Aid Pioneers enables production of over 12.000 menstrual hygiene underwear kits for young women in Sierra Leone

Aid Pioneers sent over two tons of flannel to Sierra Leone in February for the production of menstrual hygiene underwear kits

Aid Pioneers e.V. celebrates another major success: the transportation of over two tons of flannel to Sierra Leone, West Africa to their long-term cooperation partner Uman Tok for the production of over 12.000 menstrual hygiene underwear kits.

The Sierra Leonean NGO Uman Tok produces menstrual hygiene underwear kits to enable young women to attend school or work during their periods, reducing the number of days absent due to menstruation. Aid Pioneers has supported Uman Tok not only in matters of funding and project planning, but also in the transportation over two tons of flannel, the main component of the kits, necessary to produce over 12.000 menstrual hygiene underwear kits due to local scarcity.

With the powerful support of Uman Tok, Aid Pioneers was also able to deliver life-saving medical materials to Freetown for the first time within 6 days in reaction to the tanker explosion in November 2021. In the course of this, Aid Pioneers was able to build further partnerships locally, especially with regional hospitals.

Four Aid Pioneers team members from Germany, Ann-Sophie Semer, Johanna Körner, Julian Adler and Alexis Broschek, were able to meet in person in Sierra Leone in February with the inspiring women and men behind Uman Tok, who make this NGO such a remarkable organisation.

The team was also able to learn about the entire underwear production process in detail. With this newly gained expertise, Aid Pioneers aims to continue to actively support the growth of the NGO Uman Tok, working together to positively impact the lives of even more young women in Sierra Leone and improve gender inequality.

During their stay, the team also visited the 34 Military Hospital, the Connaught Hospital, as well as the Ola During Children’s Hospital. It was a great honor for the team to be able to visit these important facilities and to have the opportunity to exchange ideas with the doctors and health care managers on site.

The Aid Pioneers team is already working to expand partnerships in this field and to support the health care system in Freetown by providing locally unavailable medicines and medical equipment.

Thanks to the intensive meetings with representatives of the health sector and embassy, the team was able to gain a deeper problem awareness for the current situation in Sierra Leone. Encouraged by the open-mindedness and the drive of the Sierra Leoneans, Aid Pioneers would like to continue a close exchange with the responsible persons on site in order to expand the projects together.

Aid Pioneers is also looking for additional local organisations that need support with their projects. A specific focus of Aid Pioneers is to support organisations with goods from Europe that are not available locally.

A call for 15 million jobs to be created annually in Africa

April 04, 2022— More than 15 million decent jobs must be created for Africa by 2025 if governments are serious about making a dent in its unemployment crisis, according to a new charter launched today.

The People’s Charter on Jobs in Africa – created by the Jobs Now Africa Coalition as part of its new #JobsNowAfrica Campaign – is an interactive tool designed to outline the scale of the urgent crisis where the public is encouraged to a petition to urge governments and non-state partners to prioritize this pressing issue.

Following a six-month-long consultation process across seven African countries that account for a third of the jobs in the continent, the 40 organizations behind the coalition warned that the continent is at the tipping point of what could be the economic breakthrough from the pandemic, but only if investments are made now to prioritize jobs creation and harness the potential of youth.

With Africa’s population expected to double and reach 2.5 billion people by 2050, Africa’s jobless youth risks casting a shadow over its economic growth. Recent figures from the African Development Bank Group show that while 10 to 12 million youth enter the workforce each year, only 3 million formal jobs are created, leaving more than half of the new entrants into the labour market unemployed.

Without a commitment to effectively tackle the unemployment crisis – such as investing in the tech and digital industries and green jobs opportunities, modernizing agriculture to increase productivity and ensuring the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) – the organizations behind the coalition warn that the continent risk losing out on the next generation of leaders.

Edwin Ikhuoria, Executive Director for Africa at the ONE Campaign, said: “The African continent is facing an unprecedented unemployment crisis that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We cannot afford to keep turning a blind eye to this pressing issue that has fueled the rising instability and insecurity across the region. Many of our youth are discouraged and slowly losing their spark and excitement for the future, andit’s shameful that not more is done to support them. Too much is at stake for us to continue with the current business-as-usual approach. Job creation must not be an afterthought but rather, tackled alongside other priorities such as pandemic recovery, healthcare and education.”

Roy Telewa, Chief Executive Officer at the National Youth Council, Kenya said: “The population of young people is growing faster than the ability of the continent to create job opportunities for them, and the gap is widening. That’s why #JobsNowAfrica is the contemporary discussion to have. How do we harness the growing population of young people to bring about a demographic dividend? Once we’re able to answer that, talking about how we raise incomes in our homes, expand our savings and investment and expand our productivity, #JobsNowAfrica is the solution for young people, to inform strengthening our governments – institutions specifically – to improve our infrastructure and promote near and long term job creation and opportunities for young people in order to bridge the gap between the rising population and viable employment that brings about a demographic dividend for our continent.

Pearl Thusi, South African Actress and Ambassador for the #JobsNowAfrica campaign said: “Africa has been a contradiction for far too long! A rich continent with poor people! We have so many resources but very limited opportunities. We provide the world with raw materials and import finished goods – giving our jobs away to other continents. This has to stop! Before Covid-19, we thought we had a major problem of joblessness, but when the pandemic hit, we saw an increasing crisis of job losses. Africa lost more than 20 million jobs at the peak of the crisis. To the extent that people preferred to be infected than to be hungry because of job loss. Africa needs at least 15 million new decent jobs every year for its young people. Africans have spoken! Quality jobs more than any other issue should be the priority for governments. This is why the #JobsNowAfrica coalition is putting jobs back at the top of the agenda.

The Environmental Youth Empowerment Services-SL through the children’s power project wants to ensure that this program is introduced in schools as a body empowerment subject in primary and nurses schools. The Joy of MoiJoe

I came across Moijoe two years ago, I learned about his story, while he was age one. I grow the passion of kindness for this little innocent half orphan, the mother died two years ago and the father denies accepting him as a child, after getting’s Moijoe’s story the heart of kindness burn in me.

Kindness is the language the deaf can hear and the blind can see Moijoe needs more support to prepare for a world without a mother.

President Xi Jinping Meets with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen

President Xi Jinping met via video link with President Charles Michel of the European Council and President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission in Beijing on the evening of 1st April 2022.

President Xi recalled that he made a suggestion eight years ago for China and Europe to foster a China-EU partnership for peace, growth, reform and civilization. China’s vision remains unchanged. If anything, it has become more relevant under the current circumstances. China and the EU share extensive common interests and a solid foundation for cooperation. Noting the consistency and continuity of China’s EU policy, President Xi called on the EU to form its own perception of China, adopt an independent China policy, and work with China to promote the steady and sustained growth of China-EU relations and to add stabilizing factors to a turbulent world.

President Xi stressed that China and the EU should act as two major forces upholding world peace, and offset uncertainties in the international landscape with the stability of China-EU relations. The two sides need to take the lead in defending the international system with the UN at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and jointly reject the resurrection of rival-bloc mentality and oppose attempts at a new Cold War, with a view to maintaining world peace and stability.

President Xi pointed out that China and the EU should act as two big markets promoting shared development, and deepen economic globalization through open cooperation. China will stay committed to deepening reform and further opening up. China welcomes European business investment and expects the EU to provide a fair, transparent and nondiscriminatory environment for Chinese business investment and development in Europe. The two sides need to seek greater synergy between their development strategies and explore more complementarity between China’s new development philosophy and paradigm and the EU’s trade policy for open strategic autonomy.

President Xi underscored that China and the EU should act as two great civilizations promoting human progress, and meet global challenges through solidarity and collaboration. The two sides need to follow true multilateralism, advocate a vision of global governance featuring the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, continue to spearhead international cooperation on climate change and biodiversity, and work together to defeat COVID-19. China welcomes the EU’s support for and participation in the Global Development Initiative.

President Michel and President von der Leyen said that China is an important force in the world. The EU attaches great importance to China’s international standing and role, and to developing relations with China. China and the EU enjoy a longstanding relationship of mutual benefit. Both sides are committed to defending peace and multilateralism. Under the current international situation, it is vital for the EU and China to increase dialogue and cooperation.

The EU side reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle and expressed its desire for candid exchanges with China to sustain the good momentum of EU-China relations. It also expressed readiness to keep deepening cooperation with China in such fields as economy, trade, investment, energy and green development, to jointly confront global challenges like COVID-19, climate change, and protection of biodiversity and promote world peace, economic growth and common prosperity. The EU will provide support and cooperation for the success of the second part of COP15 in China.

The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. The EU leaders shared their views and propositions on the Ukraine crisis.

President Xi emphasized that China finds it deeply regrettable that the situation in Ukraine has come to where it is today. China’s position on the Ukraine issue is consistent and clear-cut. China always stands on the side of peace and draws its conclusion independently based on the merits of each matter. China calls for upholding international law and universally recognized norms governing international relations, acts in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and advocates the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security.

President Xi shared his views on how to settle the Ukraine crisis under the current circumstances:

First, promoting peace talks. China supports the EU’s efforts toward a political settlement of the Ukraine issue, and has been encouraging peace talks in its own way. Peace talks are the only viable way to prevent an escalation of tensions. The international community should keep creating favorable conditions and environment for the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and make room for political settlement, rather than add fuel to the fire and heighten tensions.

Second, preventing a humanitarian crisis on a bigger scale. China has put forward a six-point initiative on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, provided multiple batches of emergency humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, and sent supplies to European countries receiving large numbers of refugees. China will stay in touch with the EU to prevent a bigger humanitarian crisis.

Third, fostering lasting peace in Europe and the Eurasian continent. The root cause of the Ukraine crisis is the regional security tensions in Europe that have built up over the years. A fundamental solution is to accommodate the legitimate security concerns of all relevant parties. In this day and age, global and regional security frameworks should no longer be built with a Cold War mentality. China supports Europe, especially the EU, in playing a primary role, and supports Europe, Russia, the US and NATO in holding dialogue to face up to the tensions that have built up over the years and find solutions, so as to build a balanced, effective and sustainable security framework in Europe.

Fourth, preventing the regional conflict from magnifying. The Ukraine crisis must be handled properly. One should not take the wrong medicine, or focus on just one aspect of the issue without regard to the rest, or hold the entire world hostage, still less make ordinary people around the world suffer as a result. The more critical the situation, the greater the need to stay levelheaded. The current global economic configuration is the result of longstanding efforts by all countries.

It is an integral whole. Parties should cherish this outcome, and must not let the global economic system be disrupted at will, still less allow attempts to politicize or weaponize the world economy as a tool to serve one’s own agenda, as such attempts will trigger serious crises in global finance, trade, energy, technology, food, industrial and supply chains, among others. Many are worried that the current situation may wipe out the fruits of international economic cooperation gained through decades of efforts.

Should the situation continue to worsen, it may take years, if not decades, to get things back on track. China and the EU need to commit themselves to keeping the situation under control, preventing spillover of the crisis, and, most importantly, keeping the system, rules and foundation of the world economy stable, in order to bolster public confidence. The two sides may carry out coordination and cooperation in this regard.

Leaders of both sides agreed that this has been a candid and in-depth discussion in which the two sides increased mutual understanding and reached common understandings in many areas. They agreed to step up communication and exchanges and keep up coordination and cooperation.

58 Granted Bail for Riotous Conduct & None Reported Dead

Fifty-Eight (58) persons, who were arrested for riotous conduct and its related offences on the 28th March, 2022 during a riot which prevented commercial and private vehicles, commercial tricycles and motor bikes from plying the streets of Freetown, were brought before the Magistrate Court No. 1 on Ross Road in the East End of Freetown.

Among those accused persons were pupils from the Sierra Leone Muslim Congress Secondary School. They appeared in Court on the 30th March, 2022, arraigned before Magistrate Wilbri John.

Before the Court Sessions they were taken to the Cells (holding centers prepared by the Judiciary of Sierra Leone to be used by the correctional centers and the Sierra Leone Police) at Ross Road Magistrates’ Courts. Whilst in detention, some accused persons fainted due to suffocation. Two were asthmatic, according to medical report.

When they fainted, the others started shouting which attracted public attention. They were brought out and family members started crying that their children are dead. The scene became chaotic.

Later, the Magistrate called up the case and they were all granted bail. Two Sureties, Ibrahim Cole, the Principal for the Junior Secondary School Section and Alhaji Mohamed Sallieu Bangura, the Principal for the Senior Secondary School Section facilitated the process to ensure that the bail conditions were fulfilled. They were all contacted and confirmed that all the pupils later recovered in sound health after going through effective treatment.

“I will authoritatively tell you that no pupil died but I can also assure you that those who fainted recovered the same day,” said Ibrahim Cole, the Principal for the Junior Secondary School Section, Sierra Leone Muslim Congress School, adding that, “I even addressed them this morning at the school assembly ground. That social media video claiming that one of our pupils died is false and untrue.”

The school authorities called on members of the public to visit them for further clarification instead of spreading false rumor that a pupil died in Court.

The general public is advised to dismiss the fake social media reports and videos.

UNSRSG & APC Top Guns Discuss Continental, Sub-Regional Political Issues

Erstwhile President, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma has on the 31st March 2022, hosted the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSRSG) for West Africa and the Sahel, Ambassador Mahamet Saleh Annadif, at his Goderich residence in Freetown.

Accompanied by the UN Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone, Dr. Babatunde A. Ahonsi, the SRSG met former President Koroma along with the deputy leader of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC), Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray and the Minority Leader in Parliament, Honourable Chernor Maju Bah.

They discussed several endeavours being undertaken by ECOWAS, the West African Elders Forum, the African Union and other actors relating to the reversal of democratic governance and its ramifications on the peace and stability in West Africa. Following this, former President Koroma and the UNSRSG proceeded to a closed – door meeting.

Former President, Ernest Bai Koroma had similar follow-up meetings last month with the United States Ambassador, United Kingdom High Commissioner and the Head of the European Union Delegation to Sierra Leone.

Barely a year from Sierra Leone’s multi-tier elections in June 2023, these follow-up consultative meetings with Sierra Leone’s international partners could not have been timely in view of the country’s current social and political state of affairs.

Lawyer Rashid Dumbuya Highly Honoured as Most Outstanding FBC Lecturer

The charismatic, result-oriented, pragmatic and God fearing Barrister and Solicitor at Law, Rashid Dumbuya Esq, has been highly recognized and honoured as a most outstanding Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Fourah Bay College during the 1st Annual Academic Staff Association (ASA)- University of Sierra Leone (USL) Awards 2020/21 held at the Amphitheater grounds, Fourah Bay college.

From what this medium understood the award was given in the wake of his almost eight (8) years of relentless and untiring service to the law students at the Faculty of Law, Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.

Receiving the award, the unassuming law lecturer, who is also the Executive Director of Legal Link, through which he has been proffering plausible solutions to societal ills, political and socio-economic national challenges, in an elated mood said: “I return all the glory to the Almighty Jehovah and I thank all the other lecturers in the Faculty of La, who have displayed a deep sense of cosmic responsibility in the transformation and advancement of legal education in Sierra Leone.”

He continued by stating that through their concerted efforts, the Law Department has not only gained the status of a Faculty but has also been given approval by Senate to roll out Master of Laws programmes this year which he maintained is quite revolutionary indeed.

Rashid Dumbuya Esq, informed The Calabash that he is therefore dedicating the prestigious award to all lecturers and students in the Faculty of Law FBC, particularly those students at the LLB1 level for their cooperation and commitment in undertaking great strides towards the development and advancement of the Faculty of Law, Fourah Bay college University of Sierra Leone.

He ended up saying he is grateful to them all and gave Glory to God.

Private Sector Stakeholders Hob-Nob with President Bio at State House

Stakeholders from different business sectors, including the Petroleum Sector, Transport Union, Kekeh and Okada Riders, Chamber of Commerce, Trader’s Union, Importers and manufacturers, and different Civil society groups advocating on trade, on the 1st April 2022 met with President Bio, as part of a series of Government’s continued interface with big players in the economy, to discuss challenges and opportunities that would boost the socio-economic growth of Sierra Leone.

During the well-attended programme, hosted in the State House Gardens, President Bio spoke about a range of issues but started by thanking the business community for their resilience during these ‘tough times’ as he called it.

“I have listened and heard all the challenges from the business community and Government will act appropriately,” he stated further urging Sierra Leoneans to be patriotic and be brand ambassadors for the country.

Representatives of Oil Marketing Companies commended Government for providing foreign exchange for them to do their business during the fuel crisis and the other forms of support that eased their operations during the global crisis.

A representative of the Trader’s Union, Vandi Lansana, commended Government’s effort in supporting traders during the COVID-19 pandemic with the ‘Munafa funds’ and the NaCSA ‘Fet Po’ project. This according to Vandi has changed the lives of many traders.

Other representatives of various sectors delivered similar sentiments and pleaded to Government for more assistance.

The interactive session was hailed by many business people in attendance and many asked that Government continues on that path.

President Bio Unveils $60 Million Health Project With Grant Support from the World Bank

President Julius Maada Bio has on the 1^st April, 2022 launched a $60 million Quality Essential Health Services and Systems Support Project from a grant by the World Bank to support Sierra Leone to actualize universal healthcare objectives.

Dr Austin Demby, Minister of Health and Sanitation, commended the President for his bold move to make Human Capital Development the principal foundation for the country’s national development, adding that that would strongly support the vision of investing in education, health, agriculture and infrastructure.

“His Excellency, since you appointed me Minister of Health and Sanitation a year ago, I have worked tirelessly with the incredible team at the Ministry…and our Development Partners, including the World Bank to not only make significant gains in the health indicators but doing so with a renewed focus on ‘patient/clients-centred care’.

“…we want to see significant changes that would bend the curve in our glide path to the end of the SDGs in 2030, barely eight years from now. Minor cosmetic changes are not going to help us achieve the desired goals. Bold actions now to reduce maternal mortality from 717 per 100,000 to less than 300 per 100,000 in the next two years are the kinds of illustrative examples we are aiming for.

Dr Demby said that the action of the World Bank, the Government of Sierra Leone’s investments and development partners like Partners In Health, would set a path to realizing the nation’s collective vision for the health sector.

World Bank Country Manager, Dr Abdu Muwonge, congratulated the Government and people of Sierra Leone for attaining such a remarkable achievement of securing the huge grant from the Bank for a single project, adding that it was a pleasure and privilege for him to see such a huge gain being made by President Julius Maada Bio and his Government.

“Your Excellency, on behalf of the Bank and my colleagues, we would like to reassure you and your Government of our support to the health sector. This is in line with the national development plan, where we know under your leadership strong commitment has been put towards achieving Human Capital Development of the country. Thank you very much,” he concluded.

In his statement, President Dr Julius Maada Bio said the grant would be used to finance a hub-and-spoke services delivery model that allows for the identification of hubs in each district cluster and then distribute and improve quality essential health services at each of those satellite stations.

“The following district facilities will be upgraded as hubs: For Bonthe District: (United Brethren in Christ (UBC) Hospital, CHC Moriba Town, CHC Tihun). For Kailahun District: (CHC Bandajuma Yawei, CHC Buedu, Jojoima-CHC). For Falaba District: (CHC Kurubonla, CHC Falaba, CHC Mongo). For Tonkolili District: (CHC Hinistas, CHC Masingbi, CHC Bendugu). For the Western Area Rural (Waterloo, CHC Goderich).

“We intend to achieve a number of goals with this project. First, we want to ensure that skilled health personnel are available in target districts. Secondly, pregnant women should attend ante-natal clinic at least four times and all deliveries are attended by skilled health personnel. Next, we want to ensure that children are fully immunized. Finally, all mothers and children should receive basic nutrition services in health facilities,” he said.
