PAVI Fort Faces Unfounded Criticism Amid Road Construction Challenges

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Sierra Leone’s renowned road construction company, PAVI Fort, is facing unjust criticism as it undertakes a major road construction project in Kabala District. The company, known for its competency and quality work, has encountered unforeseen challenges due to unpredictable weather conditions, which led to some issues in the ongoing project. Additionally, heavy rainfall caused damage to the newly-constructed Sani Abacha Street, further fueling doubts about the company’s effectiveness.

Despite the setbacks, PAVI Fort’s management has swiftly re-strategized to address the affected areas and resume work as soon as possible. However, critics on social media have questioned the company’s credibility and the government’s expertise in handling such projects.

In response, a spokesman for PAVI Fort defended the company, stating that the challenges faced during the project are not solely due to its performance but are rooted in broader issues with the city’s layout and drainage system. Freetown’s expansion problems, deforestation, and improper waste disposal contribute to flooding and subsequent road damages during the rainy season.

To mitigate future challenges, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) is considering a shift from asphalt to concrete for road surfacing, aiming to improve durability and weather resistance. PAVI Fort remains committed to completing the Sani Abacha Street project successfully despite the unexpected obstacles.

As the debate continues, it is crucial to acknowledge the complex factors affecting road construction and the need for sustainable solutions to transform Sierra Leone’s major township roads.
