This momentous event, which took place on the 24th of September 2023 at the Monkey Bush Community Football Field in Waterloo, Western Rural District, aimed to raise awareness about the profound significance of peace and its positive impact on communities. Utilizing the universal language of football, the organizers effectively conveyed powerful messages of harmony and unity to the general public.

The high-profiled event attracted esteemed representatives from various sectors, including the Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs, the National Commission for Persons with Disability, the District Council, the Sierra Leone Police, and numerous stakeholders from the Monkey Bush Community amongst others. Their combined presence highlighted the importance and support for initiatives that promote peace and inclusivity.

She emphasized the existence of two notable groups within the Monkey Bush Community, namely the Advocacy Group and the Peace Ambassadors, who have been actively engaged in promoting peace within the region.

She further emphasized that the project extended its reach to eight other communities in the Western Rural District, including Monkey Bush, Five-Five, Deep Eye Water, Hastings, Kossoh Town, Grafton, Lakka, and Goderich Community. Eliza revealed that the football players, who actively participated in the peace match, represented these communities exemplifying their commitment to fostering peace and harmony.

She also underscored the significance of the peace football match in the Western Rural District noting that disturbances and conflicts often originate there and by hosting the event and spreading peace message, they aim to reinforce the importance of maintaining peace while fostering cohesion, love and harmony among community members.

Chief Pa Alimamy, one of the leaders of the Monkey Bush Community, highlighted the challenges faced by their community during the country’s war and the Ebola outbreak. Expressing his concerns, he urged the community members to prevent the recurrence of such hardships and advised the youth to resist the temptation of taking Kush, a substance he believed has the tendency to lead individuals towards illegal activities and disturb the nation’s peace.

Emphasizing the importance of unity and inclusivity, Dumbuya, the representative of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, expressed his delight at the initiation of a football match, which commenced with the participation of a young disabled girl who did the kick-off. He regarded that as a clear indication of inclusivity, and expressed a willingness to collaborate with Caritas in promoting peace and inclusion. He moreover stressed the urgency of putting an end to violence in the country.

Furthermore, a representative from the Sierra Leone Police affirmed their commitment to working closely with the community members to ensure peace prevails. He encouraged individuals to approach their community Chief for civil matters while emphasizing that the Police primarily deals with criminal matters. Underlining the significance of peace, he urged people to distance themselves from any form of violence and to view the Police as allies.

The peace football match concluded harmoniously, bringing satisfaction to both participating teams. The event was further enriched by a captivating musical performance centered on peace, delivered by the talented young musician, Leonous D Genius Jr. Shortly after that, a certification ceremony followed, wherein every player who took part in the match received a well-deserved certificate in recognition of their contribution to promoting peace.

USL Collaborates with Gamal Abdel Nasser University to Promote Dental Education in Sierra Leone

University of Sierra Leone and the Gamal Abdel Nasser University in Guinea have reached an agreement for the training of medical students from the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone (COMAHS, USL) in dental education.

In a meeting held on Friday, 22nd September, 2023 at the office of the Rector of the Gamal Abdel Nasser University in Conakry, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone (VC&P, USL), Brig. Gen. Prof. Foday Sahr pointed out that the agreement marks the beginning of a bigger and more sustainable collaboration between the two universities. The VC&P, USL noted that there is need to encourage the establishment of academic collaboration starting at a sub-regional level and going beyond.

He said it is a good move that both Universities have started a collaboration for the training of medical students to become doctors, adding that in the near future, the two universities should expand such collaboration to include joint research proposals and/or collaboration in research and staff exchange among others.

Brig. Gen. Prof. Foday Sahr expressed thanks and gratitude to Mercy Ships for facilitating the collaboration between USL and Gamal Abdel Nasser University. He pointed out there is an existing agreement between the USL and Mercy Ship, which was signed in July this year for the training of healthcare professionals in the area of dental education.

On his part, the Rector of Gamal Abdel Nasser University, Prof. Alpha Kabinet Keita said he acknowledged the importance of the engagement and collaboration judging from the high-profiled delegation in his office. He said he is pleased and encouraged that his University is collaborating with the University of Sierra Leone.

Prof. Keita also expressed hope that beyond the relationship that each of the institutions has with Mercy Ships, the two universities should move ahead with further engagements on a bilateral level for the benefit of all those who stand to gain from the training and other exchange programmes.

He assured the delegation from USL that students from COMAHS would be well received and given the requisite training to become professional dentists.

Prof. Keita said with the trust placed in his University by the USL administration to train dental students from Sierra Leone, he is also looking forward to a reciprocal gesture, with Gamal Abdel Nasser University sending their own students for training in other disciplines, especially in the area of bilingual collaboration for the benefits of students of both institutions.

An extensive tour of the state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and the dental clinic formed a highlight of the visit to the Gamal Abdel Nasser University in Conakry, Guinea.

In July this year, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Brig. Gen. Prof. Foday Sahr signed a “Memorandum of Agreement” with the Country Director of the faith-based international non-profit charitable organization, Mercy Ships.

Under that arrangement, Sierra Leonean medical students at USL (COMAHS) would be pursuing doctoral degrees in Dental Surgery at the Gamal Abdel Nasser University in Conakry, Guinea. In this regard, the first set of seven medical students would leave in October this year to commence a six-year training with the first year focusing mainly on intensive French language training. This would be followed by four years of dental training and another year of intensive clinical work at the University’s Dental School.

According to the agreement, Mercy Ships would undertake to support the students both financially and administratively for successful completion of the programme plus travel costs.

Meanwhile, as part of the VC&P’s re-engineering programme at the University of Sierra Leone, COMAHS established a Department of Dentistry about two years ago, and the collaboration with the Gamal Abdel Nasser University is part of ongoing efforts to make that department functional and viable.

By Philip Koroma in Kenema

The Gola Rainforest Conservation Programme (GRCP), in a significant development, has announced the disbursement of royalties to landowners in seven Gola Forest communities across Sierra Leone. This initiative marks a crucial step in preserving the Gola Rainforest, a biodiversity hotspot and one of the last remaining tropical rainforests on the planet.

Fomba Kanneh, the Head of Gola Rainforest Conservation Programme, underlined the organization’s steadfast commitment to supporting local communities in various critical areas, including livelihood support, agriculture, environmental education, infrastructure development, and healthcare. He encouraged landowners to utilize this support optimally assuring them that continued forest conservation efforts would result in increased community benefits.

APC’s Hon. Mohamed Bangura Defends His Parliamentary Role

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a recent Africa Young Voices (AYV) television interview on September 25, 2023, Hon. Mohamed Bangura, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing a Constituency in the Karene District under the All People’s Congress (APC) banner, offered a staunch defense of his representation in Parliament, shedding light on the political turmoil within the party and asserting his commitment to serving the interests of his constituents.

Bangura, one of two APC MPs who defied the party’s leadership’s calls to boycott governance in protest of election result disputes, faced criticism from party supporters who labeled him a betrayer. However, he remained resolute in his stance, emphasizing that his actions were within the bounds of legality and aligned with the mandate of his constituents.

The MP addressed concerns about the legality of his representation, emphasizing the supremacy of the 1991 Constitution over party constitutions. “I am talking about the 1991 Constitution, which is supreme over the APC and the SLPP. So I don’t worry about the APC Constitution or the SLPP Constitution; I worry about the 1991 Constitution,” he stated firmly.

When Parliament reconvened, Bangura found himself as the sole opposition MP in the House, a position that earned him the role of Minority Leader.

Meanwhile, within the APC, prominent party member El-Hajj KB Bangura issued a passionate plea for unity, stressing that unity within the party is not merely a preference but a crucial necessity for the nation’s future well-being.

El-Hajj KB Bangura, an accomplished figure with academic credentials in economics, addressed the aftermath of the party’s recent primary elections, which exposed deep divisions among its ranks. He explained the significance of primary elections in the democratic process, highlighting how they allow parties to nominate candidates for upcoming general elections and appoint leaders.

The recent primary election within the APC was marked by intense competition and factionalism, revealing internal discord that has weakened the party’s standing within Sierra Leonean politics.

Emphasizing the pressing challenges facing Sierra Leone, including poverty, corruption, deficient infrastructure, and limited access to education and healthcare, El-Hajj KB Bangura argued that the APC must prioritize unity. He called on the party’s leadership to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation, ensuring that every member feels valued and integral to the party’s mission.

To regain popular support and challenge the current political paradigm, Bangura urged the APC to focus on issues that resonate with the masses. He advocated for the establishment of a comprehensive national agenda that encompasses the interests of all citizens and promotes inclusivity.

Transparent communication of the party’s vision and policies, Bangura believes, is essential for rebuilding trust among members and the general public. He concluded by underscoring the critical necessity of unity within the APC, stating that it is the path to a prosperous and inclusive Sierra Leone.

In light of these developments, the APC finds itself at a crossroads, with the choices of unity and discord determining its future trajectory within Sierra Leonean politics. The call for unity from within the party echoes the need for a cohesive vision and purpose in addressing the nation’s pressing challenges.

NaTCA DG Reveals Ongoing Efforts to Address Poor Network Coverage

By Alvin Lansana Kargbo

Director General of the National Communications Authority (NaTCA), Amara Brewah, addressed the issue of poor network coverage in Sierra Leone during the Government’s weekly Press Conference held on September 26th, 2023 at the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Conference Room  at Tower Hill in Freetown.

Brewah emphasized that the National Communications Authority operates with the goal of serving the mobile network coverage needs of both the Government and the people. However, he acknowledged the challenges of satisfying all stakeholders simultaneously maintaining that with such a vast responsibility, the Authority constantly strives to ensure that things are functioning smoothly and to keep everyone content.

One key point Brewah made was that the blame for low network coverage does not always lie with the mobile network companies. He indicated that some of the problems stem from the phones that people use further stating that if individuals own new phones that have not been previously used, such issues are less likely to occur. He lamented that many people in Sierra Leone purchase second-hand phones, which can contribute to the persistence of network problems.

Brewah went on to mention that the transmission of mobile coverage depends on poles that are positioned in specific areas adding that these poles require electricity to operate effectively saying if any of these poles encounter issues, whether related to electricity or other factors, the network performance is affected.

Furthermore, Brewah clarified that mobile network companies do not allocate poles everywhere since they do not consider it financially viable to do so. He said under the universal network fund, these companies share a portion of their revenue, enabling poles to be installed in several underserved locations.

The Director General highlighted the significant improvements made within the sector during the past few years. He assured that the National Communications Authority remains committed to further enhancing its support for both the mobile network companies and the people of Sierra Leone. He went on to reveal that through ongoing efforts they aim to create a better telecom infrastructure that benefits the company, the Government and the general population.

Big Fish Fatally Shot by Military in Freetown for Going on the Rampage

By Amin Kef (Ranger)
In a shocking incident that unfolded on Lightfoot-Boston Street in Freetown, notorious musical artist “Big Fish,” real name Foday Alieu, met his demise on Thursday September 21, 2023, after being shot and killed by a military officer. This dramatic event has sent shockwaves through the city, sparking widespread discussions and speculation.
As the story began to circulate, various versions of the incident emerged, with some accounts filled with embellishments and distortions. To provide a factual account of the event, the Sierra Leone Police and the Office of National Security (ONS) issued a joint statement aimed at shedding light on the tragic episode in the heart of Freetown’s Central Business District.
According to the official statement, the incident unfolded on the afternoon of September 21, 2023, along Lightfoot Boston Street. Foday Alieu, known as “Big Fish,” had gained notoriety for his involvement in violence and criminal activities. Unfortunately, his actions on that fateful day would lead to a fatal confrontation with law enforcement.
The official account outlined a sequence of events that began when Alieu forcibly seized a rifle from a female police officer near the United Bank for Africa (UBA) on Charlotte Street. He immediately started firing the weapon indiscriminately, causing panic and chaos in the area.
Despite repeated efforts by law enforcement officers to persuade Alieu to surrender the firearm and stop his dangerous actions, he persisted in his random gunfire. The situation took a more serious turn when a military officer stepped in to convince Alieu to drop the weapon and end the violence.
Tragically, all attempts to de-escalate the situation failed. Given the severe threat Alieu posed to public safety, the brave military officer, acting in accordance with Sierra Leone’s Constitution, was forced to use deadly force. Alieu was shot and subsequently neutralized.
During the confrontation, an innocent female passerby sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Fortunately, her injuries are reported as non-life-threatening. Foday Alieu’s body was transported to the morgue, while the injured pedestrian received medical treatment at a hospital.
The Sierra Leone Police emphasized that the incident had been handled professionally to protect public safety. They assured the public that the situation was under control and normalcy had been restored, promising further details as the investigation progressed.
Accounts of the incident were provided by ACP Brima Kamara, Head of Sierra Leone Police Media, and a representative from the Office of National Security (ONS). According to ACP Kamara, Big Fish forcibly seized a police officer’s weapon at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and fired multiple shots indiscriminately, causing panic among bystanders. A military officer eventually confronted him, returning fire after being fired upon, resulting in Big Fish’s death. Fortunately, there was only one reported casualty, a female passerby receiving medical treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Abdul Karim Will, representing the Office of National Security (ONS), highlighted previous complaints against Big Fish for threats and criminal behavior, urging the public to resume normal activities.
The incident has also raised concerns about mental health, with reports suggesting that Big Fish had a history of erratic behavior and may have been suffering from mental health issues. This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing mental health concerns within society.
As the investigation continues, Sierra Leoneans are urged to maintain peace and refrain from engaging in violence or unlawful activities. The Security Sector has expressed its commitment to providing security for all citizens.

As Return of Bank Governor Kelfala Kallon in Limbo… Mayor-Elect Aki-Sawyer’s Uncanny International Engagement  Sparks Controversy

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a surprising turn of events, Mayor-Elect Yvonne Aki-Sawyer (YAS) has found herself in hot water once again, sparking controversy over an international agreement and prompting a swift response from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

Prominent public figure, Andrew Keili, raised the alarm, indicating that what many had hoped would be a period of respite between the former Mayor and Mayor-Elect, Yvonne Aki-Sawyer (YAS), has now given way to renewed tensions. This time, the source of the dispute centers around an accord signed by YAS with the Mayor of New Haven, Connecticut in the USA, reaffirming a previous agreement between the two cities. Critics argue that YAS’s actions were ill-timed and question the source of her funding for her recent travels.

The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs wasted no time in issuing a Press Release, condemning the agreement as “null and void,” citing YAS’s lack of authority to sign any agreement while not officially seated as Mayor. The release also called upon the Sierra Leone Ambassador to the USA to inform the Mayor of New Haven about the situation and hinted at a potential investigation into the funding of this international engagement.

Detractors are now raising questions about the possibility of misconduct, such as the misappropriation of Government or FCC funds for YAS’s travels. The Ministry emphasized that Sierra Leone is a sovereign nation governed by the rule of law, and interference in its affairs is unwelcomed.

In response to the controversy, Andrew Keili pointed out some typographical errors in the Ministry’s Press Release, humorously suggesting that the typist might have been influenced by religious references. He also highlighted an email from the Mayor of New Haven, indicating that the agreement was non-binding and symbolic.

However, Keili questioned the wisdom of YAS’s decision to engage in international activities while the political situation remained unresolved. He also called on the Ministry to conduct a thorough investigation before passing judgment.

In a separate development, the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone, Professor Kelfala Kallon, addressed rumors circulating on social media that he had gone into self-exile due to his political advice to President Bio. Kallon refuted these claims, asserting that he had been attending various functions and had not disappeared. He emphasized his commitment to keeping politics out of the bank’s operations and vice versa.

Addressing those behind the false rumors and audios, Governor Kallon warned against cowardly behavior and urged them to find productive work to support the economy. He hinted at upcoming economic policies that could create employment opportunities.

While the controversy surrounding YAS’s international agreement continues to simmer, questions about the Governor’s leave period persist. Sierra Leoneans eagerly await further statements from both YAS and the Governor as these developments unfold.
