He called for unity and collaboration among all citizens in the pursuit of development and assured that as part of Civil Society, they would closely monitor and hold Gento accountable for the promises he has made if not fulfilled.

He emphasized the benefits that the Project would bring to Banana Island and Sierra Leone as a whole.

Other Community Leaders expressed their unanimous support for the project which, according to them, would bring much-needed development and economic opportunities to Banana Island.

It must be noted that the proposed Seaport will be located in Dublin and Rickett Communities, Banana Island in the Western Area Rural District of Sierra Leone and will be dedicated to meeting high standards.

Following best practice, the Gento Group of Companies, in the recent past, employed experts to conduct environmental research, evaluate potential impacts and communicate their findings to stakeholders, decision-makers and the public. The importance of addressing concerns raised by local community residents, establish grievance mechanisms and maintain transparency were taken into due consideration.

Significantly, within the two days that the presentations were made a range of experts discussed various findings of  the studies they conducted which bordered on environmental, biodiversity and geological assessments demonstrating a commitment, on the part of the GENTO Group to rigorous research and adherence to high standards and best practices.

Worthy of note also is the fact that the GENTO Group of Companies has reaffirmed its commitment to the Project’s standards and its intent to keep stakeholders and the public informed about the project’s potential impact and mitigation measures.

The highpoint of the events were a question-and-answer session, a conducted tour of the island and showcasing a comprehensive approach taken to engage community residents and address their concerns.

That announcement was made during a gathering of development partners and stakeholders in the agricultural sector at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown.

President Bio emphasized his administration’s commitment to human capital development for sustainable growth, with a specific focus on agriculture through the Feed Salone Program. The initiative aims to ignite agricultural productivity, ensure food security and foster inclusive economic growth, laying the foundation for long-term prosperity in Sierra Leone.

Addressing a diverse audience including representatives from civil society organizations, development partners, the private sector, and farmers, President Bio pointed out Sierra Leone’s vast resources, including abundant land, water, sunshine, and a readily available labour force. He expressed his belief that Sierra Leone should not be a net food importer.

The President highlighted the Government’s efforts to create an enabling environment for private sector investment in agriculture, including a $10 million facility to support the import and distribution of fertilizer, seed production, and agrochemicals. President Bio emphasized the need for a comprehensive transformation of the agriculture sector, particularly in rural areas, to uplift them from economic hardship to prosperity.

Central to the Feed Salone Program is a focus on agricultural industrialization, encompassing not only primary production but also the development of agricultural value chains. President Bio announced the establishment of a Presidential Council on Agriculture, which he will chair, consisting of Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the private sector, farmers, academia, research institutions, and civil society. The Council will oversee the successful implementation of the Feed Salone Program.

The Feed Salone initiative has five key objectives: reducing the importation of staple foods like rice, onions, and poultry products; increasing export earnings from cash crops; creating jobs; revitalizing rural areas through agriculture; reducing hunger and malnutrition; and building resilience to economic shocks.

Babatunde Ahonsi, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, praised President Bio’s commitment to agriculture and food security as national priorities. He highlighted the strong link between food security and sustainable development, emphasizing that progress in food security would contribute to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ahonsi commended the ambitious nature of the Feed Salone Strategy, recognizing the challenges posed by resource constraints and global instability. He called for extensive partnerships to ensure effective implementation, involving optimization of resources, capacity building, technical expertise, networking, and collaboration between Government and society.

Dr. Ahonsi concluded by confirming the United Nations’ readiness to support the finalization and better implementation of the Feed Salone program, providing the necessary capacities, technical assistance, and resource partnerships in collaboration with other development partners.

SLWE Partners with JOEF to Promote Engineering in Rural Sierra Leone

To encourage 150 girls in Lungi to undertake engineering as a career in a two-day workshop hosted at the St Augustine Agricultural Senior Secondary School in Lungi, Port Loko District on 28th and 29th September Sierra Leone Women Engineers (SLWE) partnered with the James Ogunbor Education Foundation (JOEF). The theme of the workshop was: “Using Information Technology Tools as a Platform for Communicating Engineering Projects – Empowering Rural Girls in Sierra Leone”.

Founder and President of JOEF, Ing Florence Ogunbor, is an industrial and production engineer, who currently works as a Project Lead of the African Agricultural Knowledge Transfer Partnership Project by Innovate UK in Nigeria.

She revealed how her Foundation had hosted other similar workshops mostly in East Africa highlighting that Sierra Leone is the first country in West Africa to be selected for the workshop.

According to her, the purpose of the 2-day workshop was to engage rural girls on various engineering disciplines and allow them to use their creativity to depict engineering projects using ICT to present them.

“We want to bring out to their knowledge that they can do more in that field as we are using this platform to organize simple engineering activities that they can lay hands on before they become interested in the profession.”

Ing. Louise Chaytor, President and Co-founder of SLWE, on her part said that their organization has as its strategic objectives to mentor girls into engineering and to introduce engineering as a developmental tool to young girls in rural communities adding that SLWE was therefore pleased to partner with JOEF on the venture.

During a preceding event held on the 27th September 2023 at The View Restaurant, Ing. Prof. Jonas Redwood Sawyerr, President of the West African Federation of Engineering Organizations (WAFEO) talked about the creation and benefits of WAFEO and its goal to facilitate mobility for engineering students and professionals through a process of harmonisation of standards including accreditation and professional training.

He mentioned the establishment of the ECOWAS Engineer status, with the title Eco. Ing and the ECOWAS credit transfer scheme which will enable engineers with those credentials to work or study anywhere in the ECOWAS region. The same scheme is expected to be replicated in North, East and Southern Africa.

Ing. Prof. Jonas Redwood Sawyerr noted that technology has made the world smaller.
Speaking at the event, Ing Trudy Morgan, President of SLIE and Co-Founder of SLWE, stated that the workshop was all about empowering girls in rural Sierra Leone using information technology tools to convey engineering projects. She said that SLWE has always had plans to extend its activities beyond Freetown and the partnership provided the opportunity to begin to do so.

One hundred and fifty girls were led to do projects such as building paper towers, constructing an electrical fan and using photography to record videos of their engineering projects. Through the help of the lead facilitators, Engr. Florence Ogunbor and her teammate, Ms. Onome Agbi pupils were assisted in using IT tools to download, edit and present their engineering projects. During the course of the two-day workshop, a team of SLWE Women Ambassadors, Ings Magdalene Peters, Nadia Assad, Vanessa Macfoy, Rebecca Pratt, Sarah Campbell, Titoh Sowa, Louise Chaytor and Bushra Kamara assisted and encouraged them to focus on the engineering profession.

Ultramodern “We Yone Learning Centre” Opens in Port Loko

In a landmark moment for education and skills development in Sierra Leone, the U.S-Africa Children’s Fellowship Organization has on Saturday 30th September, 2023 inaugurated the state-of-the-art “We Yone Learning Centre” in Koya Chiefdom, Port Loko District.

Mark Grashow, President of the U.S-Africa Children’s Fellowship, graced the grand inauguration with a vision of the organization’s noble mission, underlining their unwavering dedication to providing crucial educational resources to institutions throughout Africa.

The inspiring genesis of the “We Yone Learning Centre” finds its roots in the selfless act of Sheku Mansaray, a war victim who personally covered the school fees of numerous Sierra Leonean students. In response, the organization not only dispatched an extensive collection of books but also established libraries in 20 schools. Bolstered by generous financial support, this vision evolved into the remarkable “We Yone Learning Centre.”

Grashow elaborated on the centre’s multifaceted mission, seeking to empower the local community with a diverse skill set, including sewing, solar panel installation, IT, and more maintaining that the programs are carefully tailored to the interests and needs of the residents.

One significant challenge facing the organization is the distribution of their extensive collection of 50,000 children’s books, currently housed in a container. Grashow earnestly appealed for assistance in delivering these literary treasures to schools.

Madam Emily Gagra, Deputy Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, threw her wholehearted support behind the “We Yone Learning Centre” initiative.

In her statement, she emphasized the perfect alignment of the endeavour with the Ministry’s vision and the President’s agenda for human capital development. Madam Emily Gagra urged the residents of Koya Chiefdom to embrace this opportunity with utmost seriousness, recognizing its potential to empower them towards self-reliance and enable meaningful contributions to their community.

Among the event’s participants, Sulaiman Koroma expressed his enthusiasm for the training centre’s establishment, shedding light on the challenging circumstances endured by their underserved community. He pledged the unwavering commitment of the community to maximize this opportunity, ensuring the security and sustainability of the training programs.

Meanwhile, in Masiaka and its environs, a transformative moment unfolded as community leaders and international supporters united under the banner of the “We Yone Center.” Bob Rollins, a prominent figure, emphasized the profound impact of the Fiona Heckscher Digital Library, highlighting its potential to shape the lives of local students by providing access to a diverse array of books and nurturing improved reading abilities.

Merrie Handfinger, a seasoned seamstress from the USA, shed light on the invaluable contribution of “Sheri’s Place,” a tailoring centre dedicated in memory of the late Sheri Saltztberg, wife of Mark Saltztberg. The Sheri Saltztberg Crafts Centre stands as a vital cornerstone of the “We Yone Center” initiative, offering essential skills and opportunities to the community.

Mariama Khai Fornah, in a rousing address, spoke of the tailoring centre, now named Sheri’s Space, and its dedication to transforming the lives of women across Sierra Leone. This endeavour is in memory of the late Sheri, a testament to her husband’s desire to keep her memory alive. She urged community members to prioritize skills acquisition, recognizing the bright future that awaits them through the diverse programs on offer, including Solar Installation Skills Training and Batik, among others, as part of the comprehensive curriculum.
