This medium was reliably informed that the Police interrogated the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, for eight hours over a Facebook post protesting the arrest of one of her councilors.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, it was stated, complained in a live video filmed in front of police about the arrest of Councilor Sheku Turay, who was detained for allegedly inciting deadly violence earlier this year.

Turay and Aki-Sawyerr were about to board a flight to New York to attend the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event last month when he was apprehended.

Police then invited Aki-Sawyerr to answer questions on “an alleged case of obstruction of police duties and disorderly behavior,” a police notice shows.

Aki-Sawyerr arrived at the police Criminal Investigation Department this past Monday at 10 a.m. and was questioned until about 6 p.m., she said in a text response to questions. She returned to the police office Tuesday morning for further interrogation, she said.

There have been simmering tensions between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party and Aki-Sawyerr’s opposition All People’s Congress party as the nation heads toward an election in 2023.

President Julius Maada Bio blamed the opposition — including the Mayor– for deadly protests in August against the rising cost of living. Inflation accelerated to 29.5% in July, and the Government’s high debt burden limited its ability to help subsidize costs for the nation’s 8 million people. Aki-Sawyerr has denied any involvement in the protests that led to the deaths of at least 20 people.

The Mayor was among 15 winners of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Global Mayors Challenge this year for her proposal to tackle deforestation by using digital technologies to support tree maintenance in Freetown. Winners get a $1 million grant to implement the projects over three years.

Bloomberg Philanthropies founder Michael Bloomberg is the majority owner of Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News.

Aki-Sawyerr said she’s keen to run for mayor again.

On behalf of SLAJ, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla congratulated the IGP on his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of the SLP. He noted that the focus of the courtesy visit was to brief the IGP of the subsisting relationship between the Police and SLAJ. He spoke about the memorandum of understanding signed between the two Institutions in August 2021, with his predecessor; which,  among other things, was and still to end impunity in crime, work with the Police, understand each other’s mandate, roles and responsibilities. And now that there is an administrative change, they (SLAJ) thought it fit to do a follow up on the MOU, and where possible, do a review of it.

This came against the backdrop that the country is moving towards or had already started the electioneering processes; for which they (SLAJ) are partners, as well. The President emphasized that this could surely make a pathway for non-violence, free, fair and credible elections, come 2023.

The President also made an appeal for the establishment of a policy frame work for the safety of Journalists, going into the elections and even at normal times. He briefed the IGP on the establishment of the National Safety Committee comprising of SLAJ, Security Sector, Civil Society and relevant stakeholders.

Fatmata Dainkeh Katta, the SLAJ’s Assistant Secretary, in her vote of thanks, entreated the IGP about the importance of having a manual/guidelines that could distinctly speak to the roles and responsibilities of the Police on one hand, and the Journalists, on the other; so as to avoid the tendency of conflicting situations. She proposed for a working day between SLAJ and the Police – a day which she said could be used to clearly ascertain the codes of ethics, Independent Media Commission’s Code of Practice, and the SLP’s mandate and responsibilities.

In response, the IGP thanked, welcomed and appreciated the President of SLAJ and his Executive for the courtesy call, which he considered to be of paramount importance.

On the issue of reviewing the MoU signed by his predecessor, on behalf of the SLP, the IGP said that the need exist for the SLP Legal Team to look at the document, possibly for any additional inputs.

Fayia Sellu equally subscribed to having a workshop between the Police and SLAJ, so that the institutions’ roles and responsibilities could be better cascaded to either side, with the view to avoiding any superior tendencies, but rather the fostering of cohesion and togetherness, as development partners.

The public, the IGP said, should see Journalists and Police in harmony; noting, that it would instill confidence in the minds of the populace. The IGP encouraged the President of SLAJ and his membership to be calling on the hierarchy of the Police whenever they are faced with a challenge. This, he noted, is a professional way to salvage any impasse between the two entities.

Head of SLP’s Media and Public Relations – ACP Brima Kamara was tasked to work on the proposed workshop between the SLP and SLAJ; to look into election’s preparedness framework, and see where SLAJ could fit in; and to carve out the different mandates, roles and responsibilities of the SLP, SLAJ, and IMC.

In closing, the IGP said “SLAJ is close to my heart”.

The engagement was held amid a relaxing and friendly atmosphere; climaxed with group photographs and handshakes.

NP-SL Incontestably Leads in the Realm of Customer Care

NP-Sierra Leone Limited (NP-SL Ltd)

By Amin Kef-Ranger

It is strongly incontestable that the leading petroleum company in the country, NP- Sierra Leone Limited is highly known for being the first in the realm of customer care. This is indisputable when cognizance is taken of how Management is very keen on optimizing customer satisfaction in its service delivery on different fronts.

Members of staff of the company are very mindful of the fact that it is the customer that comes first and therefore needs the utmost attention always ensuring that transactions are conducted under a congenial atmosphere that result into a win-win situation. For this brilliant and managerial initiative the company has been making positive headways positioning to stand tall among other business entities in this part of the world.

With a capable and result-oriented ‘Team NP’, working collaboratively and assiduously, where even the cleaner is regarded as highly relevant there is bound to be positive outcomes and the company has mastered this by ensuring that synergy is enhanced.

One admirable quality that NP-SL Ltd possesses is working tirelessly and effectively using its contacts with oil-producing countries in order to ensure that there is timely purchase and delivery of petroleum products to avoid shortages. It goes without saying that fuel, for example, could be a political commodity in the sense that fluctuation in its price would make a Government likeable or unpopular. When the price goes up then people blame the Government for that but if it goes down it is kudos for the political administration.

Its timely importation of petroleum products has earned NP high commendations from various quarters simply because it helps to cushion unrest and other forms of disadvantageous effects one of which is increase in transport fares, increase in the prices of certain commodities. The pro-activeness of the company invariably has a direct impact on poverty reduction in variable ways.

Some who may not be aware of the fact that NP-SL Ltd is wholly owned by Sierra Leoneans vis-à-vis the visibility of the company and how it is remarkably striving could find it hard to believe that it a truly indigenous company.

However, that remains the plain truth when it is learnt that it was Sierra Leonean 35 workers formerly working for British Petroleum (BP) who pulled together their end of service benefits to purchase shares which were used to establish NP, which today is a success story of an indigenous company, having branches in various parts of the country and in other four West African countries namely Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast and The Gambia. The company’s operations right across the spectrum is contributing towards revenue generation and job creation for many.

With gas as one its marketable products it was thought wise to be producing gas cookers, popularly known as NP Gas, which could be access at their different filling stations. According to investigation conducted NP Gas is cooking-friendly, safe and long-lasting. It is going at an affordable price and many are going for it.

When reference is made to Local Content, which by law is a Policy, then NP-SL Ltd stands tall within that realm as nearly all its members of staff are Sierra Leoneans thereby making use of local talents everywhere they are operating. The Local Content Policy is indeed an engine of growth and NP is making full use of it.
Without any iota of doubt NP-SL Ltd is growing by leaps and bounds.

APPYA Engages Western Area Youth Leaders on Effect of Political Violence

By Foday Moriba Conteh

As part of their strides towards creating a peaceful, sustainable and inclusive country, the All Political Parties Youth Association (APPYA) with support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs has on Monday 3rd October, 2022 held a one-day sensitization of youth leaders in the Western Area on the effect of political violence in the country. The one-day sensitization meeting was held at the former Special Court of Sierra Leone, Peace Museum on Jomo Kenyatta Road in Freetown.

In his welcome address, the President of the All Political Parties Youth Association, Mohamed Jalloh, expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Youth Affairs for providing the funds for the event.

He said that Sierra Leone is facing profound challenges, with a series politically instigated skirmishes happening around the country and yet young people are not only heavily affected by those crises they are on the frontlines for action and solutions.

The President saluted young people across the country for raising their voices in the streets and online and standing up for peace, democracy, social justice and so much more, stating that stakeholders need to ensure that young people have a seat at the table forging inclusive solutions that combine peace, democracy and sustainable development in the country.

“We represent a source of innovation, ideas and solutions that have the propensity to catapult our beloved nation to the next level. Time and again, young people have been at the forefront of efforts to build and sustain peace, including activism and peaceful protests,” he maintained.

He pointed out that over the years, with support from the Political Parties Registration Commission they have been taking steps to harness that potential as a positive force for building peaceful and tolerant societies, adding that as the country heads towards a defining period of our democracy (The 2023 Elections) they are calling on the international community to step up their support to young people in politics as this will be a strong investment in our Democracy.

“I hereby assure you all that you can count on the All Political Parties Youth Association to continue to amplify young people’s voices and support youth led efforts towards a peaceful, sustainable and inclusive future, especially leading to the 2023 elections,” he concluded.

Giving an overview of the event, the Secretary General of the All Political Parties Youth Association, Samuel P.O.V Macauley said that over the years there has been a lot of misconception about who is a youth and in most times youth in Sierra Leone are termed as people who are unemployed or perpetrators of violence.

He maintained that the youth form a very important component in society with lots of innovation and ideas that will help towards the development of the country.

Samuel P.O.V Macauley stated that the a one-day sensitization of youth leaders in the Western Area on the effect of Political Violence is part of their efforts to access the causes of violence within the youth community in the country especially when the country is gearing towards 2023 general elections.

In his statement, the Public Relations Officer for the National Commission for Democracy Sierra Leone said that political youths are supposedly young men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 years who are fully involved in the operations of the State and non-state institutions in the context of party politics and youth groups, among others and that whether as members of a political party or movement or as activists or as members of a youth organization, political youths have a certain level of consciousness with implications for the governance of the State at all levels.

He stated that the reality on the ground speaks volumes about the negative participation of young folks as much more is expected of them as they change mindsets and move the destiny of their beloved motherland in the right direction, furthering that it must be remarked that as political parties youth leaders in the Western Area in particular and the entire country in general, they owe it to their beloved motherland to contribute their quota to peacebuilding and state building starting with their locality and the group they belong to or are part of.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mohamed Orman Bangura commended the move by the All Political Parties Youth Association in order stage a one-day sensitization of youth leaders in the Western Area on the effect of Political Violence in the country.

He pointed out that time in Politics is a very short time of which he said politics should not be used to divide the country.

The Minister further commented on the Criminal Procedures Acts which he said should be amended as there are a lot of young people in Correctional Centers due to minor crimes.

He used the opportunity to call on all youths across the country to endeavor to preach peace adding that at this moment it is important that all Sierra Leoneans should put hands on deck in order to promote peace in the country.

Other stakeholders present also made similar statement on the significance of the one-day sensitization of youth leaders in the Western Area on the effect of political violence in the country.

On their part, youth representatives of Political Parties present at the event commended the All Political Parties Youth Association for bringing them together as youth leaders in the Western Area on the effect of political violence in the country. They assured all that they will cascade the knowledge they have acquired to their various political parties.
