By Abubakarr Harding

In a fervent effort to align with the divine will for the nation, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Sierra Leone (PFSL) convened a one-day prayer meeting on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the Youyi Building compound in Freetown.

In his exhortation, PFSL President and General Overseer of Living Word of Faith Outreach, Int. Bishop Akintayo Sam-Jolly, emphasized its significance as a prayer initiative known as the Solemn Assembly. The event brought believers together to lift their voices on the prayer altar, interceding on behalf of the nation.

The focus of the assembly was  threefold encompassing Prayer Approach involving Thanksgiving, Repentance and Supplication. Bishop Sam-Jolly underscored the importance of supplication, specifically the prayer of warfare aimed at resisting the voice of the devil and ensuring the fulfillment of God’s will for the nation.

Highlighting the nationwide scope of the prayer meeting, Bishop Sam-Jolly mentioned that simultaneous gatherings were taking place in all sixteen districts. He expressed concern that it would be a disservice to the church if believers allowed the activities of the devil to prevail without actively engaging in prayer.

Addressing the common reluctance to prayer in Sierra Leone, Bishop Sam-Jolly urged against complacency and emphasized the need for continuous prayer, referencing Isaiah 62:5-7 from the Bible. He noted that historical challenges, including War, Ebola, and COVID-19, were overcome through prayer.

Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, commended PFSL for its dedicated efforts to maintain national peace and in fulfilling God’s purpose. She acknowledged the necessity of prayer intervention for Sierra Leone, expressing gratitude for the initiative during a time when divine guidance was crucial.

Minister Karminty, whose Ministry is centered on welfare, emphasized the Government’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the nation. As the nation collectively turned to prayer, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Sierra Leone demonstrated its unwavering commitment to fostering unity, resilience, and divine intervention for the well-being of the nation.

This launch is part of a pilot phase programme aimed at introducing MIDAS and enhancing border management capabilities in Sierra Leone.

Christos Christodulides, the IOM Head of Office, highlighted the genesis of the project during the launch. In January 2022, IOM initiated the ‘Strengthening the Border Management Capacity of the Government of Sierra Leone’ Project, backed by support from the IOM Development Fund. The two-year project focused on deploying MIDAS systems at the Gbalamuya Border Crossing Point and the Immigration headquarters, contributing to the formulation of the National Integrated Border Management Strategy for Sierra Leone. Mr. Kanneh stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of collected traveler information for national security.

Rtd. Major General David T.O Taluva, the Minister of Internal Affairs, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone for IOM’s support in realizing President Bio’s Integrated Border Management System priorities. He outlined plans for collaboration with Guinea’s Internal Affairs Minister and underscored the MIDAS system’s crucial role in strengthening national borders.

With the operationalization of the MIDAS System at the Gbalamuya Border, the Internal Affairs Minister expressed confidence in the government’s ability to collect, process, store, and analyze travel information in real-time, adhering to personal data protection laws. He emphasized the system’s potential to enhance the Sierra Leone Immigration Department’s monitoring capabilities, providing an effective tool for cross-checking and managing security risks. President Bio Pledges Swift Action on Parliamentary Crisis

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In an engagement with Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Parliamentarians during a Private Dinner held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, President Julius Maada Bio addressed ongoing challenges within the party. Despite a busy schedule, the President assured members of his intention to intervene this week, demonstrating his commitment to resolving parliamentary issues.

The primary concern centers around the investigation of the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Paran Tarawally, and his wife by the Anti-Corruption Commission for alleged corruption. This was more so as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has clarified that Abibatu Paran Tarawally, the wife of the Clerk of Parliament received a salary for nineteen months between September 2021 and March 2023 when her name was removed from the Parliamentary payroll and not the ten months that they mentioned earlier in their Press Release.

In the same light, the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Abass Bundu, publicly emphasized evidence of conflict of interest, embezzlement and corruption within the parliamentary administration. He said the allegations of sexual harassment against him are to divert public attention from the grave allegations against the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Paran Tarawally, and his wife.

“You cannot use the argument of morality to undercut the law when evidence abounds that legal abuse of office, conflict of interest, embezzlement, and corruption is rupturing the administration of Parliament,” he said in a post on social media reacting to allegations of sexual harassment against him.

President Bio’s proactive approach underscores his dedication to transparency and accountability within the SLPP. As the investigations unfold, the nation closely watches the potential impact on Sierra Leone’s political landscape. The private dinner served as a platform for the president to reassure SLPP Parliamentarians of his commitment to resolving internal challenges and upholding good governance principles.

The president said he has been busy with other things but will get involved this week to try to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Francis Ben Kaifala, will be addressing the media today, 24th January, 2024  and he is expected to announce some indictments on recent high-profile investigations.

As for now, Hon. Paran Tarawally and his wife are on bail for alleged corruption, including abuse of office following the recruitment of his wife as a member of Parliament.

The wife has already returned NLe131,000 as part of the salary she received when working as a Human Resources Officer at Parliament, according to the ACC.

Choithram International Foundation Awards Scholarship Grants to 264 Pupils

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

Choithram International Foundation has awarded scholarship grants to a total of two hundred and sixty-four (264) pupils from various schools across the country, comprising primary school pupils and those in Junior and Senior Secondary schools in the country, with the bulk from Freetown, on the 23rd January, 2024. The first batch of beneficiaries, in this annual event, received their scholarship grants on the 23rd January, 2024 while the final batch will receive theirs on Wednesday, the 24th January, 2024.

Present during the ceremony were the Financial Controller of Choithram Group, Harish Agnani, Chairperson of the Choithram Trust Fund Committee, Easterline Palmer, Secretary to the Committee-Williette Williams, the beneficiaries, their parents and members of the Press.

In his address, Harish Agnani welcomed all to the annual event which he disclosed was initiated since 1967 by Pa Choithram and since that time it had been held uninterruptedly, even during turbulent times like the outbreaks of Ebola and COVID-19. He extended special thanks to the Choithram International Foundation for holding the fort and for being so steadfast.

The Financial Controller disclosed that this year the scholarship fund was increased to a whooping sum of Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand New Leones (NLe250,000), which previously would have been Le 250 Million, simply because they were keen on increasing the number of pupils that should benefit.

He made it categorically clear that the scholarship gesture falls under the ambit of the Choithram Groups’ Corporate Social Responsibility. “Although it is known that the ruling Government is paying fees for pupils under the Free Quality Education Programme, we, however, thought it fitting that our gesture will complement the Government’s initiative and also empower parents to secure uniforms, bags, shoes and most importantly avail their kids with transport fares,” he stated.

He, also, entreated the parents to make good use of the opportunity and monitor their children to ensure that they concentrate on their educational pursuits further emphasizing the importance of education to individual growths and the nation’s development.

Harish Agnani emphasized that the scholarship scheme is mainly meant to benefit Sierra Leoneans exclusively also highlighting that when once a beneficiary falls below expectation by failing in school the scholarship will automatically be withdrawn.

According to him, the Choithram International Foundation is also supporting the Choithram Memorial Hospital disclosing how they have recently installed a MRI Machine at the hospital which, he said, will soon become operational and accessible to members of the public. He also pointed out that during the last two weeks doctors from Germany did over 60 surgeries at no cost to patients adding that the Choithram Charity Trust also supplies foodstuff to Old People’s and Children’s Homes every month.

Chairperson of the Choithram Charity Trust Fund Committee, Easterline Palmer, in her brief statement thanked the Chief Administrator for all what they are doing underscoring that the scholarship offer is just part of what the bigger things they are doing for the country.

She revealed that the committee’s work is one that is tedious disclosing that in order to avoid an influx of applicants they deviated to use the mass medium to put out notices. Instead, she continued, they decided to use another transparent means of asking schools which they believe have needy and vulnerable pupils, to provide them a list of those pupils.

Easterline Palmer revealed how they have forms that the applicants should fill and from the information they receive they will look for pupils who are vulnerable especially those coming from extreme poor parental backgrounds. She reiterated that the monies offered are meant to buy uniforms, books and for provision of transport fares.

According to her the beneficiaries of this year’s scholarship are a blend of continuing pupils, who excelled last year in their academic work and new applicants.

The Chairperson concluded that before dishing out the grants the beneficiaries were asked to present their letters of offer, results and passport pictures for proper identification maintaining that the pupils, not their parents, must sign for their monies.

She thanked the Choithram Foundation for the humanitarian gesture further admonishing parents of pupils in higher levels to ensure that their children write letters of thanks so that the Foundation members will become aware that they are making an impact. “Primary school pupils will receive the sum of NLe 800, Junior Secondary pupils NLe900 and Senior Secondary School Pupils NLe1, 000,” she also disclosed.

In her closing remarks, the Secretary to the Choithram Charity Trust Committee, Williette Williams,  made a passionate appeal to the parents for the timely submission of the children’s Report or Progress Cards or Results in order to aid the Committee to do its processing work timely. She affirmed that failure to do so could lead to a beneficiary losing an opportunity. She thanked and appreciated all the pupils that are doing well and informed parents to make sure that their children concentrate on their studies.

According to her the Foundation has awarded scholarships to pupils in the provinces but was quick to state that the majority of beneficiaries are from Freetown.

Williette thanked the Foundation for making the scheme possible underscoring how the disabled, slum kids are benefiting. On success stories, she mentioned how some of those who benefitted from the scholarship are today lawyers, a contractor , others in influential positions who came back to say thanks.

The highpoint of the programme was the handing over of the cheque by Harish Agnani to the Chairperson, Easterline Palmer, in the presence of the beneficiaries, parents and members of the Press.
