to health reasons or unforeseen circumstances which have held them long from coming home. He stated how the PCMP Bai Shebora is also worried considering how his subjects might perceive and misconstrue the situation.

He then went on to elaborate on the amount of money being spent to give Sahid Sheba Kamara, the male child a befitting Poro and Hojeh initiation while simultaneously initiating Aminata Sheba Kamara and Fatima Sheba Kamara, the girls, into the Female Genital Mutilation (Bondo Society). “It is part of cleansing them and granting them a sense of belonging”, he was also quoted as saying.

Worthy of note is that despite the Government’s pronouncement on the ban on secret societies, its implementation faces tough resistance. During the school holiday, this medium investigated over fifty (50) Secret Societies across the country and they are unbelievably on the rise. What also came out glaringly was that the initiation ceremonies or rites were horrific and for the Bondo Society for girls and women, the cutting or mutilation causes bleeding and its deadly.

For some in this country the practice is considered outdated, inhumane, and rejected by certain elite female activists. Campaigns are ongoing but the initiators (Soweis) are afraid of losing their jobs and finding it hard to abide by the ban. Some female groups in West-End of Freetown have joined the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Purposeful and Irish Aid on a float parade to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

In trying to get at the bottom of this interesting and unfolding episode in Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, our reporter rang the Paramount Chief for him to throw light on the issue but unfortunately he did not pick up.

Further efforts were made to interview him at the House of Parliament since he serves as the Paramount Chief Member of Parliament (PCMP) for Port Loko District but those efforts proved futile.

Investigation into this interesting human interest saga continues and new findings will be revealed.
