The firearm, along with six live rounds of ammunition, was reportedly found in the possession of Ali Jaffal.

The accused, appearing for the second time in court, faced six counts of charges related to the possession of arms and ammunition without a license, as well as control of small arms without proper authorization. These charges are in violation of the laws of Sierra Leone.

According to the indictments, Ali Jaffal was allegedly found in possession of a Makarov pistol without a license at the Young Sports Club (YSC) facility on Wilkinson Road in Freetown on April 6, 2024. Additionally, he was accused of possessing six 9+19 millimeter rounds of ammunition without proper authorization on the same date and location.

Citing Tribalism and Regional Discrimination… Susan Bona Resigns from the All-People’s Congress (APC)

Susan Bona.jpg

By Alvin Lansana Kargbo

Susan Bona, once a prominent figure in the All-People’s Congress (APC) Party, has tendered her resignation on April 27, 2024 in a significant turn of events. The former APC heavy weight who vied for the party’s flag bearer position in the 2023 elections, highlighted profound reasons behind her resignation, citing a departure from the party’s core values and escalating tribal tensions.

In her resignation letter addressed to Mr. Lansana Dumbuya Esq., the Secretary-General of the APC, Bona underscored her deep commitment to the party since her affiliation in 2011. However, she lamented a noticeable shift in the party’s dynamics, signaling a departure from its once cherished values.

Central to Bona’s decision were the escalating tribal hate speech and regional discrimination within the APC ranks, particularly targeting the Mende and Kono tribes. She expressed her inability to tolerate such divisive rhetoric any longer, emphasizing the paramount importance of prioritizing the peace and stability of Sierra Leone above all else.

Bona’s resignation underscores a growing concern within the APC regarding internal strife and discord. She criticized the leadership’s inaction in addressing these critical issues, noting a significant diversion from the party’s founding principles of respect and unity.

Acknowledging her journey within the APC, Bona expressed gratitude to key party figures, including former President Ernest Koroma, former Secretary-General and current Deputy Chairman Yansanch, and Chairman Minkailu Mansaray. She also extended her appreciation to her supporters and team, recognizing their unwavering dedication.

In her closing remarks, Bona offered apologies to those impacted by her departure while affirming her commitment to a future aligned with her values and vision for Sierra Leone.

The resignation of Susan Bona signals a critical juncture for the APC, prompting reflections on internal unity and the preservation of core principles amidst growing discord. As Sierra Leone prepares for its political landscape, Bona’s departure serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges facing the nation’s quest for national cohesion and progress.

Guma Dam Embankment Set Ablaze: Threat to Freetown’s Water Supply

Guma Dam.jpg

By Esther Wright

The tranquillity of the forests surrounding the Guma Dam was shattered on April 27th, 2024, when nefarious actors deliberately ignited a blaze, threatening Freetown’s vital water source. This brazen act of destruction not only endangers the dam’s immediate stability but also poses grave risks to the well-being of the city’s residents.

As the primary water supplier to Freetown, the Guma Valley Water Company Dam stands as a lifeline for over one million people. However, encroachments and deforestation in its vicinity have heightened concerns about its sustainability. The recent incident underscores the vulnerability of this critical infrastructure.

The implications of this deliberate act are dire and far-reaching. Foremost is the risk of disrupting water supply, potentially triggering a humanitarian crisis with profound impacts on public health, sanitation, and food security. The sudden scarcity of water could disrupt daily life and industrial operations, exacerbating existing challenges.

Moreover, the destruction of the dam embankment heightens the threat of downstream flooding, particularly in densely populated areas of Freetown. Such inundation could result in loss of life, displacement, and economic hardship, compounding the city’s vulnerabilities.

Beyond immediate concerns, the aftermath of a potential dam failure would entail long-term environmental and socio-economic consequences. Contamination of water sources, infrastructure damage, and economic disruptions would hinder recovery efforts and strain resources, prolonging the city’s recovery.

To address this urgent threat, concerted action is needed to safeguard critical infrastructure and enhance resilience. Measures to prevent sabotage, improve emergency preparedness and diversify water sources are essential to mitigate risks and ensure water security for Freetown.

Furthermore, fostering a culture of community engagement and environmental stewardship is crucial in promoting shared responsibility for resources like the Guma Dam. By uniting efforts to protect and preserve vital lifelines, Freetown can build resilience against adversity and secure a sustainable future.

It must be noted that the deliberate burning of the Guma Dam embankment serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of essential infrastructure and the urgent need for collective action to address threats to water security. Only through concerted efforts can Freetown mitigate risks and safeguard the well-being of its residents.
