NP (SL) Ltd Optimizes Customer Care to Drive Exceptional Satisfaction

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

NP (SL) Ltd is undoubtedly highly known for taking customer care to the highest pedestal in the country. Indeed such is indisputable when cognizance is taken of how Management is very keen in optimizing customer satisfaction in its service delivery on different fronts.

Members of staff of the company are very mindful of the fact that it is the customer that comes first and therefore needs the utmost attention always ensuring that transactions are conducted under a congenial atmosphere that result into a win-win situation. For this brilliant and managerial initiative the company has been making positive headways positioning to stand tall among other business entities in this part of the world.

With a capable and result-oriented ‘Team NP’, working collaboratively and assiduously, where even the cleaner is regarded as highly relevant there is bound to be positive outcomes and the company has mastered this by ensuring that synergy is enhanced.
One admirable quality that NP-SL Ltd possesses is working tirelessly and effectively using its contacts with oil producing countries in order to ensure that there is timely purchase and delivery of petroleum products to avoid shortages.

It goes without saying that fuel, for example, could be a political commodity in the sense that fluctuation in its price would make a Government likeable or unpopular. When the price goes up then people blame the Government for that but if it goes down it is kudos for the political administration.

Its timely importation of petroleum products has earned NP high commendations from various quarters simply because it helps to cushion unrest and other forms of disadvantageous effects one of which is increase in transport fares, increase in the prices of certain commodities. The pro-activeness of the company invariably has a direct impact on poverty reduction in variable ways.

Some who may not be aware of the fact that NP-SL Ltd is wholly owned by Sierra Leoneans vis-à-vis the visibility of the company and how it is remarkably striving could find it hard to believe that it a truly indigenous company.

However, that remains the plain truth when it is learnt that it was Sierra Leonean 35 workers formerly working for British Petroleum (BP) who pulled together their end of service benefits to purchase shares which were used to establish NP, which today is a success story of an indigenous company, having branches in various parts of the country and in other four West African countries namely Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast and The Gambia. The company’s operations right across the spectrum is contributing towards revenue generation and job creation for many.

With gas as one its marketable products it was thought wise to be producing gas cookers, popularly known as NP Gas, which could be access at their different filling stations. According to investigation conducted NP Gas is cooking-friendly, safe and long lasting. It is going at an affordable price and many are going for it.

When reference is made to Local Content then NP-SL Ltd stands tall within that realm as nearly all its members of staff are Sierra Leoneans thereby making use of local talents everywhere they are operating. The Local Content Policy is indeed an engine of growth and NP is making full use of it.
Without any iota of doubt NP-SL Ltd is growing taller and taller as time goes by.

Orange Money & NaCSA Partner to Transfer Cash to 35,000 Vulnerable Individuals

By Abubakarr Harding

An agreement was signed on the 13th March, 2023 between Orange SL and the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) for the third phase of the Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) using mobile money.

According to the Senior Director of Social Protection at NaCSA, the social safety net project is the country’s flagship project that provides income to low-income earners and vulnerable individuals. He said it is a contingency emergency response component of the World Bank to support vulnerable beneficiaries impacted by the global economic crisis.

He further revealed that the beneficiaries are elderly-headed households, female-headed households, and households with persons with disabilities in 11 district towns and that Orange Money was selected to deliver cash transfers amounting to 2,666 new leads to 35,000 beneficiaries.

David Mansaray, Orange Money CEO, expressed his excitement over the partnership, saying that it had been a long journey since they tried to engage NaCSA in 2019 adding that Orange Money had grown over the years and worked with various institutions to provide similar services. Highlighted was that the ECT will contribute to economic growth and the funds will be used for the right purpose.

Mansaray assured NaCSA, ACC and everyone that Orange Money is the right platform that can provide transparency, accountability, and security for all funds.

He disclosed that Orange Money has worked on similar projects with the WFP, WHO, and other big institutions, including Ebola victims and vulnerable societies during the COVID-19 crisis underscoring how they are committed to deliver the project and contribute to the overall scope of financial inclusion in Sierra Leone, driving the country into a cashless society.

Mobile money cash transfer has been proven to be effective in other countries. In Bangladesh, a study showed that mobile money transfers to women increased household expenditure on healthcare and education by 22% and 15%, respectively. In Kenya, mobile money transfers to smallholder farmers increased agricultural productivity by 25%. Mobile money has also been proven to be an effective tool for emergency cash transfers in countries like Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Malawi. Mobile money technology has the potential to reach populations that are unbanked and have limited access to financial services. It reduces transaction costs, provides convenience and security, and enables remote transactions.

“We are monitoring and observing this milestone signatory to ensure that it is transparently executed and brings a whole transformation into the cash transfer process,” said Patrick Morovia of the Anti Corruption Commission.

He thanked NaCSA for giving ACC the opportunity of being part of the process.

It must be noted that the partnership between Orange Money and NaCSA is a significant step towards financial inclusion and poverty reduction in Sierra Leone. The cash transfer using mobile money is an effective tool to provide support to vulnerable individuals during times of crisis. With the success of the ECT, more partnerships between mobile money providers and Government agencies are likely to be entered into to promote financial inclusion in Sierra Leone.

UK Government Boosts Sierra Leone’s Education Section with £25m

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

To support Secondary Schools in the country, the British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Ms. Lisa Chesney, has announced an additional twenty-five million Pounds (£25m) grant for a new five-year programme funded by the United Kingdom Government.

The High Commissioner made the announcement on Thursday 16th March 2023 at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown when celebrating the closing of the 1st phase of the project.

“We are gathered here to celebrate the learning from all these interventions and more. But this is not just looking backwards at what has happened. I want to look forward to it too. Today, it is my great pleasure to announce a new five-year programme funded by the UK Government to build on and consolidate Leh Wi Lan gains. Our new Secondary School improvement programme with the Government of Sierra Leone will make up to 25 million Pounds available for continued secondary school improvement, system strengthening, policy development and planning,” she said.

According to her, Mott McDonald was selected by competition to implement this new programme, adding that they are also selecting an organization to work closely with MBSSE over the next years on policy and planning.

She expressed delight that the event marks a moment of reflection as they enter the next phase in UK support to the education sector in Sierra Leone.

“We all know that any programme can only be good as the prevailing policy environment and leadership in the sector – and both have been excellent, gaining Sierra Leone recognition internationally as well as nationally. This has needed vision and boldness – the investment in human capital the Government is making today sets the stage for an intergenerational roll back of poverty and progress for women, in particular. We are proud of our contribution to these achievements,” she said.

The British High Commissioner said the Radical Inclusion and Free Quality School Education have provided a clear agenda for action, noting that Leh Wi Lan has worked in close collaboration with a wide range of MBSSE colleagues at national, district and school level – under the dynamic and exemplary leadership of Minister Sengeh.

According to her, the aim has not only been to improve the quality of education delivery at school level but also to build the education system’s own internal capacity to deliver, adding that the impact has been achieved through a judicious blend of many impactful interventions over the past six years.

She said the event is to share the many lessons learnt and the incredible achievements of the Leh Wi Lan Project funded by the United Kingdom Aid through the British High Commission, implemented by Mott Macdonald, working closely with MBSSE.

“This has been our flagship intervention in the education sector since 2016, during which time Leh Wi Lan has become a widely known household name. The quality of the learning experience for all secondary learners has improved but especially for girls and children with disabilities,” she said.

She said the recent visit of the British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly shows how effective the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone work together on the issues that matter to both parties, adding that education was front and centre on this visit and according to Mr. Cleverly, the children at school were wonderful ambassadors for the power of investing in education.

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Dr. Moinina David Sengeh, highlighted gains made by Sierra Leone in the education sector, noting that there is absolutely no indicator of learning in which Sierra Leone is not better today than where we were in 2018, adding that Sierra Leone will only get better in the coming years.

He encouraged partners to go beyond the figures that they are seeing and go to the classrooms and see the impact in the education sector for themselves.

“I want you to look at the partnership between Sierra Leone and the UK in three ‘I’s; Information, Impact and Idea,” he said.

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The Washington Metro Chapter of Sierra Leone People’s Party North America (SLPPNA) Branch emerged as Best Supporting Chapter in the 2023 SLPPPNA Regional Award under the dynamic, authentic  and democratic leadership of Chairman Fatmata Dausy Wurie on the 10th and 11th March 2023 at the Academy Ballroom in New Jersey

Though a bit over due, the authentic and dynamic Chairman of Washington Metro Chapter, FD Wurie received the long awaited award with ecstasy, elation and exultation, amidst a thunderous applause and ovation from  Team Washington .

Chairman Fatmata Dausy Wurie, in a snap chat with this medium intimated that it was a indeed a great day for her to emerge in that position. She disclosed that her political career dates back to 1998 when she was the Organizing Secretary of the  Washington DC Metro Chapter, a position she held for one year and later went unopposed  as the Women’s Leader for five years stating how it was difficult during those years because the SLPP was in opposition adding that she embarked on a rigorous recruitment and retention campaign to get members to attend meetings and take part in other activities disclosing how she did that by undertaking to celebrate birthdays of members and devising the best Chapter members award which according to her greatly worked.

Commissioner Braima Moiforay, Secretary General of the Electoral Commission,  SLPP Washington  Metro Chapter, stated that he does not have adequate words to express his profound appreciation  for the unprecedented award adding that though it  was a bit late , but it was timely  and given at the appropriate venue —the  2023 SLPPNA Regional Convention.

Sierra Leone Rated as One of the World’s Greatest Places to Visit in 2023

Time Magazine has just released its World’s Greatest Places to Visit in 2023, and expectedly Sierra Leone is listed in the top 50 places globally. The massive investment and visionary leadership of President Julius Maada Bio are bearing fruits. In the report titled “Freetown Peninsula: Sierra Leone Africa’s new coastal hub”, Terry Ward, wrote, “Emerging from the pandemic with the backing of the World Bank to help promote the West African nation’s rich tourism potential—with diverse wildlife, world-class surfing waves, the vibey coastal capital of Freetown, and a brand-new airport—all odds are on Sierra Leone to explode on the adventure travel scene.” Ward also added that “The time to go is now.”

During his speech at the unveiling of the Brand-New Airport in Lungi earlier this month, President Bio stated, “We plan to leverage the ultra-modern airport to boost tourism and position the country as an aviation hub in the region” some sceptics dismissed this as political rhetoric. A few months on, the world is bracing for a possible surge in tourism activities in the country in the coming months.

Unbiased observers have long foretold the country’s future as one of the world’s best tourism destinations due to President Bio’s methodic investments in the sector. Home to rare birds and threatened species such as the pygmy hippopotamus, Diana monkey and chimpanzees, Sierra Leone rainforests and tiny exotic islands attract eco-tourists and sports fishers. The unique beaches have become a prime attraction, with white, sandy beaches and safe seas that are calm, clear and warm to swim in.

Sierra Leone is also closer to Europe than other more developed beach destinations, such as the Caribbean, the Maldives and Mauritius, and in the same time zone. Due to quality leadership and strategic investments, the country is now set to compete with other global tourism destinations.

Sierra Leone’s tourism potential has yet to be explored. The diverse ecosystem offers attractive white sandy beaches, a tropical forest, scenic mountains, and exciting wildlife. There are also historic islands with a wide range of activities, including swimming, bird watching, fishing, and hiking.

The decade-long civil war impacted the tourism sector and destroyed infrastructure. With the ensuing peace, stability, and purposeful leadership, the industry has been experiencing consistent annual growth averaging 28 percent. However, international arrivals declined significantly with the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic in 2014. Nevertheless, the sector quickly re-bounded when the country was declared Ebola-free in 2016, and arrivals increased by more than 500 percent in 2018.

Opportunities exist to stimulate and attract investment in this sector. Having identified tourism as one of the diversifying growth sectors alongside agriculture and fisheries, the government formulated a national tourism policy and a national ecotourism policy to serve as blueprints for the sector’s sustainable development and seeks to attract 20,000 international and 30,000 domestic ecotourism visits by 2025. The government now provides visas on arrival and has reviewed the high travel costs to the country. The airport infrastructure has been upgraded, arrival facilities expanded, and security improved.

The private sector could engage in rehabilitating and reconstructing existing hotels and constructing new large-scale hotels, both in the beach areas and the tropical forests. The overall government objective is to increase revenue and jobs from tourism by promoting the country’s international image and cultural heritage, improving the policy and legal environment, developing historic sites, skills, and infrastructure, promoting marketing, diversifying tourism products, and attracting investors into the sector.

The tourism industry has significant potential for growth as the country showcases its tourist sites and natural resources. Building human capacity in the tourism and hospitality industry provides prospects for investment in this sector.

Companies can invest in building resorts, hotels, and restaurants along the stretch of white sand beaches and providing tourism services, including touring, sport fishing, bird watching, and hiking.

It’s time to explore the verdant landscape and the pristine beaches of Mama Salone.
