SLRSA Deputy Executive Director Takes Road Safety To Mile 38 Police

As it continues its sensitization drive the Deputy Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), Ibrahim Sannoh, has engaged senior Police Management at the Mile 38 check point, on road safety and the need to enforce all road safety laws to reduce the spate of road accident.
This came in the wake of the high rate of death caused by road accidents and road traffic crashes, according to a recent data, which the SLRSA Deputy Executive Director says accounts for over five hundred deaths every year.
The Deputy Executive Director said his visit was deliberate and aimed at effectively and efficiently engaging the traffic police and other road users to support the SLRSA in achieving a national road safety.
Whilst addressing cross section of the Sierra Leone Police, Military personnel, Road safety corps and forestry guards, he said overloading, drink driving, over speeding, lack of triangular reflectors in case of breakdown , defected lights and use of jerry cans as fuel tanks for trailers are responsible for major accidents in the country.
“Under the New Direction, our responsibility is to safeguard our citizens,” he said, adding that “we were appointed by His Excellency Julius Maada Bio to fulfil our promise in having a better and a well secured road network and transport system.”
He said they cannot work in isolation that is why they are partnering with key stakeholders like the forces to enforce the law and ensure that users strictly abide by all laws legislated in the country.
According to him, the police and the road safety corps are always on the streets to ensure road safety, but road traffic crashes are still on the increase. This ugly trend, he said, must be reversed as “the life of every Sierra Leonean despite his or her social status is equally important.”
Despite the challenges confronted by the Authority, Mr. Sannoh said they have established thirteen offices across the country in order to achieve the Authority’s mandate. He assured that he will continue to engage the traffic police and sensitize the road users especially the commercial drivers.
The SLRSA boss registered his Authority’s commitment on incentives and other emoluments for border or check point staff to motivate them in the discharge of their duties.
The Deputy Inspector General of police in charge of Traffic Management and Road Safety, Sahr Senesie, said they have a duty to their citizens and the State. He admonished that they should not compromise their integrity which is key in upholding the fundamental principles in policing. He appealed that, “we should be our brothers’ keeper.”
The personnel expressed similar sentiments in showering praises on the SLRSA’s Deputy Executive Director and said that his leadership style is second to none since the establishment of the Authority.

Africell Offers Support to Diamond Stars FC

In continuation of its sponsorship of Sierra Leone’s 2019 Premier League, the country’s leading Telecommunications Company, Africell, on Friday 22nd March 2019, officially signed an MOU with the Diamond Stars Football Club to carry its brand on its jerseys. This event marks the 5th signing with clubs in the on-going 2019 Premier League.
Present at the ceremony were the Team Manager of the Diamond Stars FC, Adam Tommy, Vice Chairman, Mark Yambasu, Secretary General of the FC Sahr Ezra Kellie, Africell’s Nancy L. Joseph, Manager of AfriRadio, John Konte and members of the press.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the meeting, Abdul Karim of AfriRadio, said that Africell’s support to the development of young people in the country is unbelievable. It has been engaged in the promotion of young talents in the country and the meeting is a testimony of this commitment on the part of the company to continue to promote youths. He stressed that it is the first time in the history of telecommunication that a company has embarked on technical and financial support to clubs in the premier league, adding that this is due to the belief that the company has in the youths of the country. He also disclosed that Africell, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Premier League Board, have ensured the revamping of the league, which is on-going in the country.
Speaking on behalf of Africell, the manager of AfriRadio, John Konte, told the audience that Africell is here to stay. The company, he maintained, is committed to promote and showcase the talents of youths in the country, adding that Africell has been sponsoring various youths in various spheres. Starting with Music, Africell has signed several artists as Brand Ambassadors and also artists in other sectors in the entertainment industry.
After the Ebola, he disclosed, the company noticed that the entertainment industry, especially music had dropped and cognizant of the fact that Sierra Leoneans love music, they came on board to revamp the music industry and today Sierra Leonean music is heard everywhere in the country and beyond. It is the avowed aim of the company to come close to anything that Sierra Leoneans love that has prompted their involvement in the on-going premier league. It goes without saying that the population love music and football; with the latter being almost like a religion. Sierra Leoneans, he maintained, follow football with their hearts and resources and in order to bring them closer, Africell has embraced what they love; football.
John Konte further stated that 4 Premier League football teams have been sponsored and MOUs signed, namely: East End Lion FC, Bo Rangers FC, Old Edwardians FC and Mighty Black Pool FC.
He recalled February during a similar signing ceremony pointing out that this is not the end as Africell will embrace more Premier League Clubs and this event is a testimony of this commitment. John Konte then announced the sponsorship of the Diamond Stars FC of Kono, which will entail an undisclosed amount of cash plus 2 sets of jerseys to the team. He recognised that the team wears its traditional yellow and black in its home encounters, Green and white on its away matches.
The jerseys whilst having the club’s colours will have the names and numbers of the players on it and the club’s logo plus an Africell logo. This will further bring the supporters and the people of Kono closer, especially as the company has a huge subscriber base in the district. This move is to keep Africell in the centre of what the people love. The company is not interested in what the club makes financially, only that it should fly its logo in every encounter to buttress the point that the company is at the centre of what the people love. John Konte further stated that this signing is not the end, more clubs will be sponsored, as it is the avowed aim of the company to promote football and empower the youths.
Adam Tommy, Team Manager of Diamond Stars FC and former player in the national Team (the finest right-back that the Leone Stars has ever produced), expressed appreciation to the company for this kind gesture, adding that Africell occupies the physical space and has done a lot to develop the game and bring people together. On their part they are ready to do all that it takes to promote the game and the company. He admonished Africell to engage other clubs in the Premier League. He also sent a message to other teams that when sponsored, they should endeavor to fly the company’s logo high and maintain the ideals of fair play and good sportsmanship. The jerseys, he went on, will be replicated with the company’s logo during the course of the league. He praised Africell for coming on board to help the government in the development of football in the country, as it not only provides entertainment for the public, but creates job opportunities for the players.
Vice Chairman of the team, Mark Yambasu and Secretary General Sahr Ezra Kellie, shared similar sentiments, adding that Africell made no mistake in choosing them, especially as the subscriber base in Kono is huge and with the logo on their jerseys, supporters of the club will feel part of the company.
The ceremony was climaxed by the signing of the MOU between the club and Africell officials. The vote of thanks was given by Nancy L Joseph of Africell.

Premier League Continues to be Interesting

Under the capable and astute leadership of one of the most industrious and humanitarian Lawyer Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai the Premier League continues to be very interesting.
Recently, he presented trophies to the Press and the general public, a presentation which was geared towards serving as a motivation for all participating teams as they are so attractive that any winner in this league will forever remember the history created in the rebirth of Sierra Leone football after four years.
Thirteen (13) teams are currently competing for the title race with every team displaying artistry, brilliance and drama. The Sierra Leone Premier league has brought together over 300,000 spectators across the nation and it has generated billions of Leones which has directly benefited participating teams.
In a well attended Press Conference lawyer Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai disclosed that the winner of this Premier League will take home the sum of One hundred and fifty million Leones (Le 150,000,000) and golden medals and the runner up will walk home with cash prize and silver medals.

Every premier league team has been given the sum of Le50,000,000 from the cash provided by the Government of Sierra Leone and in the second leg of the league participating teams will also be provided with some cash to aid them in running administrative cost.

The Premier League is really here.

RMFA deducted the USD5 Million Alleged to Be Owed Govt. by Gento

Mohamed Gento Kamara

It is most unfortunate that Sierra Leoneans generally love to see the downfall of their hard-working brothers and sisters. What we love to hear about others is not the good things that they do on behalf of the country and their fellow citizens.
A disgusted former President Kabbah after carefully observing this malignant malice among us Sierra Leoneans commented ‘Salone man get bad heart’.
The pull-him-down syndrome is destroying hard working Sierra Leoneans. Sam King and many patriotic Sierra Leoneans that genuinely sought to contribute to economic recovery are leaking their wounds after been pulled down by their enemies and detractors. MIK who was operating a Foreign Exchange Bureau was also destroyed as well as Med T of the Wanword International fame was destroyed. The elder brother of Chief Minister Professor Francis, Paul Francis, suffered a stroke because of such ill-treatment at the hands of fellow Sierra Leoneans who hated him for his pioneering entrepreneurial strides.
In the same vein, without shifting the chaff from the grain, enemies and detractors of Mohamed Gento Kamara have inundated social media with the erroneous claim that the roads contractor cannot account for the whopping sum of USD5 million.
The fact of the matter is that, what was not stated is that, it was the Roads Maintenance Fund Agency and the Ministry of Finance that failed to do proper reconciliation.
There was a memorandum of understanding wherein, SLRA which is the parent body of RMFA agreed to fund roads contractors on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone.
The USD5 million in question is very easy to explain. SLRA through RMFA was to pay Gento 30 percent advance for the Waterloo township roads project. The amount should have been Le12.8 billion. Gento received Le7.8 billion.
The balance account remained with RMFA which had the onus of reconciling its books with the Ministry of Finance.
What however emerges from the bad press directed at Gento is that his fellow Sierra Leoneans want to see him go down the drain.
In Nigeria, Dangote was able to become the richest man in Africa because he got sovereign guarantee by the Government of Nigeria to borrow money.
In Guinea, to finance and promote local businesses the Head of State recently borrowed big, up to the tune of over 700 Million dollars, from the international money market to capitalize the local private sector in advancing that country’s local content policy.
On the other hand, in the case of Gento, he singlehandedly attracted the Italian firm FIMET-BETONVILLE to support him in contributing to national development through engaging in the road construction industry.
How many Sierra Leoneans know that in the absence of government funding, Gento soldiered on with the Hill Cut bypass road through self financing.
Any insinuation that Gento Group of Companies owes RMFA is preposterous as he has authentic document to the effect showing the contract signed in December 2015 did not breach any protocols.
What Gento was paid as advance is clearly recorded at the Accountant General department and with his bank. He was to receive USD12.8 million. He received less the USD5 million paid not in dollars but in Leones.
We should as a nation be appreciative of fellow Sierra Leoneans like Gento who have the vision and daring to venture where very few of us do, even those who are very rich.
Gento from very humble beginnings has over the years grown and developed to become one of the largest indigenous employers.
Is that not a cause for celebration?
The point being made is that Gento, during a period when the nation was suffering economically from the Ebola outbreak, continued to faithfully believe in the Government whilst his bankers breathed down his throat for payment of the interest on the heavy overdraft that he had taken out to continue doing the roads whilst awaiting payment from Government.
That notwithstanding, Gento has documentary evidence that in 2017, Ministry of Finance recovered the money. What is not said at one of the Commissions of Inquiry is that RMFA wanted the money paid by the Ministry of Finance as cash payment into RMFA account.
Gento has said that is why he is very pleased with this Government introducing the Single Treasury Account as it now centralizes all Government accounts making it very easy to track payments into Government coffers.
He concluded that he was invited by the Commission of Inquiry to just help in the ongoing investigation which he successfully did with documentation but he was not called as a suspect as some have perceived.
He reiterated that it is totally wrong to pull down progressive individuals who are making meaningful contributions towards national development.

NP-SL Ltd is Spreading its Branches

Nobody can contest the indisputable fact that the National Petroleum (NP) Sierra Leone Limited is a success story being a formidable business entity that is greatly contributing to overall national development. It is one of the buoyant business entities that is completely owned by Sierra Leoneans having no foreigner or politician as shareholder which makes it purely an indigenous company, From its humble beginning in this country, NP can now boast of having branches in Liberia, Ivory and other parts in the West African sub-region. The company has demonstrated to the world that indeed Sierra Leoneans can be efficient entrepreneurs as well as sending the message that this country is a safe haven for investment,
The number of jobs and taxes that NP has offered and is paying has helped and still continues to help to make development interventions more possible, When we talk of poverty reduction and improving standards of living then the company has been helping directly and indirectly in those directions,
There is no doubt that human existence could not really be comfortable in the absence of petroleum products. We need fuel to run our vehicles, our generators, there is need for gas to be utilized for cooking purposes, kerosene is used for different purposes, NP SL Ltd is a leading entity that makes easy accessibility to these various petroleum products possible, Management of the company always ensures that these products are readily available in order to prevent occurrence of shortage. The company really deserves a pat on the back when cognizance is taken of the fact that it is customer friendly as it is a cardinal part of their mantra is optimizing customer satisfaction,
Talking with a University of Sierra Leone Economics Lecturer , he noted that because of the selflessness and commitment of those who opted to buy the company when the Government decided to sell it 23 years ago, NP has been able to empower more than 350,000 Sierra Leoneans, build 38 stations countrywide as part of the many accomplishments it has registered.
One unique thing about the company is that it is very innovative and matching with latest technology and devices .This characteristic is very evident in NP making use of latest transparent pumping machines, smart cards to purchase fuel, making it convenient for consumers as well as having sound tankers that transport fuel to different parts of the country.
|” I am very proud of the National Petroleum Company because it is offering a lot in terms of development, making this country very much attractive,” a Development Consultant remarked adding that most should borrow a leaf from the entity,
Certain customers interviewed at a particular Filling station intimated that availing customers the opportunity to purchase basic items in their mini marts is making life comfortable as it minimizes hassling to go so in trying to access shops especially when cognizance is taken of the fact that most times there is overcrowding in town and parking spaces are limited.
Starting as a small entity and through effective management the National Petroleum Company is growing by leaps and bounds with presence in other parts of West Africa making Sierra Leone standing tall, This a clear testimony of dogged commitment and steadfastness showing that success can be achieved through selflessness.

Brewery Praised for Providing Clean Water in Communities

Statistically, it has been established that there is an estimated 2.1 billion people who lack access to safe water and have the ability to pay for safe water.
The Sierra Leone Brewery as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility to the Wellington community where it operates has done so for communities including the Peacock Farm community which has been a great help to women and children.
Gender mainstreaming in the water sector could help to fix water issues and address the lack of gender parity. Empowering women to participate requires specific actions to reform policy, build capacity and fund these initiatives.
It is important for stakeholders and particularly policy makers, Government, multilaterals and other funders to invest in women by addressing the societal reforms needed — investing in training and capacity-building programs for women, providing equal access to resources, and supporting the continued building of an evidence base to look at water more directly and closely through the gender lens. When such actions are taken there is the possibility to realize an equitable solution to one of the most pressing global issues of our time.
Expanding safe water and women’s participation in its provision through small water enterprises — businesses that provide safe, reliable, affordable water to communities in need — increases economic opportunity for women, benefits communities and contributes to the health and well-being of families which is exactly what the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited has been doing .
Water scarcity poses ‘fundamental risk to stability,’ new report finds. Water scarcity can for example strain food production systems. When affordable and safe water supply exists in a community, women and girls have more time to engage in other activities, including education and employment. It opens avenues for greater income generation and a better quality of life, including better health and nutrition.
It takes an innovative corporate social responsibility initiative, combined with support from the proactive local administration, to enable women to be in charge of their own access to safe, affordable water.
Brewery’s provision of safe water to communities have greatly helped to reduce typhoid and other water-related diseases., less spending on medical expenses, overall improved health, more income saved for the family, improved quality of family life, more time for other household activities, improved financial situation at home, and improved life for the community. With the clean water provided by Brewery, the results are further amplified — with economic and societal benefits to families and communities where Brewery has extended the service to.
The solution to the water crisis in the Western Area and the entire country is not simple and along with the potential benefits, there are also challenges. Small water enterprises can play a significant role in improving women’s lives, but women have not been sufficiently “mainstreamed” in the water sector.
General, the challenges of safe water are nothing new to women around the world, particularly those in low- and middle-income countries. Women and girls disproportionately bear the burden of caring for their families and collecting water. In households without access to water on premises, women are responsible for 80 percent of water collection. Globally, women spend 200 million hours every day collecting water.
We know that women-owned SMEs face unique and significant hurdles in starting and growing their businesses across much of the world. Women are often shut out by financial institutions. Unfavourable business and regulatory environments, along with a lack of networks, knowledge, and links to high-value markets, further constrain female entrepreneurship.
More evidence is needed to understand the difficulties and challenges that women face with small water enterprises. However, it is known that these include cultural constraints, lack of role models, limited access to information and resources and a lack of training and technical skills.
Contributing positively to improve standards of living forms part of Brewery’s Corporate Social Responsibility and it is doing so commendably.

“We don’t trust the Judiciary”… APC MPs Says

Members of Parliament of the main Opposition All People’s Congress Party have expressed serious disappointment over the Sierra Leone Judiciary saying that they do not have any trust in the Chief Justice and the courts.
They made this statement within Parliament building at Tower Hill after they came from the court to have the judgment on a petition that it filed some time ago.
According to Hon. Lahai Marrah, on behalf of the APC MPs, that they did not have any iota confidence or trust in the judiciary system. He further told newsmen that according to the petition Act no petition case should not exceed 4 months without hearing taking place but in their case it has been in the Court for the past 8 months which, he said, is tantamount to injustice to them and the people they are representing.
He further informed that the Government is using the Judiciary to intimidate them whenever there are heated debates bordering on failure to fast track development of the country.
He added that when they become so vociferous that is the time the Court will call on them, noting that on Friday they were informed by their lawyers that they should be in court but when they went there to see the Chief Justice he told them that they were to get the ruling today in the matter that is in the Appeals Court but one of the judges was reportedly sick .
Hon. Marrah reiterated that the Chief Justice pleaded with them to be patient as they will communicate to them in the shortest possible time “The reason why we don’t have confidence and trust in the Judiciary and the Chief Justice is because he was the one that filed a case against the MPs which is why he was compensated as Chief Justice,” he lamented.
Hon. Lahai Marrah, concluded that the matter has been thrown out by the Judges in the North saying that there is no substance in the petition and later another they filed the case in Freetown noting that they also filed a petition against the SLPP MPs but was kept under the carpet. “If the ruling goes against MPs they will all leave their seats and allow the SLPP to continue running their government,” he threatens.
Hon. Daniel Koroma, also told newsmen that when a petition case is filed in a court it should be heard within 4 months after which judgment should be given.
“Let the Government hands off the Judiciary so that the court will be independent as it used to be in the past,” he suggested.
He said they are ready at any time they are called upon by the court to go emphasising that the APC party is a united and strong party and they will continue to be in unity till the next general elections.

Accelerated Pace of Housemates Salone is Terrific

The pace at which the 2019 Housemates Salone Reality TV Show is climaxing is highly noticeable as it is becoming keenly competitive as the mates in the House are trying to outdo themselves in order to lure members of the public to vote for them through Africell No 5500. The live Reality Show, which is shown on AYV Television (Channel 38), is indeed a novelty in this country for which the organizers AYV Media Empire and Africell have been widely commended as they continue to add value to the entertainment industry,
Again, putting aside a whooping sum of Le100, 000,000 as the star prize seemingly is very unbelievable but there is no doubt that at the end of the day the lucky winner will be handed that amount
For now all the Housemates must captivatingly, display nudity, strong language and humour. Doing so successfully will put anyone of them in the limelight and lure more votes which is why all of them are doing their best in order to be endearing.
The competition is all about empowerment of the young Housemates through polishing their characters, attitudes, ability to interact so that at the end of the day they become transformed individuals.
AYV, under the stewardship of Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Anthony Navo, has been very notable for empowering young people and make them relevant in society. It is this passion the CEO has which could likely be one of the motivating driving factors that led AYV to team up with Africell to organize the 2019 Housemates Salone Reality TV Show.
Though some may want to argue that the empowerment that the participants are benefitting from is not a prolonged one but the fact remains that they are indeed learning new skills, Even those who have been evicted are somehow transformed.
One good thing about the Reality TV Show is that it has penetrated a beam on all the participants and as the world is watching someone somewhere may have spotted those Housemates that are truly talented and there is a possibility that they may want to tap those talents and make good use of them.

If in reality the show is very much interesting it is the role being played by the intriguing Invisible Chief with the commanding baritone voice giving intermittent instructions to the Housemates to carry out certain assignments or to ask them to articulate themselves well by responding to questions posed.

Though the program is principally a social one where the participants are expected to display nudity, strong language and humour yet it is a learning pad. The Housemates are taken through various motivational lectures on how to live positive lifestyles,

What is certain as of now is that the ongoing close locked battle is an affair among the remaining ten who must convincingly woo the public to vote for them via Africell No 5500. The more the merrier!
As the show continues, the House is getting hotter and viewers are enjoying every bit of it.
